How Does Work Get Added To Collections?

I was noticing various collections, and wondered how work gets featured in those collections. For example, there is an "Animal Portrait" collection, there are 33 separate "abstract" collections. Who adds them to the collection? Is there any way to apply to have an image in the collections?
