March, The Month Of Green?

Well here we are, it's March already. This month we have St Patrick's Day, the first day of Spring and flowers should be popping up. I was looking for a shamrock to post as this months logo but didn't have one, sooooo I'm using my "Green Pineapple" as a substitute. If any of you have paintings or photos of Leprechauns, shamrocks, flowers or what ever you think of that relates to Spring, please share.

I will be in and out of this discussion thread the next two weeks, mostly out, while I'm in California. I hope you all have a great start to your month.

Morning all,

Snow n' sleet last night here in coastal down east Maine,.....as beautiful as everything is you cannot move around in it to access photographic vantage points #@*&8#$
Without snow shoes of some kind it is actually quite dangerous to attempt venturing out onto the 3 to 4 feet depth of whiteness without sinking up to your thighs,...then if not stuck, you will actually find yourself bogged in, The effort to move about would exhaust you rather quickly and depending on your physical condition could result in being stranded within plain sight of the street.
Soooooooooo,..........winter lingers on,...no matter what the calendar says,....Ain't no Spring..ing ahead in this white quicksand,....no physically anyway. Not complaining mind you,.....
Tooooo bad,...lots of full moon oportunities this coming week too,...will hopefully look for some safe vantage poimts as the weeks evenings present themelves.
My nose tip got frost bit last time out a week ago,...the skin crusted and peeled off,....2nd time that has happened to me. Nothing of concern,...just intrestin how dangerous it can be very close to safe locations.,...gotta pay attention and not be fooooolish,.....me foolish,..naaaaaaaa not me.

Pat your becoming an Ausie,...sounds like ol mate,....or is it mat'ess??????? Are both male and females refered to as "mates" or is there gender bias on even local Ausie slang and terminology?
Cannot blame you for getting caught up in the place though,...its not like you will be returning there every once in awhile,...or is it???
I see you are enjoying,...hope the foods are all scrumptious,....any intresting unusual foods or menu items you never have seen before that you can share about with us??
Anyway,....Chipp chip ol' chap and all the stuff mate'.

Hey Deb,.....that artist's link you posted,....wow doesn't her work remind me of some of your beautiful work,.......very talented and seemingly popular too from the looks of her websites.
The time involved in creating a large quantity of paintings,...i mean it's not even close to what's involved with a camera.
That's where,...for me anyway,....the term Artist,...really applies to a talented and creative individual.
I never took to the term "artist" for a photographer,....myself anyway,.....I'm just a photographer,....What's wrong with that?

Many terminologies used frequently to identify creative's today,....were not even coined yet when I began learning photography,....old salt that I am,.........especially the word for soft focus on a camera lens "Bokey",.....you cannot talk photo jargon today without hearing that word,....Didn't exist ,....not even,.....when I started out. Was just called "soft focus" at wide open aperatures,...alway was that,...today you gotta have a lens with Excellent Bokey,...pronounced Boquet,.....I guess..fancy shmancee,....so it sounds Frenh or exotic or something.
It's even amazing how whole $$$$ markets crop up around ego identities in photography,....there,...I feel better now,....my rant for today,...

Darice enjoy California,.......wear all your Hawaiin gear and flowery outfits,......let those Californians know there are warmer and more exotic places that Lagoona Beach , Big Sur. and Malabu.

With that I'll sign off,....gotta go outside and do my fitness thingy,....throw a lil snow here,...a lil there,...Hey,...Paul,...our snow plow guy,...just arrived to do our drive way,....aint no place for him to put it,..nowhere...I now have more shoveling opportunities ,....digging out,....after he piles up all the white stuff,...in my way of course .

Hi Jim,....hope you and your wife are up and about feeling better.

Pat,
My cousin lives in Queensland Australia along Cloud Bank, Redcliffe, Moreton bay area.
Glad you're enjoying your trip.

Hi Marty:)
Women in Australia are called "sheila".
I'm in northern California, Chico. Were having early summer like conditions.
Highs near 80:) It's nothing new out here, our winter always cut short.
During Easter we will be melting from the heat.
Darice, if visiting Chico area will feel comfortable. But Tahoe mighty cold.

