Covered Bridges

I just saw a very nice digital work by artist Chris Flees. I was reminded of covered bridge paintings I did back in 1991. I'll bet there are a bunch more great works out there, much better than my dabbling. If so, show us your bridges.

Mine are of the Speakman's bridge in eastern PA, but I grew up close to the Bridges of Madison County made famous by Clint Eastwood.

There is exactly one covered bridge in South Carolina. I've shot it, but it's not ready for FAA. I bet someone in these forums will post their shot of it though.

Yes, Joe Hinson, you guessed right!

This is SC's only covered bridge left. (It gives the impression it's leaning, it really looks that way, but it isn't - It's straight.

I would think there would be a lot more covered bridges on FAA. Did anyone see the movie or read Robert Waller's book?

Yep, I have a Gallery dedicated to the Covered bridges of New England. I'm just not a regular participant in message boards.

This is one I have licensed/contracted for sale as a Jigsaw puzzle, which I also sell as FineArt prints. To date we've sold well over 100,000 copies in about 16 months. I've just signed (2) more contracts for additional Covered bridges which is where they want to pause for now. Anyhow, here is the artwork design for the packaging.

Here is the artwork print, without the packaging artwork.. You can see the manufacturer made a minor crop off the lower 1/8th of the print. BTW, to avoid ANY confusion the puzzles are NOT a product of FAA or distributed by FAA. These are exclusive contract(s) I have with the corporation.

Yes Colin I have seen them and they are wonderful. I have been on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy. Here in America the covered bridges are honored as a part of American, a nod to our bucolic past of horse and buggy and rural life.

In regards to the " horse & buggy days ", it has been said that the barn-like appearance of the covered bridges helped to encourage horses to enter. The roof and sides were originally intended to simply protect the structural beams from exposure to weather. People also found it to be a nice shelter from sudden rainfalls and young couples found it to be a convenient place to " steal a kiss or two " while going for a buggy ride in the countryside.

Kevin Callahan

How fun is that?

BTW this discussion prompted me to check Missouri, there are only 5 bridges left in the state. Sadly none are close to where I live. Ah well.

I'm only familiar with the New England covered bridges. I always thought they were covered to keep the snow & ice from piling up on them. When we were kids we used to make a wish & hold our breath when we drove across - if you held your breath the whole way, your wish supposedly came true. Mom and dad would slow the car waaaay down...
Beautiful pics, everyone, btw.

Whites Bridge (alternatively White's Bridge) was a 120-foot (37 m) span Brown truss covered bridge, erected in 1869 in Keene Township, Michigan, United States, near Smyrna on the Flat River. On July 7th, 2013, the bridge burned down. Police suspect it was an arson. I took this the previous fall.
