Elephants are natural performers...how sad that Ringling Brothers couldn't just let them perform without torturing them into submission.

It's so odd how people can be. After hearing about this decision, a lot of my railfan buddies started a petition to, as they put it, save the elephants, in this case, meaning to petition the circus to keep them in the circus. They all mentioned how the "PC police won again." Some say they won't go to another circus. But what they really mean is they don't want the circus train to go away. (Which it won't.) In the articles I read, the man who owns the circus noted how it has been changing for years. They no longer have the bearded lady, for example. I suspect those who made the decision know what they are doing. When I worked in TV news, any time the circus came to town, I would be asked to shoot the elephant walk and the PETA protest. Every year.

If you ever see the circus train pass, the elephants and other animals are always at the front of the train

I am so glad that they made this decision to take these beautiful animals out of the circus.

so that will now leave a bunch of elephants unemployed, with only a few usable skills. they will have to perform on street corners and work for peanuts.

Abused but at least they are not out in the jungle where they are being killed for their tusks, Elephants are on the endangered list along with a host of other animals that are destined for extinction, The zoo and circus are probably the only place where they will be able to coexist!...thanks to mankind!

I suspect some of them could become painters.

On the Southern end of Africa, one of the early researchers in Elephantology if there is such a word, got some ideas together
on how to bring the elephants back. Simply, if there is plenty of water at each watering hole and plenty of food between
watering holes the elephants have babies.

Currently in the Southern portion of Africa there has been an explosion in the number of elephants. Numbers are way up.

Oh and Mike they are unemployed. Good for them.

Oh How I feel sorry for the youth of today..

Bit by bit being deprived of the Pageantry, Excitement, Awe and a little bit of Fear, provided by the GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH.

After 70 years, the Sights,Sounds,Smells,Tastes and even the Touch are, still as pungent in my being, today as that Day I was taken to Madison Square Garden.

I saw on the news that they are phasing out the tigers and other animals too, thankfully. They will just keep the horses they have in the riding acrobatics shows. They will have to find animal sanctuaries now for all these animals. They should start one themselves, I think!

In the time of Cirque du Soleil, animal acts just are not as exotic anymore. Trampoline jumping set to dramatic music is more in vogue.

100 years ago seeing an elephant was a once in a life time experience. Takes more to get people off the couch these days.

Plus its cheaper to house, transport and feed human performers. At the end of the season you don't have to take care of them, when the contract ends so does the expense.

When I was maybe 8, I went to see the circus. My brother, who was 15 at the time, wanted to wander around (where he wasn't supposed to go) and he took me. I saw two elephants, with ankle bracelets on in a small tent. I asked him if they ever got to run and he said "probably not. They go from here to the next place, that's their life". And I cried and cried. Much to my brother's chagrin, we had to leave early because I wouldn't stop bawling.

It stopped being pageantry for me that day, and I never went to another circus featuring animals again. I have mixed feelings about animals performing for our entertainment. I know in some cases they can't go back to the wild and in some cases they are most likely genuinely loved and well cared for. As I said, mixed feelings. But to me, this thread is good news. :)

Ringling Bros. Circus vs. SeaWorld: One Will Survive, The Other Will Not

I live in Orlando, Rick and that is the very first thing I thought when I saw the elephant news. How are Ringling's animals any different really than Sea World's? Because Sea World spends more time and dollars promoting conservation, education and rescue.
