For me, while I am wiring on a new crop of photos, I am listening to perhaps the inspirational folk/electronica/symphonic avant garde composer Sufjan Stephens, or folk/hip hop artist Josh Garrels, or
classical or jazz or Delta Blues.
What is on your sound system?

Avaritia, but I wouldn't really suggest it. It allows me to concentrate on my goals and thus hopefully getting away from this computer into a more productive day.

Pandora radio stations shuffle of Colbie Caillet, Nora Jones, Two steps from Hell, Lindsey Stirling, Pentatonix and some Nature Sounds Music..sometimes I throw Florida Georgia Line in there but can listen to only so much country. No ads..love Pandora!
Sometimes when I'm stressed from work I will step in to do art and will listen to youtube nature sounds with no instrumental or singing.

Total silence. I love it quiet.
Maybe because I grew up in funeral homes and we were not allowed to make much noise, out of respect for the bereaved.
Or maybe it was so we wouldn't wake the dead?

Silence when I'm editing photos or playing with graphics on the computer. Non computer art/crafty/whatevers, I like light jazz and if I want to sing along and play it loud, it's 60's and 70's music.

Just got a box of "new" reels for my reel to reel... first half was Johnny Cash... second half is MoTown...

Oh man Chris Bordeleau, I long to get Reel to Reels!! I grew up with my dad listening to them. Everything from Polish Polkas to Booker T and the MG's. Great stuff. What system so you play your reels on?

I have a collection of over 3,000 songs that I bring up on my iTunes. I hit shuffle and boom.... It's a surprise of one of my favorites....
I love the sing along songs. They help me create happy art.

Jacquiline yes! I have about 2,000 songs, and when I hit shuffle, it's like listing to my own radio station or Pandora... I even get the occasional Christmas song in August!

I have at the moment 39,263 songs in my iTune's library. I usually go through and choose an artist or album to play. I find that I listen to more obscure music than ever before because it is so much easier to select in iTunes and than if I had to go and put a CD in the changer. The music ranges from blues, bluegrass, new grass, classical, country, celtic, folk, pop, rock, british folk rock, jazz, big band, new age music, I think that pretty much covers it.

SILENCE ... not out of respect for the dead or any other justification. I am totally in tune to the moment of creation in myself alone without being jacked up by exterior vibes. My contemplation is my music.
Following the colon is a brief sample of what I listen to for you to try :

To ease the possibly harsh edge on my earlier reply, let me explain why silence is my preferred, required mode in creating visual art.
I was a dancer, and for decades, music to me was something that motivates movement. I could not conceive of listening to music that I could not move to. My focus was on the beats, the phrasing, the quality of the notes, the motivational factor AS IT WOULD DRIVE PHYSICAL MOVEMENT. In other words, music was hardly ever a passive background for me - it was an active, motivating component that drives a four-D, visceral, organic engagement of the human body. I was always wired to move to it, so having it as ONLY a background is NOT an option. I do NOT react to it this way in a creative state.
I am on a different plane with visual art - a plane that absolutely requires silence, so as not to even remotely prime me to want to move under the influence of music.

Bizarrely, I don't have any background music at all when I'm working. Just the noises of the house: kids, my animals, neighbors dogs, etc.

If I have anything on it tends to be classic rock, but for some reason after reading this forum I think I will try some whale songs today.

I think I am going to get a soundtrack of Loons. Their calls are incredible... haunting and beautiful and other-worldly. It should be a great soundtrack to landscapes.
PS: Temple of the Dog is awesome!

If you must go the passive motivational music route, then exotic, obscure, electronic is the way I would go (e.g., William Orbit - STRANGE CARGO, "I Paint What I See"). But in the day, I would have used this for cool-down stretch music.

I've got a Akai 4000ds mkii reel to reel . My friend was cleaning out his mothers house and it was going to go in the trash... it came with two tapes... I did not plan to keep it but it looked so cool on my mantel... then I listened to it and was hooked. I have never heard anything as smooth and full... and it looks awesome...

Great topic. I am working on a really exciting project for release later this year. The soundtrack to this creation? The Tron soundtrack by Daft Punk. Powerfully deep and and awesome vibes

At the moment, Dustin Kensrue and Ben Howard. But when I'm in the mood for chilling out, I've been listening to some Celtic music.

I combine my love for reading with my passion for art by listening to audio books while I draw. (See Book thread for some of my favorites.) I also listen to public radio podcasts, with RadioLab, This American Life, and The Moth being my favorites. Sometimes I listen to music. I like Radiohead, Califone, Beck, The Be Good Tanyas, Lucinda Williams, Valerie June, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, and many many more.
@Bob, I love Oingo Boingo! They're loads of fun!

Occasionally I will turn on the classical music channel on cable tv, but usually it's nothing. I really do prefer silence all day--until my kids get home from school.

I am in love with a UK band called London Grammar. I put them into a Pandora channel and I get lots of great mood music perfect for painting.

When I work on illustrative art, I usually have Pandora tuned into Bach or Handel. When I work on comics, I usually choose Irish traditional music.

I wish, when I'm deep into working on an art piece my background music would be classical guitar. Instead my background noise is whatever my family has on TV, the washing machine, and the constant buzz of cell phones. Yet in retrospect, when I consider the noises around me, I realize the family clatter is actually music to my ears and better than any classical guitar after all.
