A Candy Shop For The Eyes

I just watched "the Grand Budapest Hotel" and can honestly say that I've never seen a movie that was such an artist's delight to watch. The movie was filled with near perfect symmetry in nearly every scene. There were outrageous color blendings and complementary mixes....it was difficult to follow the story line, I was so taken. Follow the reds and purples.....
If you haven't seen it, treat yourself. It has won and is up for a slew of awards, has quite a cast of well known actors and has a sub plot about a stolen priceless painting.
BUT, most of all, see it just cuz you have an artist's eye and you will be able to enjoy it at another level.
If Siskel and Ebert were still around, they'd surely give it 5 brushstrokes!

Marlene,

This was a beautiful film and I saw it a few months ago when it first came out in NetFlix. The movie "Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon" was the same. I saw "The Trip" and felt like I needed to go visit there. Same with Tuscan Sun. Love when the surrounding land/vistas are given the same improtance as the characters!

I said the exact same thing watching it, Marlene. The photography is outstanding from the first scene.Wonder if the director of photography got nominated for anything. He should!

Edit: Ok, It was nominated for Best Director, Costume Design, Cinematography, Makeup and Hair Styling, Original Score, Production Design and Best Picture.

Thanks Marlene for the heads-up! From what I gather some of the foreign directors are very artistic and liked period pieces like "The Pearl Earring" "Copying Beethoven" staring Ed Harris. The sets looked authentic to the period without being overdone, less is more, it's not all about spending tons of money. I've seen movies that had bigger budgets but the sets weren't as interesting or realistic.

I wish I had seen this before we picked a movie last night. We watched Django Unchained. I thought the violence was over-the-top (the exact opposite of The Grand Budapest Hotel). I'll definitely look this one up next time. Thanks for the tip!

This movie is definitely on my list. I have had very mixed reviews from (non-artist) friends - it's great to hear the artistic point of view in this thread. I'm putting it at the top of my Neflix queue right now.

Last spring we took in a film festival of all the Wes Anderson movies. It was really interesting seeing them in a series as you could take in his favorite visuals and camera work, like the tracking shots. And the use of certain favorite actors.

Watching Grand B - see if you notice the change of aspect ratios.

Rich if you liked "Crouching Tiger" - then be sure to see "House of Flying Daggers"
...

Wes Anderson fans don't miss his next release!

Here's a trailer....watch it with no sound and just look for the symmetry f the scenes.
Then go back and watch just for the color red. The hotel employees wore deep purple....I'm gonna watch it again tomorrow with no sound!

Thanks Marlene for the heads-up. I'd heard about this, but wasn't aware of just how artistic it is. Will be watching this before winter is over, for sure.

Glorious!!!!! Thanks for letting us know!!! Sort of a chiaroscuro thing (which I personally love) going on, yes? So many of my favorite actors, too ... Ralph Fiennes, Jeff Goldblum, Owen Wilson, Tilda Swinton ... Wowzer!!!

You are so right, Marlene. The gorgeous sets and colors blew me away. I haven't seen that shade of purple in a great long while. It almost went too fast for me.

Hello Marlene, I can not wait to see it, no doubt it will certainly win more awards. I was just sitting here at the coffee shop and another patron over heard me comment about looking at your trailers you posted and she informed me she absolutely like it. Isn't he the actor who was in the English Patient he is an excellent actor as well as everyone else in the movie. Thanks for posting, my kind of movie and would have loved to have been involved on the set.

Cheers, Michael Hoard Actor, Artist, Photographer

I not only lost track, I was looking at them thinking "he looks so familiar!" lol

The writing is great as well. Just when you think it might get serious, there's a laugh out loud zinger.

really cool!!
(could have done without the replacement picture they put in place of the one they were fighting over though)

I'll have to put this on my list. I saw that it had garnered a whole raft of nominations for the Academy awards - thanks for sharing!

what a great read, Ed, thanks!
"highly aesthetic"...that's the ticket!

I don't know how I missed this thread! But yeah, Wes is an amazing director, his vision for aesthetics is far above most of his peers. Every movie he has made is a visual treat, but this one can easily be called his masterpiece. Everything just came together so perfectly.
