Nikon's New Point And Shoot

I found this article very interesting: http://www.wired.com/2015/03/nikons-new-point-shoot-absurdly-long-zoom-range/

Here is the first paragraph of the article:

IF YOU WANT a camera lens with a zoom range of 24mm to 2,000mm, you won’t find it in a DSLR. In order to get that kind of preposterous wide-angle to telephoto reach in one package, you’ll have to opt for Nikon’s new Coolpix P900 fixed-lens ultrazoom.

i can imagine the lens sticking out like 6ft to get that range... i wonder what the quality of everything looks like. and really if anyone can actually hold a camera still like that. i would imagine trying to center it would be hard. i have a 30x and finding where the thing is in the center - near impossible. every movement is magnified.

i wonder if this will trickle down to smaller cameras.

Much too small sensor for this size (and price) of a camera

that thing is as big as my current slr. i would like to see the stable part trickle to other lenses or to compete with.

Do people still use teleconverters? Two 2x on a 500 mm will give the same reach. But basically it comes down to what you might want to do with it. I imagine a lot of back porch bird photographers would be keenest

I don't think it's something I would go for, but it might be a nice one for my husband as he is a totally inexperienced photographer and needs simple/basic/look and push a button kind of things. He has no patience for what I deal with in cameras/lenses/etc. LOL

Dangit JC you took the words out of my mouth.

I cringe every time someone touts the iq of a 24-300 MM Lens for a DSLR, let alone this.

That's pretty nuts yeah. I'm sure it will find a market, but you can pick up a good DSLR with good lenses used for that price if you know where you're looking.

I would be concerned about the quality of the image at 100%
I'd like to "borrow" one for a month or so though.

Sony has one that I considered strongly,,It has a 24/200 zoom and is a P&S, It has the carl zeiss lens and a lot of features that make it very attrarctive, I ended up getting the a6000 though,

If you are considering it I would look at the sony,,they pioneered the concept and excel in the small to mid range cameras,

I kind of want one. I just purchase a Sony a6000 so I am learning about it right now. I will check out the Sony though. I think this is a great discussion and its important to watch the evolution of cameras.

It will be interesting to see how this takes off. Given that most people seem to obsess with new equipment and genuinely believe that new = always better and therefore must make them a better photographer I am sure Nikon are onto a winner, at least for a short while until someone else comes up with a 3000mm zoom... the race is on.

I had a 590nm Infrared Canon G11 with 1/1.7" sensor... the sensor was way too small with way too much noise even at 80 ISO. I'm sure it was the infrared contributing to the noise, etc. I never too many regular photographs with the G11 before the conversion, so I can't really comment on that.

The sensor in this Nikon P900 is even smaller than some of the other point and shoots. I'm much happier with the Nikon Coolpix A that I just got converted to infrared. Of course it doesn't have a 3000mm zoom and only a wider angle prime, but hey that DSLR DX sized sensor is nice to have in a point and shoot.