Hello Jim, I'm sorry to learn you and your wife are sick.
Speedy recovery:)

Morning mates and Maties! Interesting question Marty about plural of word???? I will try to find out. Yes I love it here but it is probably a lot because of the huge contrast with our horrid up to your armpits in snow winter. Yup you got that right Debbie folks in California are used to lovely weather but some of us not so much. Mind you I would miss seasons so and also when we get away it is so spectacular we are in heaven.
Sorry. You are still sick James that sucks
Off for another day in paradise. I will be back in the. Snowy frozen north soon enough. Make hay while the sun shines is my motto!!!!

Well Pat, you're an Aussie for the moment.
Women are known as a sheila.
G'day mate,
you little bewdy,
no~bull, (I favor this slang the best)...
hoo~roo,
fair dinkum,
'ow yer goin?
chock a block and so on...

Hi Pat, So glad you are enjoying your Aussie break. Im glad our weather changes aren't so drastic, I really don't like cold and really don't like snow. Summer is gone here but compared to the US its still warm I guess.
Reading your post Debbie makes me feel like a bit of a yobbo, but most of the slang is spot on, only sheila isnt too commonly used. You get used to your own slang but I do actually say fair dinkum a lot and everyone is your mate over here. We are a friendly mob.
Breazie and cooler here on the South Coast of New South Wales, only 28 degrees C today, but still shorts weather.
Have a nice day everyone cheers.

throughout Australia.
Nice to meet you Merrin, enjoy your day:)

Marty,

Thank you for bringing up "bokeh". I have been having "tease the elitist" fits about it for several months, as I had just learned it. I always thought it was "soft focus" as well. So now, when my photographer husband and I take portraits or photos that result in background soft focus, we exclaim.."Ooh, look at that bokeh!" with a ton of irony

It sounds like Maine is still snowbound. My brother in law, in Mid-Maine, is just now getting his sap buckets out and running. He has had to bucket some of the deep snow out of his maple stand access trails. Warmer thaw on the way and then----mud season!

Best regards and thanks for the update.

Glad you enjoyed your stay Pat. You didn't miss anything with the Big Banana (overrated). Next time you visit you should go south. Country side and beaches are prettier and not as crowded. I have put in a friend request on fb. I see you have a shepherd. I have two beautiful shepherds. One old girl 14yrs, she's my husbands and a two yr old which is mine as my beautiful companion of 13 years past away 3 years ago.i bet yours will be so glad to see you home. Happy Friday to all. The warm weather has been truly lifegiving here the past week. If we can squeeze one more weekend from it, I will be very happy. Scott and I are hoping to get down to the Yellowstone this weekend to photograph some of the ice break up and season changes. There are two jams right now about 80 miles apart. The winter has been open in this part of Montana, unlike the east, so a lot of the river is open and birds are migrating. My best to all with wishes for adventures of a good kind.

I am home. I got your fb request Merrin and we are now officially friends. Today or was it yesterday I left Australia. OMG what a flight - 20+ hours. Almost 14 from Sydney to Vancouver. We arrived at Vancouver ( a huge airport) at 8:05 a.m. deplaned at 8:20 (we were in row 58 so the back of the bus so to speak). Then raced literally to catch our 9:00 a.m. connecting flight to Ottawa. Had to go through customs, collect baggage, find domestic gate and go through security and we did it in 1/2 hour. Yikes --- guy after customs asked us if we could run, said yes and we did. Last 4 people through gate that was then closed. OMG the amazing race we won. Home again.
I watched 5 full length feature movies on trip home.
We found the beaches lovely and not crowded in any way. Glorious country. Home to melting snow, but melting is good.
See darice is still in CA, good on her.
Hiya everyone.

What did I do mama???????????
I leave the house for a couple of hours and Phyllis goes bonkers when I get back,.....I do not think dogs understand the concept of time.
They live in the moment,....and that's it.
We should learn from them.

That's a lot of time flying Pat,.....half way around the world and back,...neat that you could do it, life is good, much to be thankful for.

Looking forward to seeing a few pics when you post them.

Bring back anything intrestin for souveners,...baby kangaroos,...or anything :-))

So glad it was a wonderful vacation,......nothing worse than traveling somewhere to find out you don't like it.

