What Are Collections?

Sorry if this is a dumb question...but what is a Collection? Are they organizations or companies that pay to be advertised on FAA? Are they collections made by FAA of of different subjects? Can an ordinary photographer be featured in any of the collections other than Staff Picks? Sorry if this has been asked before and I missed the post. Thanks for any info.
