Worlds Best F.a.a. Discussion Contest Discussion

So lets have an informal (fun) contest. What would be the best discussion idea for FAA? I went to the World Discussion Forum and their most popular d's were Politics followed by Religious and Moral issues. Pretty sure those would suck like purple potatoes in here. So please..feel free to throw out ideas for what you think would be the "Worlds Best" FAA Discussion EVER! There will eventually be an unofficial winner for this...by an unofficial judge someone from in here deems " The Judge"....oh yeah and feel free to drop a small image in here along the way. But the image must be in relation to your idea for a discussion, or not. Shameless self promotion encouraged as well, not that anyone in here would do that but...it's ok..go for it! This could evolve into FAA's and maybe the World's Best Discussion. It's really up to you creative people. Just let it flow like free Association. This is not an image dumping thread however, it's an idea dumping thread, and proud of it.

Thanks....The Royal but Unofficial yet Authorized Discussion Forum Proctors of America

Oh, ... that's easy.

The best discussion for FAA would be: Post Your Favorite Photo From A Discussion, and since many of those discussions are ONLY photos, this would just perpetuate the practice of image dumping in the name of ... discussions.

I'd like to discuss the effects of politics and religion on street photography in reference to the inclusion of derivative copyrighted works expressed as public art. ;)

Glenda Stevens

Hey Joseph, how about discussing the idea that fine art paintings and fine art photographs can't compete with each other. Speaking from experience, as a painter I always lose when my work is presented against a photograph.

HW Kateley

@Glenda. Interesting. As a photographer I'd have thought the reverse...

Phyllis Beiser

Glenda is correct I am afraid. Unless you are a photo-realist, how can an imperfect work compete with a flawless photograph. There are occasional exceptions but I stress, occasional.

HW Kateley

flawless photograph? Interesting. Photographs are not always "flawless", nor do I believe they need to be to achieve depending on what you are trying to convey. Objectively perfect photographs aren't always the best photographs. First one must define what is and is not a flaw. Not common ground by any means.

Lutz Baar

The best discussion idea for FAA would be a discussion about the notion "fine art".

A real discussion about what the notion means in general, for experts, for amateurs, for the guy on the street...

Should there be a definition of the term?

Is it the same for Americans, Europeans etc or is there differences in the use of the term?

What is the relation between a fine art print and fine art?

I know lots of people would settle with a statement like: "for me fine art means.........." But you cannot discuss anything in a meaningful way if you kidnapp a notion by filling it with your own personal content, right?

Glenda Stevens

The professional photographers and painters have a natural inborn talent and instinct to know and observe what fine art is. The general population only see what they like good or bad.

Charlotte Stevenson

ok forgive me if this has been discussed already... but, I am just wondering... and maybe this could be a discussion... If it's Fine Art AMERICA then why are International Artists included ( iam not against them, I am just wondering) AND why all the images of things and places outside of America? and also on that note... maybe we could discuss ...if it's FINE ART America... then why are so many images not Fine Art (like sports team art, vacation photos, cartoons, random quirky stuff (like some of mine, lol) etc...)

Lutz Baar

So Glenda, it seems you look at the notion fine art to be kind of a quality term?

Roger Swezey

Let's have a discussion on:

Why if someone has a great idea for a discussion and post it here in this thread, hasn't that someone already posted it as a discussion topic in the Forum itself???..

Edit:

Maybe now,I have to go and post this idea as a forum topic.

Lutz Baar

So Charlotte, it seems you look at the notion fine art to be kind of a "what content" and "what craftmanship" term?

Glenda Stevens

Absolutely! I've always been drawn to works that look masterful no matter if they are abstract, impressionistic, realistic etc... I prefer Looking at the carving of the statue of "David" then looking at a 340ton stone placed at a museum and calling it art. Sure God made the stone but He also created Michelangelo to sculpt a piece of marble no one else could do!

HW Kateley

I think the alternative products tend to bring the "fine art" aspect into question. Not that you can't have fine art on a iphone case, a pillow, or offer it as a stock license. It's a question of perception.

Charlotte Stevenson

not sure Lutz, I guess I may... I also agree it may be a quality kinda thing like Glenda perhaps? I think it may be hard to define being that everyones definition and perception of what it should be will vary depending on different perspectives and influences.