It's 11;30 PM and I just came in from from photographing down at the lighthouse for several hours in a raging snow fall here,...neatso keen and fantabulious,....I love being out in wild weather,...especially snow.
Everything is soooooo soooo quiet and muffled,....you can almost hear the snow touching the ground.
I'm still like a lil kid when I'm out there.
Will select a best one and post it torromow,....tried some new ideas for a wild snowflake effect,....hope it worked out,...love experementing,...will never grow up,...why should I,....i'M RETIRED,....SORT OF ANYWAY.

Hi everyone, this is our last day in California. We had a fantastic time with both Charlies family in the Bay Area and mine up in Loyalton. My daughter from Florida showed up as a great big surprise! It was so good to see her! I got to see 5 out of the 6 grand kids and 3 of my 4 kids, my parents, two of my sisters and a niece. So much fun! We met Charlie' new baby grand daughter, 5 weeks old, sooooooo cute! Had a great time with his mom, brother and sister, lots of cousins and a lot of friends. His mom's 90th party was a great success. 138 people showed up....fun, fun, fun!!!

Welcome home Pat. I sure enjoyed all the photos you've been sharing on facebook.

I'll check back in tomorrow or Monday. Have a good night everyone.

Wow Darice,....thats not a family,...thats a community,....your family must have it's own zip code.

California must have had a lot of frequent and long extended blackouts when yo guys were younger,....

I think that is amazing how you all get together as you do,.....must be wonderful family Darice,....no wonder your so good with people,...doing soooo many things,....accomplishing soooo much,....teaching,....you grew up that way,....everyone helping and sharing and doing.

Just curious Darice,.....does creativity run in the family,..artisticly inclined as you are,....
If I remember correctly,...your parents,..or mother has or had an artist studio or shop too,...is that right?
Apple does not fall far from the tree????

I'm surprised everyone,...remembers,..everyone.

You see,...I'm one of a kind,....my wife too,....No brothers,...no sisters,.....I'm a onesies kind of guy.
I had one of each kind with my second wife,....they are both still single,...so no grand kids,....not that marriage is a determining factor these days.
By the time my two have any kids,....I will be a real old grand dad,....if I still even,....am.

I came into this world with nothing,...and still have most of it,.....yup.

I feel like an orphan next to your clan Darice.,...
all I can think about is the line from the movie "On The waterfront",....
Marlon Brando said,...."I Coulda Been a Contender"

My strange mind at work,.....never mind.

138 people at a get together,..and it wasn't even everyone,...huh,....geeeeeeze,....and I thought my parents Italian families were large....NOT.

Puts me into perspective,.....I'm just a single grain of sand,..lying put,...on a big flat surface somewhere.....echo,...echo,....echo.

Morning all.
Wow quite the clan Darice. Sounds amazing and so much fun. I am more in Marty's club, small family, no kin hardly. Part of moving back east was to reconnect with few cousin's etc. I have. My brother (the one in Australia) lives near Montreal. Cousins and nieces and such in Ottawa. Why I am here. Friends mostly come and go through out your life but family are always family.
My head is foggy today, the jet lag thing. Why I am traveling now as travel is hard and maybe in the future I will not be able to do these big mega trips. Slow day.
Have not done any art for 2 weeks, just a tourist.
Nice to be home.

My grandparents gone long ago.
All my cousins left Chico and move to different places.
One to queensland australia. Some are in germany.
Haven't seen relatives in many years.

Glad you had a nice trip Pat.
Glad your visit was a good one Darice.

I have a question, I'll be selling greeting cards
to a few local stores in Chico.
Having the cards made up, on the backside of the card I'm ask
to add my contact information and something I don't often hear...
"what is the story?"

My paintings don't have a story. I simply try to create something
in hope that will catch one's attention.

Sunny out today, no mustard BUT frekkin cold! When I was away and so hot I vowed not to complain about cold so I am trying to temper my reactions to lack of certain climate conditions!!!
Tonight dinner party - carrot soup, beef stroganoff and lemon chiffon pie - I make the best lemon chiffon pie - old family recipe that is light, not too sweet and lemony! Yum! I don't cook that much but have a few favourite recipes.

Morning and happy Saturday to everyone.

Hey Pat,....When Deb's package arrives,.....photograph it,....n' keep it around for a rainy day,....that's what I did.

