Mac's Osx Yosemite

So, what does everyone think of Mac's OSX Yosemite? I may need to upgrade ... Santa brought me half a Nikon D750 and my current iPhoto won't recognize the .NEF files. Looks like upgrading the OS is the first step to getting this resolved, but I'm reading a lot of bad reviews. I'm currently running 10.9.3 with no problems. Thoughts? Thanks ...

I'm on Yosemite and do not have any problems with it.

Ok, thanks very much, William. I'm getting close to pushing the button ... but ... oy ...

I`m also on Yosemite.. the only problem I`ve had is Preview got screwed up somehow.. thinking it was my fault, but still haven`t found a solution.. I opened another account and tried it there, and seems to be ok, so am thinking of moving everything over, but haven`t gotten around to it yet... other than that, I love it.

Lois - no problems with Yosemite, all software works fine, LR, PS, etc.

Is anyone running PS 5 or lower on Yosemite? I haven't upgraded yet either.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and for a while all was good, but since the last update the internet is excruciatingly slow and often pages, including FAA pages, for example when I do keyword searches of my own images for competitions, do not load at all. Don't know if it is Yosemite though, but I didn't have the problem before the latest update.

Thanks, everyone. I went ahead and pushed the button, but the first d/l wouldn't install, said it was corrupted. Wasted a bit of time trying to find the flippin' d/l ... it wasn't where it was supposed to be ... then it wouldn't let me trash it because it was open ... LordHaveMercy!!! Got that resolved, re-downloaded, and just tried to bring .nef images over from the camera ... and even after all that, iPhoto still won't recognize them. One more trick up my sleeve, if I can find the update page for iPhoto again ... then it's hair-pullin' time again.

Inge ... in reading about Yosemite, I saw other people with your problem ... but didn't research the fix.

And Sharon ... also saw something about Preview going bonkers after the update, but again, didn't research the fix, if there is any.

sigh ... sigh .. sigh ...

I haven't, because canon won't upgrade the driver for my printer (ipf5000). I think there is a workaround but I don't want to try it. Sometime soon i need to update my printer. The present one has a bad head, but I never upgraded the firmware so I can work round the problem.

Lois Bryan

Steven, that's one of the things I'm worried about, too .. the printer fiasco. I had that happen some time ago on a previous update with my older computer.

Well, I updated the OS, or so I thought, then updated iPhoto ... but it still didn't take the .nef images from the D750. Scratching my head, checked the apple icon, and dang if the OS didn't update to 10.whatever. Not a clue what's going on except that maybe the older OS had to go through an interim update before it could get to Yosemite? Cripes. I just bought the thing a little over a year ago.

So, I'm trying it again. And once I do, I'll try to get the iPhoto to update again.

Frustrating!!!!

But thanks for everyone's input. I'm hopeful this will get straightened out before I pull ALL my hair out.

: ))

Lois, I haven't upgraded to Yosemite as when it came out I had just upgraded to Mavericks, and Mac were surprised that I was still able to use iPhoto and PSE8, But I also found that Photos will be launched soon (possibly in the next few months) to 'replace' Aperture and iPhoto although I believe they may still be able to be used. I'm waiting to see what happens but I thought you might be interested in checking on Photos. There is a lot of information and I hope this link works as an example!

Hope you get everything sorted out.

Yosemite is ok, a few software updates have improved it. Still not as good as Snow Leopard or Mavericks.

The new photo software from Apple is supposed to be coming out soon, don't know if it will support Nikon files though.

I LOVE It! I am new to apple so I don't have any other OS to compare it with though... I had maverick briefly when I bought the iMac then yosemite came out so i upgraded immediately, Margaret I am waiting on the Photos APP from Apple,,I have held off on buying Aperture, I really love IPHOtO and the preview on the Mac is great too,, You can add signatures and a host of other editing features that are great too, I have 150,00 burning a hole in my pocket ,,,a reward I got on a visa, I am in a dilemma on which editing software to spend it on, Aperture even though it is being discontinued,, or photoshop elements etc, I just want something that is compatible with my iMa/iphoto iPhoto library and with an easy to use interface,

I had been very happy using Snow Leopard but software companies stopped updating their programs for people using Snow Leopard. Adobe wouldn't update CS6 and Canon wouldn't let me use their latest version of DPP. Also, it was getting to the point that new software wasn't backwards compatible to Snow Leopard.

I bought the Canon 7d MarkII in December but couldn't convert the RAW files from it because neither Adobe nor Canon would let me upgrade to their newest versions because my OS was too old. So I bit the bullet and upgraded. Yosemite seems okay but I would still prefer Snow Leopard. One thing I had trouble with right after the upgrade was using my Epson printer. I was finally able to download the latest upgrade from Epson but still do not have the preview function before printing like I had before. Also, be careful about where you download your upgrades from. It's best to go right to the software companies' website. Otherwise, it's easy to pick up some malware. That happened to me!

