Miracles Do Happen

I'm so happy this weekend I can barely contain myself! We've had two incidents of dogs running off where I live. One was a sled dog that took off from his new owners five months ago...unfortunately he even had a leash attached to him. Then 16 days ago, three labs ran off while their owners were vacationing. The first lab was found miles from home the day after, I believe. The next lab was found, also many miles from home, on day 5. That's when I heard about it and I got kind of obsessed looking for the last dog, a young black lab. She was finally found the day before yesterday, 16 days after she went missing, up on a logging road where I'd been hiking.

And unbelievably, the sled dog that has been missing for five months was just found yesterday, many, many miles from home. How these dogs survived is beyond me.

So if you ever have a dog go missing, don't give up hope. You just never know.

That is very good news Peggy. Some happy owners & their pups out there tonight.
So good of you to assist in the search. I bet you sleep well at nights.

The black lab in particular really got under my skin, Janine. I had a dream that I found her and after that I was determined that she'd be found but meanwhile I could barely sleep. It was weird. Our whole community up and down the coast got involved with the searches and Facebook updates were coming in fast and furious...it was very heart-warming. There are acres and acres of forests around here with power lines and logging roads...lots of places where dogs could get lost.

There was a similar thing that happened in Wilmington, OH. Their police dog, Karson, escaped from his caretakers while his handler/trainer was out of town. He got away before Christmas and was on his own in the cold winter weather for 61 days. Everyone in the community and surrounding areas was looking for him. He finally was found in a field just last week. His trainer was very happy and relieved to have him back. The vet reports that despite his losing fourteen pounds he is in good health. They held a welcome home party for him last weekend.

What a cool story, Phyllis. The vet is checking out the dog here today so I hope he's o.k. Somebody posted a picture of him where he was found, sitting on a log boom at a fish farm up an inlet. That very spot happened to be at the epicenter of an earthquake we had on Valentine's Day. He looks pretty good considering. Luckily we've had a very mild winter this year.

What a great story Peggy...Phyllis too! Amazing how they can survive on their own for so long.

It sure is, Val. I think I know how they do it too...it's a regular buffet table of elk and deer droppings around here. I always have to keep my own dogs from snacking between meals. :-) Hope I didn't gross anyone out!

Good news! Have you ever seen the movie Eight Below? Its based of a true story about 8 sled dogs trapped in Antarctica during the winter for 5 or 6 months. Touching story.

No, I haven't seen that movie, Jennifer. Sounds good. Apparently this dog had a very rough life before he was adopted. He's a survivor, that's for sure. But his owners better hang onto him...he might have an even wilder streak in him now.