Darice,....it's not a real tree,...would look pretty humble it it were,....it's an ornate brass one with curvy tree shaped brinchie things that tree decoratiations hang off of.
The only thing artificial about it now,....is that it ain't Christmas.
PS..... It's still standing,...haven't gotten to it yet.
It's right next to the kitchen table,...so we are still deriving much pleasure from it every day,....a handy reminder how proficient we are at dealing with important things that come up daily.

Yaaa Deb, we got a few little webs dangling off that tree,...spiders gotta celebrate Christmas too.

Darice,.....Thanks for that info about the Chinese symbols,....it's a wonderful finishing touch to the snake painting that just makes it perfect.

I did a quick Chinese symbol check on google for Feb 8th, 1944,....I think I'm a Goat or a Sheep,......Baaa Baaa...I'll stick with being an Aquarius thank you.

I went to your Tasting Hawaii sit Jim,....been awhile since I last visited it,...sooo much information and recipes galore. I have to make up a list, get out and get some ingredients and try out several of those for myself,...if I can find them.

Question Jim,....Each one of those recipes??? you have cooked each and every one shown,...right???
Do they reflect your personal touch as far as ingredients and cooking method are concerned??.....to suit your liking,......or are they as typically prepared in the kitchens of various nationalities without alteration?.
And the photography accompanying each recipe,...is the finishing touch,...makes you want to eat it right now.
I imagine,.. those photos were taken by you as you completed (and before you devoured) each recipe. Great job (on the images) as well as being a Great Job as related to being a chief.
Your spice rack and ingredient stockpile must be really something.
I like the way you explain a little about the ingredients so it familiarizes you with it for future uses,....the Cooking with Rice Flour article spicificaly,....I've been tempted to try several types when at the organic market,...but have had no idea how to substitute them for traditional flours that are not the best ones to consume.
I want to make a nice crispy fried chicken and you've given me some ideas,...thanks.

Well it's about time I start my day,......

Enjoy the weekend all

Wow, this month is almost over. Thanks for the comments on my website makeover.

Marty, I haven't had much luck with fried chicken with just rice flour. I have one recipe on my blog for "Italian Fried Chicken" that has a tomato sauce. Also here is a recipe I found from Food & Wine Magazine that sounds like it might work, but it uses a combination of wheat and rice flour. http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/extra-crispy-fried-chicken

As far as my spice cabinet goes, I always have to stand back when I open it for fear of a spice can avalanche. I am constantly trying new spices. As far as recipes go, I usually think of some food or recipe that is a little different that folks haven't tried that fits in with Hawaiian or Asian cuisine, then I research hundreds of recipes either in my cookbooks or online, and pick one that sounds good based on my own taste, then I try it and then change ingredients, again based on my own taste. I expect that most cooks do the same thing. After years of testing recipes you learn what works and what doesn't. And then their is the photography. I try and think of what the dish will look like before it's cooked so I can stage a shot. Some work and others just lay there. The one thing that's necessary is that you have to work very quickly because food dies right in front of you. Then there is the lighting. I usually like to use natural light, usually early in the morning, but sometime I use flash for oven or stovetop shots. Like any art, it's not easy but I enjoy the process, and it's always worth the effort when a shot and recipe come out the way you hoped it would.

James, like Marty, it's been a long time since I visited your website. Everything looks so yummy it made my tummy growl....it must be lunch time. I shared your website on both twitter and facebook. I hope it'll give you a little boost.

I'm working on a big painting right now that takes up a lot of room in my studio. When I have meetings or students I have to move it out into the hall. I managed to get the sky in yesterday and hope to get the back ground mountains in today. It's a commission painting of Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe for my customer in Florida. She is in no hurry to get it but I'm in a hurry to get it out of the way.....LOL So I'm off to paint. i hope you all have a great weekend!

