It is hitting Massachusetts as well. The high winds with the heavy snow will be damaging.

Be safe.

I was a New Yorker for 54 years..in July 2014 I moved to Savannah GA after last year's winter, couldn't take it anymore...be safe all my northeastern friends.

Sounds dreadful, good luck to all of you in keeping your power, that is always my main worry.

every time there's another report the amount goes up. i took everything in from the porch that was outside, moved things around so i don't trip over them when its buried in the snow. got the generator and gas out, i guess i have to find another hat, extension cords, and some kind of pants or something to dig stuff out. we'll move cars tomorrow, i live on the corner, so besides the driveway, and the front walk, i have to do the corner and the side of the house as well. and of course there is power loss, which i hope won't be an issue. but 65mph gusts is still a bit much, and with the powder snow (which i assume this is), it gets into everything and drifts.

Yes! Be safe....after our 7 FEET of snow in 2 days here in Western New York, 20" sounds so little...but from what I hear that is unusual for NYC and I hope you are all kept safe and sound. Prayers!

Stay safe my East Coast friends! I've been through several blizzards while living in Boston....one time I had to get a ride home from the National Guard. So, best to stay inside.

Interesting definition of blizzard just posted on the weather blog here in Chicago. Keep all of you in the path of this storm in my thoughts and prayers.

I live in NJ, and everyone is wondering of they should go into work, or of they will be sent home early, etc. The problem is that the storm will be kicking into ugh gear apparently just before rush hour in the evening. I hope Christie declares a state of emergency soon so people simply can stay home.

Jessica and Mike,

I am just up wind in the Hartford area. I got a little more food in. I can be
snow bound. I am doing intermittent fasting. That is a good thing. My food
stores wont be completely depleted tomorrow before the storm.

Nothing like hunger before bed.

I was just watching the "weather" and it appears this is not going to be great - but hey - it's NY. That being said - me thinks it got exaggerated just a bit - now predicting 12" to 20 something - appears Mass may be hit harder. Still and all - y'all should certainly not fail to be prepared.

"I hope Christie declares a state of emergency soon so people simply can stay home." What chicken little's we mortals be - it takes a (Mayor) or Governor to tell us when to hunker down, and not be stupid.

I am so happy that I left New Jersey 38 years ago and never turned back. I love seeing the snow, but just not all that goes along with it. I'm happy to do paintings of snow. This is one of my recent miniatures that is on exhibition at Leepa Rattner Museum of Art, 40th Annual Miniature Art Society of Florida Exhibition.

they brought our totals down to 18-24" phew, dodged the bullet there. though i guess better than 30". drifts on the other hand will be an issue. i'm hoping for tall piles where i don't have to shovel, and short piles where i do. if i had the materials, i would build a wall in in the direction of the wind, so the wind will create a natural lift to build the snow against the wall and not the sidewalk.... though holding back all that snow may be an issue.

4" makes pretty snow. 4ft not so much. after a bit, snow isn't pretty any more, and when its a fine dust, it doesn't stick to things, all you get is waves of snow, and its hard to walk in. we had one good storm last year, very sticky snow, and the timing was such that everything was already shoveled, but the snow stuck there. while not great for walking, i did shoot pictures then. everything had like 3" of snow on it, even wires.

I live on Long Island and we are going to get hammered with 24 to 30". We live on a main road and the plows are going to be piling up snow in front of our driveway. It will take days to dig out even with a snow blower. Thank goodness we have a generator. The bulk of the snow will be between 1 and 5 in the morning so I guess we will be out there with a shovel trying to clean the driveway between plows, ( or my husband will ). Stay safe everyone who is getting this mess :)

The sky is falling the sky is falling. What the hell did people do before weather sats? Come on people it's way over hyped. Yes there should be warnings so people can prepare but to trying to scare everyone is just wrong. Be safe

Yes, David, I agree the news media really does like to hype things up-they love a good storm. The lines at the gas stations yesterday were crazy and so were the grocery stores. Ever since super storm Sandy, people seem to be a little more paranoid out here on the Island.

same thing.....just a tad more Americana.

I do not know if Sean is burning the midnight oil or if the routers on the East Coast are slowing somehow with outages.
Things are slowing down.

I began my fast Saturday at midnight. I over slept into Sunday. I over slept into Monday. I can not sleep.
I got up at 3:00 am and made three eggs and sausage. I bought some dark chocolate yesterday afternoon
for this moment. I have had half the bar. My IGP 1 is down for at least a week. That is the theory anyway.
This means my body for at least a week is in repair mode. I should loose weight all week long. Next Sunday
and Monday I will get out of bed early. This was my first time fasting. Terrific experience. I will do better next time.
Meaning I will sleep Monday into Tuesday properly.

