How To Charge For Shipping And Handling If You Don't Know The Cost

So if someone wants to buy one of my artworks but must have it shipped how can I create an invoice that states the charge of shipping and handling without having to go to the store to have a price check? Keep in mind I am sure that the price would vary greatly from piece to piece.

don't know.

If you are shipping from your home you can go on the shippers website and enter in the dimensions and weight.

I explain on my website that shipping is not included in my pricing. Then I ask the buyer for their address, then contact ups (giving all shipping info) for a price.

you would have to figure it out after they said they were interested in it. because you would need their address, and how they want it shipped, and how fast. then you would add up the shipping - and a handling charge (for yourself, the time it took, the wrapping of it, insurance, etc). and then tell it to them. you can only do a universal charge if your going to ship a lot of things. or you choose the higher of the prices and use that as a default. but i'd ask first then get it. otherwise you may be sending this to japan on your dime (if you set up a default price).

You could start a spreadsheet and make not of all the parameters required for each piece before brining it to the mall if you're worried about being at work when you have to fetch it. That way, you can give a more current quote or or make an adjustment for distance as Mike says.

For all who have shipped before, do you take your pieces off of the stretched canvas if someone requests it? If so, how would you handle that precisely?

you can call UPS, FedEx , give them the size, weight and the shipping address of the package you wanted to send, they can give you an estimate how much you prepare to pay. just call the 1-800 numbers.

Alfred is right, but you can also go to those sites,on the Internet and and just make up a few sizes,of different pieces of your artwork and write down the numbers, for a guideline. Always use ground and if someone wants Overnight, then you'll have to check before you give the buyer an estimate and it should ALWAYS be an estimate,

I would go to their website, figure out what part of the country would cost the most (farthest from you), add 10%, then charge that for shipping.

When shipping to a potential customer I would ask for their Zip code Then go to USPS and enter the zip from where it is coming from and the zip where it is going, enter size and weight and the cost of the artwork ( insurance)
You will then get the exact price for shipping.
I stay away from DHS and UPS as they are really way to expensive and drives the price out of the ball park. Your post office is the best place.