James,
Manny's chicken is very tasty:)
He removes the skin or select the chicken without skin and no salt/sodium.
He fries it in the frying pan with water, flour, lemongrass, garlic, and lots
of sodium free seasonings.
The chicken comes out moist, falls apart with a fork and the gravy it
produces we serve over long grain rice with steamed veggies.
I like it:)

Hi everyone, its Sunday afternoon here and quite hot.
James I checked out your website, it is awsome! So professional and the food looks great, you have certainly put a lot of time and effort into it.
Darice I will check stores here to see if your book is on sale.
It has been lovely chatting with you on facebook Pat and your Anna is certainly a beautiful girl.
Im still struggling to get the time to get back to my rainforest painting, did a bit Friday afternoon, I dont know about anyone else but I get impatient and want to finish a painting once I have started.
What is your big painting of Darice?
Im glad you still have your passion for cooking James, my husband Colin lost his. When we married he said he would never retire, he loved the clang of the pans and everything about chefing, we almost had our own restaurant at one stage and the owners of the property did the wrong thing by us and Col never got over it. I do all the cooking at home.
Debbie I love the way you continually change your profice picture they are so happy and colourful.
Well hoping you all enjoy the rest of your weekend :-)

Good afternoon, evening Merrin:)
One thing about changing your profile photo to often, (like I do)...
The image doesn't get into the FAA/Pixels databanks so people
can locate you. I get bored with the same image and change it often.
Your new rainforest painting, sounds pretty looking forward to seeing it.

Darice whips out paintings fast, no matter what size it may be.
I remember long ago, My husband Manny and I went to Tahoe
where Darice was manning her parents gallery.
Darice was working on a large painting of mountain, flowers,
a beautiful BIG painting. While that was drying she had 4 other paintings
waiting their turn for completion.
She's a little short dynamite always on go lol:)

Everyone have a great Sunday:)

LOL, Debbie! I love that discription "short dynamite always on the go"! I may have to use that in my next artist statement or bio. I also love the nick name "Island girl" you gave me.

Merrin, I'm doing a 3 foot x 5 foot painting of "Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe" for a client. I'm very happy with my progress at the moment. I had lots of uninterrupted time yesterday to work on it. I have work in progress pictures on facebook. You can find both my personal FB and my business page by putting in my full name as you see it here under my avatar. Merrin, sad about your husband Colin loosing his passion for cooking. I hold on to mine like an expensive glass of bourbon.

Debbie, Manny's chicken sounds great. The tough part about cooking without salt is finding a way to get flavor into the dish, like lemon juice, or spices.

Today I visited one of the thousands of artists here on FAA. Leon Zemitsky is formally from Russia and now lives in Canada. I love this mans work, here is an example:

His work is very colorful, graphic, right up my alley, check it out.

Jim,....that seems like an unusual recipe if I'm reading it correctly?
Twice cooked chicken???? So long a cooking time seems to me. 2-1/2 hours the first time,...even at 200 degrees sounds over cooked to me
Over cooked chicken takes on a fish like texture in my experiences and lacks moistness and flavor.
Have you tried the recipe Jim?
I usually cook chicken in the oven at a higher temp for a shorter period,....always tender,...maybe I'm missing something.
Probably why I'm not a chief ;-((
Sometimes I'll cut chicken off the bone while it's par-frozen,...then make a nice stir fry w/ veggies n' spices from that,..mmmmmmm.
Red wine also a great additive to stir fry,...and anything resembling an Italian vinigar salad dressing mixture to an oven made or bar B qued yard bird,...(chicken)...mmmmmmm good.
Hunger games here with all this food talk,....
Might try Manny's recipe too Deb,....yum yum.
Gettin hungry..........

I look at a recipe,....and also tweak it to my perceived liking and variation as far as ingredients go too,...the way my tastes say I think it ought to be done. If I like the sound of everything I'll go with it though. Thanks for your input Jim.

Darice, you must paint like my wife Helen types,.....fast. It's nice when your hands and mind,..just know what, how and when to create the painting intuitively. Perfect makes practice overn time.
Hope you'll post that BIG painting for us to all enjoy.

It's 3;35 AM,.....gotta get my zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's now.

I probably still have a little southern accent Debbie. I grew up in the south and didn't move until college.

Marty, those 2 chickens in the Food & Wine Magazine are cooked at an extremely low temperature of 200 degrees. then fried in a batter. I have not tried this recipe, but it got 5 stars in a magazine that has been around for a long time. It was only a suggestion, do what you feel is to your taste.

Today is corn day. The lions club is selling fresh ears of corn. We usually buy 4 dozen ears and take the corn off the cobs, then briefly blanch it. Then we freeze it for future use.