Whenever I buy a new computer, I get as much RAM as possible without breaking the bank. Many of the issues with Yosemite is probably people trying to upgrade without having enough RAM to run Yosemite properly. My Mac is a 2011 model and has 8 GB. It seems to be adequate. My next Mac will have at leasts 16 GB.

BTW, I have dual partitions on my Mac. Windows 7 is run on the other side. Everything seems to be working okay.

Hope this helps!

Lois, you need to have the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 6.01 which adds support for the Nikon D750 RAW files. You should be able to do a software update from the App Store on your computer and see that this update is available. Alternately you can click the link here and that should allow you to download the update as well. I've edited this post so not sure if the link is going to work or not.

Cheers!

Well, the good news is ... knock on wood ... I think I've got all the wrinkles ironed out. Like I said, knock on wood. iPhoto is now accepting .nef / .raw images again, and I've got Camera Raw up and working with the new .nefs from the new camera with a download for the D750. As to the Wacom Tablet, looks like I hollered before I was hurt, because it's working fine without any kind of update. Even the printer still works (I went through that printer problem too, Gerry, on a previous OS update on the old computer. NOT fun)!! So far, even all my little itsy bitsy artsy programs are working!!

The only thing that I've discovered not accepting the new images is, of all things, Nikon's Capture NX2 and NXD. I'll spend some time today to see if there's an update for them for the new camera. Since they are Nikon programs, there should be.

Not finding web pages loading slowly ... Preview works fine. In fact, none of the problems I've been reading about have surfaced so far. I guess it probably helps that this machine is only a little over a year old.

Marg, I've heard about the new photo program and have been wondering about it. I basically only use iPhoto for storage and organization ... will definitely check out your link. Thanks for adding that.

So ... WHEW.

I haven't done anything like this in a while and it was a bit daunting, especially since all I wanted to do was play with some new images.

Has anyone figured out how to easily access the Top Sites page without having to open a whole new tab / window? I know there's a pitiful drop down thing when you go to the search / http / addy bar ... and I'm busily re arranging it ... but I liked being able to just click over to that on the other OS. It was very convenient.

Huge thanks to everyone for your words of encouragement. It's so nice to know there's a group of wise and experienced folks I can go to when I start frantically pulling my hair out. ; ))

The only thing that I've discovered not accepting the new images is, of all things, Nikon's Capture NX2 and NXD.

CNX2 will not support D750 RAW files as Nikon stopped development of this software, which I believe is related to some legal issues they ran into when Nik was acquired by Google, though i'm not 100% certain about this. Anyway, CNX2 won't support D750 files. However, there is a neat little RAW2NEF converter which you can find here. This converter basically converts the files from newer Nikon cameras and makes them compatible for editing with CNX2, which some of us still love and continue to use. Give that a try and see how you like it.

Cheers!

Sai, I'm sure you're right about NX2. It must be that Google buy-out thing or something like that. Have you tried NXD ... ?? Lord have mercy, it does do a beautiful job ... much better than Camera Raw ... over and over I've started with the same file and worked it up in both, and wowzer ... NXD wins hands down. But Good Heavens, what a clunky, funny little piece of software it is. I'll take a look at your link ... thank you!

I had issues with "preview" as well, Sharon, but somehow I got it to work, although occasionally it says it can't open something.

I haven't had any other issues with Yosemite. Lois, i-photo seems to work fine on my computer after my upgrade, but I don't use it at all. Just PE 13. I don't like i-photo at all, to each his own, as they say, but Yosemite didn't seem to make anything stop functioning.

You might want to wait, Lois, for the Apple Photos to come out. iPhoto and Aperture are discontinued though will be around a long time.

Personally, I've been thinking about Yosemite as I'm still in Snow Leopard. I don't have issue with PEF files from Pentax as the past couple years I shoot everything JPG.

Anyways, Flickr has a similar program now to Photos called Camera Roll ... and Aviary is their editing software which has all the tools from Aperture that I use so .... I really like this.

The Flickr iPad app is fabulous!!

Have you tried NXD ... ??

Lois, I certainly have tried NXD, but that interface drives me insane and not in a good way! People said CNX2 had an idiosyncratic interface, and for the most part it does, but NXD took that to greater heights and not in a good way either! From the day I went digital, I've been a firm believer in that CNX2 produces the best output, and i've stuck with it ever since. With obsolescence being par for the course in the digital age, we certainly have to have back up options.

I wonder what the new Photos app is going to bring...better be something better than what Aperture was!

Cheers!

Sai -- So far, all I've been reading about Photos app it wont have the tools that Aperture has ... it will be just an updated iPhoto.

it will be just an updated iPhoto

Frank, I was hoping that it wouldn't be, but looks like Apple has decided to abandon the pro market and focus on other market segments...As long as they continue to support Aperture in future installs of OS X i'm good. But if history has any bearing, that support will go away after a couple of major iterations to OS X is my guess, we'll see.

Thanks for the update!

