Am I On The Right Track?

Hi folks! I'm new to FAA, but have spent a ton of time researching POD and setting the foundation to open an online store. I have finally bit the bullet and opened a shop, which I intend to fill with the hundreds of photos in my husband's considerable collection of incredible images. Right now, there are only two pieces in the shop. Before I spend hundreds of hours adding more images (probably in collections focused on classic cars, colorful abstract art, and striking black and white street photos), I would REALLY appreciate it if you could look at the first two shots and my shop in general and let me know if there's anything major I'm missing to have a strong store. I realize it will take months, if not years, to get this off the ground, but I"m also anxious to learn from the experience that's already here, so I'd really appreciate your input!

Welcome to FAA! Hard to really tell much from just 2 shots...maybe add a few more for people to get a better feel. Just one observation off the bat...I'd crop out the person filling the car with gas. You have to think about what someone would want hanging on their wall...cute dog, cool car and patterns - yes! Gas hose, headless guy - no!

Welcome to FAA they look good to me.

Hi shutterfinger.

I like your style, a very urban theme which has its own challenges. Just keep posting a hell of a lot of your best photos and market them all physically and digitally. Results won't be instant so be patient. Look forward to seeing more of your work.

Sell Art Online
the description is kind of pitchy, because i can't imagine too many homes that would want to see a foreclosed building on their wall. in any case it will be hard to market.

Art Prints
while they are different, many of these images will be tough to market - you have to do the foot work, they probably won't come to you. there's a spelling error in the title. i don't know who gordon is, i think these all need better captions. forget the sales pitch, that never works (i've tried), it's better to make a story about what we are looking at.

Sell Art Online
snow bunny, i wonder if there is a summer version. the noise in the sky - even if added, will probably not print, and will probably be flagged if it sells. you have a lot of useless keywords like living room, contemporary, etc things people won't be looking for. its better to highlight what's in the image, like surfboards, is not listed, location, etc should be there along with your own name.

I just looked at what you have up there now (10 I think) and some are GREAT photos from the standpoint of subject and composition - I love offbeat street scenes and ironic 'sights'- but the ones I looked at closely are very small - too small for anything but the smallest prints. Are those scans, or from an older digital camera? If they're scans, you'll need to up the game.

I read that it's your husband that has taken the photos....May I ask , is he reading our comments at this time.

If so, I love your particular eye, and I believe you should stay doing what you are doing....And don't get tied up worrying about what others might feel as to the direction you should go to become marketable.....Keep having your own eye...You never know where that might lead.

I would make one request...I would like to know your name.

To me, a person should be confident enough in his own work, to stand by it with their own name connected with it.

WELCOME...Waiting to see more work

You are definitely well on your way to building up an interesting portfolio. Whether this would translate to sales though is another question. Remember, there is a difference between skillfully made, well-composed photos and stuff people want to hang on their walls.

All art is worth displaying. Share it with the world and perhaps fortune will come your way. You have nothing to lose.

Thanks SO so much for your incredibly helpful comments, everyone! Mike Savad - really appreciate the constructive comments on my descriptions. I'm going to look at more of other people's and find a better tone. This is exactly why I asked for input! I'm also going to be posting more of my husband's other styles of art - abstract images and cars, etc - and I think some of those will be more traditionally sellable. I hope! I do love his distinctive style, and I'm going to try to be true to that. But I'll try to find a balance between what people would want on the wall and what is so special about Gordon.

Roger - thanks for your kind words. I did read them to Gordon (Gordon Lewis). He's not at all reluctant to share his name. I have his name as the artist in each of the items that are posted. It's just that I'm the one who passionately wants his work to get out that and who had an interest in starting a store. So I started it. He's got a full time job (as a writer, ironically) and didn't have time to do this. But I didn't want to post things "as" Gordon, but I thought that would be disingenuous.

Again, thanks for the amazing input everyone! I am loving the FAA welcome. Cheers, Claudia (on behalf of Gordon).

Hi and welcome :)

Good stuff so far…not much to add to the good advice you've already recieved. I love "Texas Surfer's". Do you have anymore surfing related pics? If you do you should get them uploaded…it's a pretty popular subject. I have a surfing related photo that sells quite regularly. Just a head's up ;)

Welcome and good luck!

the main trick is, post things that you would put on your own walls. something you would buy, frame and hang. if you can't think of a spot, or a person you would personally give to as a gift, then it may not sell well, and may drag the rest of store down as well.

I never worry about if it will look good on a living room wall. The market for prints extends far beyond residential wall decor. I am rather certain few of my prints sold here are hanging in living rooms. Retro prints are used in restaurants, bars, insurance offices, waiting rooms and many other kinds of business settings. The market is huge. That said what you have posted seems to be more of an editorial nature. I would try and sell also as editorial stock or commercial stock as applies. Keep em coming and use the actual name of the photographer in the bio. It's important.

Personally I like what I am seeing. For me its very original and makes me think and laugh. I agree with Bradford, great potential for some of them selling as editorial stock or commercial.

I'm so glad some of you see what I see - I do think his work has something to offer. Some of the other images I'll be posting are also more marketable for home decor, so I'll be interested to see what you all think. More to come! Thanks!!