I got in something like 51 hours of fasting.

So I got up and worked this morning. I have my product. I might as well post it here. But zero debates folks.
This is not meant as a political statement, regardless of your beliefs. This is meant as art. This is meant

Also I want to see how it posts. So without further ado....

Global Warming

This work ten minutes ago had a tan background with a balance of warm and cool. Now I have added to the warm, the red. I have
shifted the balance of the hues. I had to do this to make the work more appealing, but it looses its sharp contrasts between the
sphere and the background. It is now an ironically warm statement, instead of a very sharp statement.

I could rename the work "Moths to the Flame".

Dorothy,

Abbie is considerably younger than I am, so I could not say that.

Oh and we have speed again.

Has Sean gone to bed?

Dave

Addition: To answer Lady Abbie's question how is everyone? I am full of dark chocolate.
Could not be better. It is dark out, I have no idea if I can get out of my condo later today.

PS, I dont lift shovels any more......my back remains intact.

Here in the Upper Valley region, the mountains have kept us out of the brunt of the storm. Just a few inches so far and no wind. Still looking towards a day of shoveling as it reaching us later today. Good exercise but take it easy everyone!

i survived the great montreal blizzard of 1971. ;))
can someone clue me in briefly why they are/were shutting down the whole city of new york? was there real danger or is this just politicians dramatically covering their asses?

usually they shut things down because they expected a lot more, often people go out, and are stranded on the road and they wanted to avoid that. back in 71 people had snow chains on cars, and i don't think they do that any more. even snow tires can only go in snow so deep. and combined with the winds they were expected, it's better to be safe. plus there was the impending flooding, which they probably did get in areas. they also want roads clear so emergency stuff can go by.

Menega,

Dont be so cynical about politicians. (tongue firmly in cheek)

When it snows in Connecticut and the schools are closed for the day, we have a saying, "the folks up in Maine are
laughing at us".

We take that mantra very seriously.

Dave

Menega Sabidussi

what no snow chains anymore? as an alpine country (austria, where i live now), depending on the weather and specific areas, snow chains are mandatory. of course, if new york doesn't usually get that much then people wouldn't have them.

Edward Fielding

The worst is having a macho boss who lives near the office and has a big SUV --- refuses to let a little snow get in the way of business. So the employees have to leave their kids at home and drive their little car from the boonies to the office.

It doesn't matter if you live in Maine or Texas. When there is a state of emergency declared people should be off the roads if they don't need to be there.

"Funny how weather in one area reassures others that they live in the right place - until its their turn to get hit by Mother Nature."

This is South Carolina. We are having a real mild winter so far and folks down here are loving it. I take it with a grain of salt because when it's July and August and we're having 40 straight days of 95 degree with with humidity thick as butter, I can't help but think I live in the wrong place!

David Bridburg

We have about 8 inches here, CT. Yahoo says 1 to 3 inches more. Tapering off by 1 pm.

It might not be coming down hard at all right now. It probably is just blowing around.
I can not tell for sure. The blizzard conditions are the wind factor. D'oh!!

We dont need no stink'n chains!

Dave

Mike Savad

snow chains tear up the street and are only used on buses when there is a huge storm. most tires don't even have studs, just rubber in certain patterns that make them work on snow and ice. if your set up for snow it's not so bad. but the city is hard. there have been years where they ran out of space to put it all. parking lots, and such were the dumping grounds. they had to put it all in dump trucks and toss it into the bay once, but i think that year was when the bay froze.

if i still worked for the company i worked for, we would be going in today if it wasn't for the ban. we once had 20" of snow, they forced everyone to come in. 1/2" of ice? yeah, come in. can't make it because you live on the bottom of a hill, and both sides are covered in ice.. too bad, a few points against your next raise. i really hated it there. brave the snow, get there almost on time, slip in their parking lot, your a second late, more points on your record...

Anyone getting hammered? I image along the coast its bad. I've been out shoveling twice but its light and fluffy. Wind is whipping up. Garbage and Recycling trucks made their rounds but the post office isn't going to deliver mail. Now that's ironic since they run ads about being out in all weather.

Mike Savad

people think they are supermen when it comes to going out. they stay in a hurricane, ice storms, snow, and they will all go out in it. delivery bikes, and all kinds of cars. they were talking driving winds, heavy snow, people could have been buried out there. i think the ban is there mostly to protect people from themselves. ideally though we were expecting 30" or more, at least for us it didn't work out that way. it would make more sense if the snow was over car roofs.
