70d Anyone?

I always shoot in manual and started having problems with the aperture button sticking on my old T4i, so that when I spun the dial to set speed sometimes the aperture changed instead. That sucks big time when trying to shoot wildlife so now I've got the long lens on an even older crop sensor Canon. It works, but it's slow so I'd like to upgrade when I can. I just paid off the 6D (just under the wire before interest kicked in!) so there's no way I can spend a bunch on a crop sensor body now. If I could, I'd get the 7D Mark II but I can't so now I'm reading reviews for the much cheaper 70D and they are mixed. Do any of you use it for shooting birds and other wildlife and if so, is it a good camera for that purpose?

I had one, I sold it to my daughter, I also have the older 7d, I thought the 70D was a great camera, it has a lot of the same things the original 7D has, the focusing system is pretty close, a few differences, all cross type that's a good thing, the AI servo works great, it doesn't have the buffer that the 7D has but coming from the T4i you wont notice that.
It is a great video camera, the duel pixel focus system is just for the video, it doesn't effect still photography.
In short I liked it, can't say anything bad about it, but it will take a little getting used to.
Hope this helps.

From the reviews I read, it sounds to be a fine camera. What I was exceptionally happy to see was that micro af adjustment has been brought back to the xxD line with this model. I can't imagine why that feature was excluded from the 60D.

If you are looking at the 70D new, then this might be an alternative for around the same price.

That's what I use for wildlife.

Like Adam just recommended, I just bought a refurbished 70D from Canon. The price seemed to fluctuate quite a bit as I was keeping an eye on it. I ended up having to buy it with a kit lens even though I already had the same kit lens from my Rebel because the "body only" deal was always sold out. The price was still better than new. I received it at the end of December and so far its great. I am still learning all the bells and whistles since it is quite an upgrade from my Rebel XTI that I got back in 2007. I just used it this weekend with a rented Tamron 150- 600 lens and it performed great.

If you don't mind me asking, the 70D caught my eye in the discussion category.. I have a 60D, and was thinking about up-grading to the 70D. Would that be worth it? and also, I see refurbished as been purchased..I've always been afraid to purchase refurbished, but am hearing more and more about that.. Do the refurbished come with any warranty? and if it doesn't work correctly are you able to return the same as a new model?

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like the 70D will be much better than the old T4i. I hate to admit it but I know that when I scrape together the money for the 70D I'll still be wishing I had the 7D Mark II and will eventually find some lame way to justify spending more to get that. I just read this page comparing the 2 cameras and the Mark II looks like it might be top of the line for a crop sensor Canon. http://www.digitalrev.com/article/canon-7d-mark-ii-vs/Mjg4MzI4MTU2

I've bought used from B&H and from Adorama but I've never bought refurbished. I've always been leery of refurbished, as if there was an inherent flaw in the equipment that will cause it to malfunction again. Kind of like getting a lemon back from the garage and expecting it to work like a new car. I don't know Canon's return/warranty policy on their refurbished but B&H's warranty is 90 days on used. They seem to think that if something's going to go wrong, it will happen within the first 3 months.

Debbie, I don't mind your asking. Hopefully we can both learn enough here to make an educated decision.

I like my 60D. I bought it right after the 70D came out and saved a few hundred dollars.

To me it's mostly about the lenses.

The refurbished camera bought through Canon came with a 1 year limited warranty. It sounds basically like the one that comes with new cameras. The camera a received looks like new and works great so far but I have only had it about a month and have only been able to get out to shoot with it a handful of times. I just checked the website and they seem a running a bit higher now than when I bought. They may have been having holiday specials. I bought when they were having a 30% off sale. I got the camera with a 18-55mm lens for under $900. Keep an eye on the site for sales!

Now I'm pretty sure I want to hold out for the 7D Mark II. I'll regret it if I don't. Same price on both BH and Adorama but Adorama is kicking in one year of free oopsie insurance and they are offering it on Bill Me Later. I used BML to buy the 6D and managed to pay it off within the 6 months no interest period. I hate to go back into debt when I just got out of debt but it's winter migratory season here and I really want to get out and bag some birds. I will make myself hold off and watch for used/refurbished for a while first.

Well, gulp, I did it. Ordered the 7D Mark II body. Checked all over the net for a better price and the only cheaper option was gray market on Ebay so I talked to B&H and Adorama to see who could sweeten the deal just a tiny bit. I usually go with B&H but for the same price Adorama is throwing in one year of drop insurance and UPS Next Day Air so I'll receive it Tuesday morning in time to go birding Wednesday. I'm really excited but it means I'll have to be very careful for the next 6 months so I can pay it off without being charged interest.
