I paint a lot of square format pieces. I think the square format presents a little more of a challenge compositionaly, but that's one of the reasons I like doing them. Here are some of mine so let's see some of yours both paintings/sketches and photos.

Heather - I did not know that about Instagram. Very interesting how technology can sometimes have such an influence on art. Your pieces work well in the sq. format. Thank you.

I love working in a square format...almost all I do...not for any particular reason...just that I prefer it. Didn't know that about Instagram.

@ Phyllis Speaking of framing.. I sometimes make my own frames from scratch and that's another advantage of Sq. format - all sides of frame are equal therefore less math to figure out! Thanks
@ Val Thanks - so at least I'm not the only one who didn't know that about Instagram
@ Patricia we must have been posting almos simultaneously! Thanks. Nice work.

I have a Square Crop gallery, too, and when I checked it just now, I found I have exactly 50 images in it. I crop square when that's what I like best :) Here are three of mine. The first one, Raspberries, has sold. Diner #1 is usually quite popular when I enter it in contests, most frequently in selective color contests. And Tenacity is simply a personal favorite that gets very little love from anyone else :)

I don't 'paint' much anymore - but I have two galleries of square format digital abstracts - I like the format

I'm big on squares, too! Here are a few examples of my squares...
When I am searching for something that is hopelessly lost, my mother says, "It's gone where the woodbine twineth." I created this piece because I love the image that comes to mind when I hear this phrase. So whatever it is that you're looking for, perhaps you'll find it hiding in this piece.
I created this piece because I wanted to depict a tree feeding oxygen to the sky.
I created this piece as a celebration of free thinking. I am at my happiest and most creative when I am free from the cage of conventional thinking.
I created this piece because I wanted to capture those brief seconds between being asleep and being fully awake, the mingling of consciousness and dreams, and the precarious nature of the memory of a dream.
I created this piece because I was recently reminded of how powerful one's legacy can be. In this case, a promising young life is headed for greatness as a result of a tragedy in the distant past. The glowing legacy of a life cut tragically short decades ago lives on, providing comfort and joy to those who live on.
Within a tiny sliver of time (10^-43 seconds) after the big bang, the universe was born. The technical term for the creation of something from nothing is "Quantum Fluctuation." I created this piece because I wanted to try to visualize this incredible phenomenon.
His artificial eye made it possible for him to see from both eyes, but only his good eye was capable of conveying emotion. It, therefore, fell to that one good eye to get his point across.

I really like squares and find the square format appealing. However, I haven't used the square that much. My own created abstract digital paintings and a few kaleidoscopes are square. I would like to do more squares with attention to applying the golden spiral within the square.

I love the square format and have a small gallery devoted to it: http://richard-reeve.artistwebsites.com/art/all/all/all/square, for example:
Although strangely the grey image seems to have disappeared from my gallery on its own accord :-(

As a 'square' fanatic, I've really enjoyed looking through this thread! You'll find dozens of squares in my portfolio. 20 years ago, when I began working square, it was nearly impossible to find ready-made, square, mats and frames. These days, that's not a problem, which makes working square even more enjoyable!
I find squares particularly easy on the eye, like visual comfort food. They're also a stress-free fit into almost any decor scheme. What's not to love?
My most popular square series' are currently tied in sales. Today would be a great day for a tie-breaker! ;-)

Instagram may be the reason I don't care to go square. I just looked through my 288 uploads at FAA and believe this is the only square image I put here - but it's really an ovel in a square box. :)

I just realized how well a circular subject lends itself to a square format.
