Welcome.

I do like this photo. It is very atmospheric. Like the coldness, the light, the wide, flat landscape/shoreline.

there isn't anything special about this and it's not in focus - it would not print, too much motion blur. plus anyone with a camera can shoot it, so a buyer may simply leave.

Photography Prints
its a rather drab and dark shot, it could have been shot anywhere, and it doesn't want me to be there. there isn't anything going on.

i think the problem is - you love the beach so the images of it are of anything. like this cut in half bench that's also under exposed. don't love it so much that you overlook the image. show us in pictures why you love this beach, because i don't see anything here.

if that's supposed to be a bird, focus only on the bird, against a background where it's not blended in. its nice that you can ID it (hardly any tags though), but that can be anything in that tree, plus its so small i don't think it would even print as a card.

if you paint, then only paint. don't fill your gallery up with random snaps because it won't help you sell better. only post photos when you have more practice reading the shot, knowing what the story is, and making sure it's in focus when you upload.

Watch thy horizon. This shot is leaning CW between .5 or 1.0%

This one is leaning CCW.

Plus the house is placed awkwardly in the frame and is dark. There's not a lot of contrast in the cloudy day beach scenes. In some, the beach/ocean kinda fades into the sky and visa-versa. I'm not saying they couldn't or wouldn't sell, but most folks want sunny day beach scenes unless there is something that really stands out about the shots.

Only part of Doyle that is in focus is his nose. He's your dog and you love him, but why would anyone else want him on their wall?

A few problems with your photos…they are all underexposed to varying degrees and a some are out of focus. I do like the beach shots though…I'm on the beach on Cape Cod in winter quite often and I think you've captured the feeling of how cold and remote it feels at that time of year.

The sparrow shot is dark and too small for a good print. It's a crop, correct? Good bird photography is difficult with the best of equipment, and there are plenty of photographers here that do that as a specialty.I seriously doubt that one will sell.

Your dog shot is sweet…(I had a black lab a few years back…they are the best! :) but this is a snapshot and not commercially appealing. Plan out your pet shoots…some of my best sellers are shots of my dogs so it is possible.

I like your paintings…especially the Rorshach looking one :) Good luck to you!

Welcome Phillip,

First I am not a photographer... but follow a lot of the photography threads...I just thought I would share with you the single most, or what I consider single most, important piece of photography advice I know. Anyway awhile back when I asked for a critique Mike said something that stuck with me...as he said to you in different words...

When looking through the view finder we need to remove our emotions of the whole from the view through the lens. Besides the technical stuff, I really do feel that is the single most important, and possibly hardest thing to do.

@Mike, Thank you! When I get around to getting a camera, that advice, and maybe you could explain it better, will be the first thing I will always think of.

its like this. you love your dog so you take too many images of him. you like the picture because it has your dog in it. but all we see is scruffy in tangled poses, not in focus, weird angles etc. you like it because its your dog, we hate it because its bad photography . and when it comes to kids, it's even worse. it doesn't matter how soft or drooley they are, people are attached to the location, room, items in the image and they are overlooking that the image itself is bad. its easy to ignore the other parts when you have a vision in your mind of what it looks like.

its sort of like singing in the shower, you hear the singer in your head. but we, see all the cats at the window and hear all the dogs howling because it sounds nothing like what you think it sounds like. once you can break yourself from the location, or really hear yourself sing, you could either - stop and never do it again, your hurting people with that sound. or self reflect and take some singing lessons. and its the same for this as well.

show us why it was a good vacation. tell us why you like this location using images. this can be a lot harder than it sounds, you have to make the story and show it in pictures.

you also might want to change your avatar, and not have what looks like, toilet paper in the background. it's a first perception thing.