HW Kateley

@Glenda. When I see things like that, I often wonder if the artist is having a little joke, which of course would be art. :)

Lutz Baar

So Glenda, does this mean the curators of the museum that put a 340 ton stone calling it art act like the general population, only seeing what they like, lacking talent to decide on art, as you described it in an earlier entry?

Roger Swezey

It appears to me,

That a discussion about "Art" has already started instead of keeping to a discussion about discussions?

Is that "trolling" ? ( getting off topic)... A word I read about so often these days.

Lutz Baar

Charlotte, you wrote: "everyones definition and perception of what it should be will vary...

Are you referring to the notion fine art or to an item of fine art?
I am sure the opinions will differ on items of fine art.

But the notion fine art, do you think we can discuss meaningfull if everyone can decide for theirselve what it should be? If so, what about other notions like music, freedom, religion, home- decor, fashion, etc - can we discuss if everyone has their private term about things an perceptions?

Glenda Stevens

I really don't know why the curators decide what they want to display. Maybe it is their private joke on us, their way to provoke us to think what is great! Then I wonder what the money trail is.
I guess we really did start " trolling "
My idea for discussion: It's GREAT but is it ART

Joseph J Stevens

Great start...Actually some superb Discussions already on the potential Worlds Greatest FAA Discussion ideas...so keep them coming ! Discussions and sub discussions allowed in the process, the qwest for the Worlds Greatest FAA Discussion idea..is a long and winding..inquisitive road...it may even embrace some trolling.

John Wills

Easy one, the best discussions that would never end, ever..... would be....

Are photographers artists? Or.. Is photography art?

Roger Swezey

Here's a GREAT TOPIC...Especially for ME:

DANGLELY BITS???

Art Prints

Or
NO DANGLELY BITS???

Art Prints

Kevin OConnell

Glenda, maybe people think about paintings as originals. Original paintings are much more in demand than a photograph, until its no longer an original. Their is also, most of the time a huge price difference, again in favor of the painter. This is mostly a site for prints, which photographs are made for. Once you aren't selling you original and just prints of that original, your fair game. Your painting now is judged differently as a print.

Roger Swezey

Kevin,

Your last posting, particularly this sentence:..".Once you aren't selling you original and just prints of that original, your fair game."

Is a Great Topic!...and deserves a thread of it's own....I'm going to high-jack it now.

Darice Machel McGuire

An idea for a great discussion is: Should artist form a union?

I attended an art symposium last weekend and this topic was brought up by an art director of a gallery from Oahu. One artist in the audience was very vocally in favor of the idea.

Roger Swezey

Now let's get Serious

SCREW or UNSCREW FROST??

Photography Prints

John Haldane

What if he isn't ...?

What would you ...?

How would you ...?

Michael Dillon

If photographers had to take photographs of their photographs there would proubly be less photography.

Roger Swezey

If photographers take photographs, what do/should they leave in their place.?

Michael Dillon

I mean like the old days when photographs were on film and had to be developed Roger.I was being facetious.

Joseph J Stevens

Yes Michael well back in the day, before digital photos ...there were allot less photos in general ...especially prints of fine art paintings. Technology has resulted in an overabundance of images..images are disposable for the milenials...and it's so easy to create their own. Now with 3 d printing the same thing will happen to sculptures. Microsoft has hologram technolgy coming and in Wndows 10 this will change the way we interact with art, work, everything. Augmented reality they call it.

So is technolgy the end to Art as we know it?

Joseph J Stevens

Yes Cynthia I liked that one (HW's) as well, although there is a small chance it won't be the Worlds Best FAA discussion...unless we have the inclusion of John's question of weather or not photographers are artists...and can they compete with each other as per Glenda and HW, even in (Rogers) frosty conditions with or without a union (Darice).

Marlene Burns

i LOVE that the most popular discussions on the World Discussion Form, were politics and religion!!!!!!

Charlotte Stevenson

Joseph, I think you are onto something with regard to the effect of Technology on Art as a discussion. There are so many aspects of that one subject to delve into... even into the way people do not slow down long enough to not only view Artwork... but, to actually stand in awe over an amazing creation from a gifted artisan and take it in an emote over it... Does anyone even do that anymore? ANd what are they missing out on when they don't?

