What Are Considered Collections Of Work

With the question of how to be featured in the collections coming up every so often and the fact that I want to do some redecorating I got to thinking... What really makes a collection of work? So I started going through my own work to see what I could actually call a collection and came up with...not much. Thinking I may decorate with my own work I came up with four pieces (If interested they are the first 4 under my image tab ...and the orb needs to go on two of them)

To me a collection is a group of work that works well together. A collection of work that could be used to decorate an entire space to create a look or feel of unity and design...not just a group of work all purple or blue or whatever. To me there should be things that tie the pieces together. But what are those things?

This is not meant to be a discussion about FAA collections as I think collections to them might mean something altogether different, for different reasons, so please stay away from that.

Do you have any thoughts on how to create collections? What works? what doesn't and what does a collection mean to you?

As always my time here is limited by life so I will be back later...looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Please behave :)

Good thread (as long as people read your post properly lol)

I think of it as a series of work like my

Seascapes
Sweet horse scenes
Marbles

Etc

To me that is a collection

Others may feel genres etc

Watercolour still life
Oil still life

I have a few collection ideas for my gallery space I will implement over the next year.

Americana. Beach house. Nautical. Man cave. Patriotic/military and possibly flowing water.

Here's my take on "collections", with them all being b/w and the same similar format:

Val,
If you are considering series and collections the same thing then you have many images that I would consider a collection. Personally, I consider a few of my abstracts a collection because they were created from the same photograph and feature the same colors. I actually have three of my Teal/Aqua images hanging in our master bedroom and am considering hanging two more from the same series (collections).
Interesting thread. Thanks for opening it.

Abbie...LOL I guess everybody just thought this was another why isn't my work in collections thread. I'll try to change the title :)

JC...Great ideas for collections!

Greg...great black and white work!

Kathy...I guess it is more or less how we wish to interpret it That was something else I wondered is a series the same as a collection? Somewhere I read a series is more than three...is a collection more than that?

My thinking is a series would be something like the same place at the sane time or cars on a train maybe or sane tree in different seasons.

A collection to me is more a theme that works together. Perhaps a color or subject....

Marshmallows...

Collection pretty much equals series to me. Or theme.

I think of collections from the buyers point of view.
If someone comes along and buys a tradtional floral this month from you and decides to start collecting your work, chances are he's gonna come back for another floral, as opposed to an abstract landscape.
So put your florals in one collection for him.

Could be organized by their final resting place - Someone decorating the man cave, beach house, ski lodge, Italian restaurant, all probably have an idea of what their collection would include.

Thank you, Val.

Thanks for the marshmallow love :)

Agree with Edward on the place - I have lots of vegetable still life photos that people will buy 2 or 3 of to group in their kitchen. I tend to edit images that could be grouped together similarly so they look good together in the same space.

I always think of a collection as a group of images that 'go' or work well together - it might be a theme or a color(s) that compliment each other.

Marlene... Thank you I wondered about that.

Edward...I agree...I just have a problem figuring out what that should be.

Greg...you are very welcome...they are great!

Heather..."I tend to edit images that could be grouped together similarly so they look good together in the same space" I like that!

Roy...I guess it might have to be both.
