Camera Lens Covers

When I bought my new lens the camera shop recommended that I buy a clear lens cover for the lens to protect the lens against wear and tear, I was talking to another photographer and he will not use them because he believes they can affect t your image quality. I wondered about that when I bought it but since the shop so vehemently recommended it I use it regularly . What say You!

There are different qualities of lens filters. Better to protect your expensive lens!

It has been said to use a UV filter to protect the front element of the lens. I have never used one.

Here is an article about, using one or not using on. Really good read.

This question is as old as photography, and if you ask 5 photographers youīll get 10 different answers!

I donīt use filters to protect my lenses. Photography shops are interested in selling those filters, because selling things is their business.

Personally I'd rather not use them. Camera shop clerks will always try to sell you a UV filter when you buy a lens. I think it's part of their training.

they do reduce quality a tiny bit. if you get something uncoated it will be worse. it does protect your lens, i did scratch one of mine once. it happened in a flash. and if you shoot ocean pictures it protects it from salt spray. however i don't use one now because it thickens the filters and i vignette too much. usually the photo store will con you into buying some kind of $50, cheap glass filter to protect it. they don't cost that much unless its a good one. i would be suspicious if the camera shop brought it up. but its really up to you. a good cover could cost you a bit of money i use B+W MRC filters when i use them. but stopped, comparing the two, it is a tiny bit sharper without it.

"if you shoot ocean pictures it protects it from salt spray"

Thatīs the only time I use a filter for protection, on small boats.

The filter I got was very inexpensive,(8$) It seems weird to me to have a really good quality lens and then cover it with plastic(?) or inexpensive glass, You would think something would happen in the translation, Thanks for the feedback and for the link. I just found the box that the filter came in. Its the Stiffen uv protector,I just read the back and these filters won technical achievement awards and a scientific award from the academy of motion picture arts and science,,,,an Emmy for engineering excellence, I kinda think I will stay with it, I shoot a lot on the beach and noticed I had water spots on some of the photos I took that I was able to eliminate with the retouch tool in my editing software,The problem may be more pervasive without a filter. I kinda think that the overall potential for damage and dust is greater than the potential for image reduction?! Also, the lens is somewhat large and may be vulnerable to scrapes and scratches,