Joseph J Stevens

Good point Charlotte. To me there is something special in viewing an original work of art...call it an essence or what have you. People still do it..the museums are full back here in the east..but for the most part people fly by and look at the "historic" art...not sure how many actually stand in awe. Went through the MOMA MET BARNES etc with several smart millenials and they pretty much (when they could be) were on their phones or tablets the whole time or taking selfies with the art. Maybe there is a market for Art to Include in Your Selfie.

Bill Stephens

Really want the best discussion? Give ALL members total freedom of speech in the discussion.

Robert Frederick

Sorry Bill, your not allowed to discuss free speech

Hands down, my all time favorite topic is "are photographers artists". It has yet to be definitively determined. There should be a panel of experts designated consisting of ONLY PHOTOGRAPHERS, maybe a sculptor of metal, but definitely no painters as they are too quick to judge.

My alternate choice would be how slow my sales have been this month.

I always love to watch Mike S. critique someones photos (I'm still not sure why anyone would ask for it)

My favorite this year so far is John Haldane's "and now for something new".

Bill Stephens

Robert, I tried doing discussions about "are photographers artists". Every one of the discussion got shut down.

Now, I am BOTH, and I think you must be able to be BOTH, for the "painter" has to "analyze" much more to make a work happen than the "photographer". Creating a great painting is much more "involved" than making a great photo ( even with filters and such). And really Photography is usually just the beginning of what a Painter uses in the creative process. Hey, go start a discussion on that.

Mo Freelton

I was going to go down that old road of "How digital painting is not really painting"

Mostly for a joke and realizing it typically inspires a lively debate----maybe L.S. will chime in on this one......

However a more serious thought come to mind

And Totally skipping the part where we say we make art for ourselves------where do we garner the most satisfaction?

When we are recognized by the "Upper Crusts" of the art world or when the common man (or woman or even child) tells you what your work means to them

Sales are always a benchmark (or usually)---maybe it's that hard earned dollar that can budget for a print??

I've spent a great deal of time "Out There"----not online but in person in varied venues----I know where I fall on this issue

You??........Does a prestigious mark of recognition, mean you've arrived?...no longer have to work or try so hard?---having your name sell for you....would this seem a tad incestuous in the greater scheme of the world?

Or when we receive accolades at the street level----do we think that talk is cheap? or is being accepted by the masses a more noble goal?

Boils down to honesty and sincerity----can we see it when it occurs?

Joseph J Stevens

The thing is what could possibly be resolved in a discussion about whether photograhers are artists. It's unresolveable and subjective...ah just like religion, politics..and moral issues. I guess it raises the question ...what is (Worlds) Best?...most engaging?...most unresolvable?, most beneficial?, most provoking?, most interesting? most ego boosting?, etc etc etc...I would like to think the worlds best FAA discussion would provide the best tangible benefits to FAA members..be it practiclal, mental or spiritual...or all of the above. Perhaps the Worlds Best FAA Discussion is the Discussion on what is the Worlds Best FAA Discussion...as it spawns other discussions along the way..and may never have to be resolved.

Robert Frederick

Hey, wait a minute y'all. I'm being sarcastic. I really do not want to discuss that, but its like a train wreck - something about those discussions always sucks me in. I like painters, some of my best friends are painters, they are just slower at art than photographers.

Joseph J Stevens

hah..funny..what if Photography had been created /discovered 500 years before painting? What would be fine art then...halograms are coming and augmented reality...what will art be there? Virtual? Will the creators be artists? Will we sell halographic "prints" for the upcoming Windows 10 which is enabled for its Halogram viewer. In ten years your reality will be completly augmented by Halograms. Some might say it already is. Check out the link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aThCr0PsyuA Paste the link to see the MS halogram that's here already...and about to explode onto the scene.

Robert Frederick

Dang it! Now I have to start shopping for Halocams?

HW Kateley

Painting is craft, photography is craft, casting is craft, drawing is craft, etc, etc. Some applications of these and anything else in the realm of sentient action can be art.
There is very little art without craft, but plenty of craft without art. just my opinion. Art conveys, and the forms of such conveyance can be as wide as imagination allows.
