Prime Lens

So Im in the market for a prime lens for a canon 5D full frame, what are your suggestions and why? Looking at a 40mm and a 50 mm. I like both for the wide apeture for night shots and portraits.

I own this 85 and I can tell you I love it! I use a 5d Mark II.

It is fast, sharp and the cheapest lens I own. Read the reviews to see what other people think.

50 is "normal"...I've got one of those for my fx Nikon and love it, also have the 24 and that is a nice pair but 40 mm is not wide enough for a good wide angle look IMHO.

I use the 24-85 and love it but just isnt enough for night shots thats why I was thinking 40mm 2.8, but the 50 is a 1.8 so think it would be better for my startrails and landscapes

William,

Why prime? The only "prime" lens I own, is a 100mm Macro. Star trails, 24mm, at least. I had years ago, a really nice Tamron 24mm when I owned Nikon stuff.

Can't go wrong with a 50mm - it can do it all, cheap and sharp as a tack.
