Should I Stick To My Art Only?

Should I stick to my art only?

I sell more art prints than I do photography. The reason I ask is because of my time. I am a full time engineer and do this as a hobby. I love creating my art and doing the photography. I have about three original pieces of art going on and a large amount of photos to process. I seem to find myself deflating to the computer as it is quicker. I can edit a photo and have it posted in no time compared to a piece of art. I guess this might be why there is more photography on here than art. I have plans to do more local photography but should I finish my art pieces?

If I were only worried about selling, I'd stop shooting so many trains. Do what makes you happy.

What do you want to be known for?

Good points. I want to be know for my art. I am not that great of a photographer. If I concentrate on my art do I need to remove my photography? I have thought of starting another one that only has my artwork on it. Is it important to separate the two? Knowing how important branding is, it might be the avenue I should consider.

I agree with Joseph and Edward. Do what you love and want to be known for. You have some beautiful photographs, by the way! But just because you "can edit a photo and have it posted in no time" doesn't mean you should. If you love it, put it up. If you start sticking everything up here that seems passable, then you've lost your artistic vision and have become a business-person. But that's up to you, either way.

Much esaier to leave everything on one account and separate in galleries as you have done. I think it makes branding easier and won't confuse folks when you post to social media or hand out business cards. Ryan Burton is your brand name; you do multiple things with your creativity, unlike me for example.

Do what sells better. Then you can better afford to keep painting. Maybe I should give up my photography as well....

Being picky but....You probably answered your own question when you said "art only". People who don't believe photography is an art should not offer photography for sale on a fine art site.

@Ryan, first hand I want to thank you for capturing the old world charm New Orleans truly is from your perspective. I was pretty much the artist in my earlier years and made the transition to photography. Because like so many members we are multi-talented artist and some photographer's as well. We are an elite type of individuals and have the ability to reveal the world our creativity. I would have to say include your art and your photography as well, it does reveal to the viewer the diverse talents we possess as artist

Personally, I am always on the go and prefer the outdoors instead of being confined sitting at my drafting table. Water colors is my favorite medium and only indulge when I get the desire to produce them.

Never say never, what you perceive is not what other's perceptions of your work represents.

Not considering photography art could be the answer but personally I DO consider the image below art. Great composition. Wonderful colors and quite marketable.

I will just say as a general rule I am not a big fan of the type of art you do BUT I really do like yours, I don't know what it is about it but for whatever reason it seams organized, and that is the only word I can come up with for it, organized, everything in it's place, it has balance, you have some nice photos too, but your abstracts...!!!

Since you already have a "day" job... would concentrate on what it is that you enjoy vs speed of getting things done. I feel the need sometimes to do and not the other. But I leave it up separated into Galleres!