I feel bad for people who really learned to depend on Aperture. I remember about a year or two ago I was really on the fence between Aperture, Elements, Lightroom and something else (can't remember what?). But I've been so deep in Photoshop for so long, I just couldn't see what any of them could do that a combo of iPhoto for storage and organization and Photoshop for the bulk of my editing could do. Well, plus a bunch of other odd ball edit programs, including the aforementioned NX 2 and the evil NX D and of course, Camera Raw, which admittedly does do a nice job on chromatic aberrations.

All that having been said, I'll be interested in seeing what the new Photo program can do, but doubt if I'll bother with it.

Still bumping along with the new platform and all is well!

I think its a shame they are discontinuing support on aperture when "photos" rolls out, I would be interested in the flickr roll out but I don't want to transfer my images to flickr.I share a photo now and then .or is it safe and something i should seriously consider, I have a 1 tb hd ..but do need a little more punch than the iPhoto software, I do have programs like pixlr image tricks lite, Fotor that i can transfer my images to when I want a specific filter or effect,

Lois,,I am considering photoshop but feel it may be a little too much program for my needs or will seriously take up a lot of unnecessary space for the amount of use . I have until march 15 to decide, My 150.00 gift card expires then ,,i may just opt to get apple tv instead of a editing program...since I am so indecisive,

Sai -- I hear updates for Aperture is going away, but they are still 'supporting' the platform at least for the near future. We'll see what happens is right.

Personally, I'm transitioning to the iPad as mobile seems to be the direction things are going. Apple has not done any major updates with iMac since I can remember.

Judy -- I back up to my HD and use Flickr as independent back up [ all private ]. The new Flickr Camera Roll just made this a whole bunch easier.

BTW - I get more engagement on Flickr than any other social media .... especially since I turned 'sharing' on and also post to Tumblr separate from WordPress. Everything is attributed and the number of pirated ( did I spell that right? ) images plummeted. ..... I also share to other social channels from Flickr too.

Frank do you upload the images to flickr at maximum size? Maybe its me but when I go to my flickr site I only want to see images that I have made public,,,but when I view my "stream"or profile page all the images come up, the private ones etc and basically muddles up my presence on Flickr . How do I get past that and only see on my sites the photos that others see and that are public? I have the Flickr uploader installer sitting on my desktop but apprehensive because of unforeseen possible results,
Lois I think you are going to really love yosemite. I don't have any experience on the other OS but just know I love this one!

Judy, have you tried to logout of your Flickr account and browse your collection? If you still see your private images showing up when you browse your collection after you've signed out then it might be time to contact tech support @ Flickr. In addition, make sure that you change the setting on your images to "Private". This setting can be found under the Additional Info section on the right bottom of the page. The exact setting is "Viewing this photo". Click on that, choose "Private" and see what happens.

HTH!

Cheers!

Just found this email from Apple about Aperture:

Dear Aperture customer,

Last June, we introduced the new Photos apps for iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, along with
iCloud Photo Library, which lets you safely store all your photos in iCloud and access them
from anywhere.

When Photos for OS X launches this spring, Aperture will no longer be available for purchase
from the Mac App Store. You can continue to use Aperture on OS X Yosemite, but you will not
be able to buy additional copies of the app.

You can migrate your Aperture library to Photos for OS X, including your photos, adjustments,
albums, and keywords. After migrating, your Aperture library remains intact. However, Aperture
and Photos do not share a unified library, so any changes made after the migration will not be
shared between the apps.

To learn more about Photos for OS X, click here. If you’re interested in trying the OS X 10.10.3
Public Beta, which includes Photos for OS X, click here.

We thank you for using Aperture and hope you will enjoy the new Photos for OS X app.

Sincerely,

Apple

Sai I am just now seeing your response re the problem I am having with Flickr,,,When I view my profile when I an not logged in I don't see my images that I made private, But, when I am logged in they are mixed in,,,with my public ones, How do I change that, When I view my photo stream I only want when to see things that I made public..

Lois, one caution about yosemite, I could not get safari to open Facebook ,,,and there were other sites it refused to open too, According to Apple, it was caused by a "hiccup" (their favorite expression)Or was caused because it never installed properly, They reinstalled it and everything is working now, ..After that I had a problem with an app not responding properly,,,and the apple rep had me shut down the system and power it back on ,,,and the problem was solved. I think that may have solved the Facebook problem I never turn off my system,,,It automatically goes to sleep ,,,but apparently you should shut down periodically to allow certain functions to maintain themselves properly, or something to that effect, You can do it behind the scenes,,,or manually,,,just do it!

I had to upgrade to Yosemite in order to be able to use Lightroom 5. At first I was hesitant because of all the bad things I read about it. I consulted with a guy at the Mac store who told me to add RAM to my laptop before doing so, because of the space required to run properly. If you are running on Snow Leopard, make sure to do so because if not your computer will run really slow. I added the RAM and download Yosemite and haven't had a single problem.

One note....Yosemite and Canon DPP don't seem to mix together, so be careful if that is what you use for editing. At first it bothered me as that was what I used for a while, but after getting use to LR5, I don't miss it at all.
