A Rare Bird..

Caramel Eagle

Leucism is a genetic trait that inhibits the production of pigment. Unlike albino animals, leucistic animals exhibit some pigment, only lighter than their non-leucistic counterparts. This is a leucistic juvenile bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) seen at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in California. Scientists estimate that only one in 5,000-10,000 wild animals carry this trait.

My, weren't you "lucky" to get this shot! I know how much work can go into avian photography, and admire your work all the more for knowing that.

Thanks everyone. Gregory, you are of course, right about that! While I was lucky enough to see this bird, photographing her was a bit of a challenge. At the Sacramento NWR (and other refuges in this area), it is strictly forbidden to get out of your car while on the auto route. I drive a tiny little car, with a manual transmission, and naturally, this eagle was on the right hand side of the road and very high up on a snag. Maneuvering myself into position to shoot up and out the passenger side window was the material for a comedy sketch. I think I still have the stick shift impression on my *ahem* backside. Worth it for the shot, though. :)

P.S. I really have no idea if it's a him or a her, but I'm calling it "her" just because her appearance is so elegant and feminine.

Wow, she is beautiful! Lucky you for finding her! And I can sure relate to the small car, stick shift scenario as I have one of those too...though my son drives it more than me these days. :)