Aloha Paul from Japan. Welcome to our group. It's great to have someone from your neck of the woods join us. This is truly an international group. I had a peek at your work. Love it! The energy in your seascape paintings are fantastic. I also like your simple color palette. I hope you come back often to chat with us. I personally would love to know how life is in Japan.

Merrin, keep those photos coming. I like showing off the talents of this diverse group.

I noticed the accent too, Debbie. I sometimes imagine hearing it as I read through the posts.

Enjoy your walk Pat.

James, I'll go checkout Leon's work after I finish this post. I know I'm going to like it just from seeing the one you shared.

Marty, I do paint fast. That is, I do when I have the time to focus without interruption. Are things warming up there yet? How are the piles of mustard going?

Thank you Jim for taking the time to locate that recipe, I have copied and pasted it into my to do food list.
I'm not going to grow if I don't try different techniques,...especially when their tried and true.
I've had a few impressive failures from not cooking slowly when I should have,...lamb shanks and ribs being two that come to mind.
Motto; Don't cook when you are hungry.

Hi Paul, nice meeting you here, look forward to hearing about Japan. How long have you been there?
Your ocean paintings are done nicely, really liked the crashing Waves one especially.

My past and still accent,...." paak the caa in Haavad yaad",....goin hoss back riding,..yaaaaa a Boston remnant often kidded about.
While in the military and stationed in the Carolinas,...I got self conscious, lost it for awhile and began enunciating all my Rs.and saying you'all.
I doubt though that any of that comes thru here.

Looked through your portfolio Merrin, very nice work,..photographs as well as your paintings,....liked your people paintings, Scarlett Johansson nice,...relic double decker bus , tree scenes and the suspended rope bridge all wonderful work.

Hi Pat,...Hi Deb

To answer your question Darice,.....The piles of mustard are almost down to the previous third mustard layer that was deposited in February,....

Last week Helen and I were working in the office,...and we heard a loud crunching and ripping sound from the rear of our house,....Our beautiful large attached outdoor patio deck,....which had a 12 foot high mounded pile of mustard on it,... that was shoveled off our roof,...(so the roof wouldn't collapse)....well,...it crushed, collapsed and crushed the deck,....ripped it right off the house entirely,...I guess we laid on the damn condiments .....tooooooo thick and heavy ......#!*&#@!
Time to see,...how far behind us the insurance company,...is or isn't going to stand??????? Better be pretty close,we hopes???

With that I will sign off for now,

TTFN
Marty

That's looking great Darice, love the sky and the reflections, can't wait to see the finished product.
I guess we do have accents, Debbie, only I don't write how I talk. I'm much more formal, as we all are I suppose. I hadn't noticed but will take more notice to see if I can pick it.
Nearly finished my painting, I have to stop myself from putting too much detail in and make it too busy.
Uploaded my mangrove pics, I'm not a photographer so they are pretty basic but interesting.
Hot again today, but cooler of a night. Feeling quite exhausted on, Wednesdays I support a young lady in her early 30s who has autism. Hard to entertain for 5 hrs straight. Came home and did a little painting to clear my head.
Hoping everyone is having a good week.
Have a great Easter everyone. Cheers

morning ya'll (Canadian for you all) hahaha!
I love the Boston twang! I really enjoyed the Aussie accent too! They say folks (me) from the Ottawa valley have an accent but.....
Spring has sprung here - mustard is disappearing from the lettuce.
Merrin I like your Mangrove swamp photos - I recently did a small watercolour of a ghost tree (from S. California) The photo of your tree in the swamp reminded me of my painting.
Had a great day yesterday - shopped til I dropped with a new friend in the big city of Kingston Ontario - we hit every thrift store in town and loaded her car. Fun!!! and very inexpensive. There is really no shopping where I live so enjoy getting into it every once in a while. I got a bag of balls for Anna Banana for $1.99. I bet there are 30 balls in the bag - she was delighted!

Merrin,
You may think you're accent chatter within this group
isn't noticeable, oh but it is:)
Nothing wrong with it, I admire accents.

Pat,
I have friends in Texas, their accents are thick
with ya'll lol:)

Were skipping Easter, no family.
We will pot flowers in our garden and patio, that'll be busy enough.
Have a great day, evening.
