Do wildlife pictures sell well?

From what I can tell, nature and wildlife are a hard sell these days. I have been trying to market my stuff for many years with little success. If you use Google Keyword Tool, and see what words people are putting into searches, you will find out a lot of neat things. Eagles, deer, etc....not much searching going on, but try "cool iPhone cases" and you will see what the world really wants. :P

Problem with wildlife images is that everyone has them. They are a dime a dozen on this site and many others. Unless it is completely outstanding or unique in some way, you'll have a tough time standing out from the crowd. For example - do a keyword search for whitetail deer and see how many come up. Best sellers at the front of the line.

Yours as uploaded aren't large enough to sell on any product.

Do people win in the lottery? Yes, every single day! Unfortunatelly, in a numbers game, quality is only one small part of the whole selling-equation (not even the most important one).

it depends how good they are. it depends how you market them, how original they are. your images are microscopically small, they are the smallest thing i've ever seen here. the question of the day is -- would you buy your own work and hang it on the wall? that will answer your question.

20% of my sales have been wildlife photos so far but I have only sold 5 prints...coincidentally 20% of my sales have been black & white also.

Sure, if they are outstanding. If the viewer says to themselves - "I could take that" then it probably will be a hard sell. How do your images hold up to the competition?

Thank you all for your help. I'm new to this and I have a lot to learn. I appreciate all of your responses.

Shoot what you want, not what you think "may" sell.

Right now I would begin to understand your camera and work on your photography. Only upload image sizes that come out of your camera at what ever pixel size say if it is 3000x2500 that is the size you want to upload. You can downsize them but keep in mind when you do that it will limit the size options for your potential customer.

Yes wildlife images sell. http://aimee-maher.artistwebsites.com/saleannouncement.html?id=f23c51512d6b31efa1a54a67afc81975

My landscape images outsell my wildlife images by about 10 to 1. But I shoot wildlife anyway because I enjoy it so much! Especially the eagles.

simply speaking, your work has to be at least as good as the stuff being posted in this thread or it won't even be noticed.

Most of what I sell is wildlife pictures. I do fairs locally for about three quarters of the year and our community is (luckily) really into wildlife photographs. People love to share stories about the animals they've seen and there's a pretty big birding community here. Some animals (like deer) are so common, photographs of them are a dime a dozen. Unless you can come up with something a little special, you'd probably get lost in the crowd here. My shot of a fawn in a creek was published in a special edition of Canadian Geographic magazine's Best Wildlife Photos five years ago...I think the angle and closeness are a little unusual and maybe having the maple leaves in the shot helped since the Canadian flag is a maple leaf. From what I remember, they were looking specifically for pictures of animals in water for that section of the magazine.

I think landscapes probably sell better than wildlife though and I keep telling myself I should do more!

I still photograph wildlife because I love it...it's unpredictable and you never know what you'll come home with or what amazing thing you'll see. What few sales I have had here have been mostly landscape but these two sold for me:

There is a market for it but it also depends on what it is. One of the best shots I ever got was an alligator throwing a bobcat into the air, but I doubt anyone would want THAT hanging on their wall. But then again you never know...

And then the moment happens when you know you are screwed : ) Automotive photography anyone?
