Puzzled By Visitor Count Frequency

Here's what I'm seeing on many of my visitor counts and it seems impossible that a single computer could view my photography so many times in so little time. What is happening and how or why is this being done? I mean it looks great for visitor traffic but it feels useless. anyone have a feel for this? Here's an example if you can see the count under statistics on my page: http://1-rich-collins.artistwebsites.com/featured/mountain-goat-rich-collins.html If not they are below, thanks.

Looks like you have a fan from NYC!

FYI - typo in your bio "Outside od this website"

Looks to me like someone tweeted it....or a bot with a stuttering problem.
it's a common site around here.

Andrew Wijesuriya

sounds to me like a auto accessing program which apparently isn't able to log onto the site the first time.

You guys are funny, but can you actually see my visitors like I can? I don't get this but perhaps you guys are correct, let's see we have bots, stuttering problem, auto accessing, and thanks Edward, "FYI - typo in your bio "Outside od this website" I thought I fixed that yesterday.

So this is common?

The real issue to worry about is your extremely low visitor count for 4.5 years on this site. Did you just start uploading? Are your promoting?

I'm having opposite effect.Nothing for couple days. Member since 2010 but just started uploading 1 week ago.

Funny - it seems like January is the month everyone dusts of the old account and starts to give it some attention.

I have had the same thing happen to me, except it's been going on for weeks. It's not a very good photo, but China seems to like it!

Edward, yes I've been here awhile but recently retired and have restarted uploading again. As for promoting I have only done FB, Twitter and my blog. Though I haven't looked you must be doing much better, let me know what is working for you.

Louise Reeves

Those are all bots. Not necessarily one ISP, but more than likely several search engines. You can get a lot in one day, nothing for a few days and back again. Only pay attention to individual areas, not those big groups. Some of the more common are: New York, Seattle, China, Russia and Beverly Hills.

Rich Collins

Thanks Louise, while I have heard the term "bot" I am unfamiliar with the meaning. Let me try to put this together. You are saying that sometimes when someone searches via keyword that search engine will find me a dozen times within a minute? Just surmising here.

Floyd Snyder

There is nothing common or useful about the views here. Nothing at all. They are totally useless. They are 80% bots and 80% of the remaining 20% are from fellow FAA members that do not buy much.

CJ Anderson

I have several photos that are frequented by NY and Beverly Hills within minutes of each other. I just chalk it up to someone liking my image and they may be discussing it with a buyer/rep. Feel flattered! I do!

Rich Collins

Floyd, tell me how you know that. That's a pretty abrasive attitude.

Rich Collins

CJ, that's exactly how I was feeling before opening this discussion up. Now however I have begun questioning the legitimacy of the multi-visits.

If you have a premium account you should be using your Google Analytics for complete and in depth statistics

Joseph C Hinson

There are bots that come here and some are in NY and Beverly Hills. But logic tells us that not every visitor from those two places can be bots. I always know that I used my wife's phone one time to see my site and the visits showed from Beverly Hills when we are actually in Columbia, SC. With that said, a lot are bots and you should search the discussons for the weekly bot threads.

Rich Collins

Lady Isabellah, I am using GA on my blog, but have no idea how to use it here. I am not an accomplished IT person. But thank you for your suggestion. I hope you are doing well.

Joseph thank you and I will do as you suggest.

This may well come to nothing as it appears there are no solutions for eliminating bots, whatever the hell they are. But thanks to everyone for their input.

Louise Reeves

"I always know that I used my wife's phone one time to see my site and the visits showed from Beverly Hills when we are actually in Columbia, SC."

It wouldn't matter where you are.

Rich: It's not when someone in particular is using a keyword. It's more like organizing a closet full of keywords. By a class of 6 year olds. In other words, as Floyd said, useless bits. The only time if you are checking your views that you should bother looking into whether it resulted in a sale or you can rejoice in knowing it was seen by real eyes is when the location is unusual from the rest, like Trenton, NJ or something. Now sometimes when that happens, the bots rear they silly little heads and that piece will jump to the top of the viewing pile. But generally, it increases numbers, might move you higher to a keyword search in various search engines, but otherwise, they don't amount to much. There's no eyes involved.

I've been having the same problem...it started just before Christmas and has gone on everyday since...if it's a bot and I'm pretty sure it is why has gone on so long!

Floyd I may owe you an apology. After reading about bots I find they are used for many many different reasons, chief among them to inflate views on Youtube, and now I am sure also for increasing views here, but the question becomes "for what purpose"? None of us here, I am assuming, and maybe I'm mistaken, has the know-how or any reason to use bots to increase traffic. So Floyd, i see now what you mean.

As I see what Louise and Joseph have been saying.

When they are in groups, they are in fact useless to us as selling artists, and nothing to pay any attention to, so thank you all. And further after reading I now know why the use of CAPTCHA has become so prevalent, as it stops bot behavior. I don't imagine this site could code a CAPTCHA for a view of a photo or a painting. Well I suppose it could but it woould probably prevent a lot of views from those interested in one's work, its an extra step.

Thanks again everyone

The one I find funniest is one from San Donato Milanese, Italy visiting my South Carolina Santa Train shot once a day every day it seems for the past month.

Dear Rich,

I don't know the answer for you, but a strange thing that I've experienced is whenever I upload a new image to my site a few hundred views from my front page suddenly disappear, and I don't know why. If one of the mods see this post, I'd love an answer to that one.

Rich Collins

I thought I was done with this but here's another oddity. I just Twittered about an image at 6:46am and got this

Statistics - View Recent
Viewed 3 Times - Last Visitor from Etna, NH on 01/14/2015 at 10:22 AM

So on the East coast it is 3 1/2 hours ahead?

Joseph maybe someone in Italy likes Santa Trains, hope they buy it.

I have the bots traffic when I first upload an image. I share to Facebook and twitter. The twitter account usually adds about 18 to twenty some views right off, after I upload.

Apart from that I believe some people do download my images.
Why I believe that is when a certain place looks at an image for 3 to 10 minutes then looks at another one around the same amount of time. And so on to the next. I think I might be famous in china for one called digital painting named, "Vibrance personified " it's been viewed mostly in china. And another that's popular in Russia apparently. Any publicity is good publicity in my book.

Joseph C Hinson

Larry;

It shouldn't take that long to download an image. Could jsut be someone with multiple windows open looking while doing something else. In the meantime, you could always do reverse Google images on those images. If they are downloading them, it should only be the web sized version, 900 pixels.

Rich Collins

Joseph, I hadn't seen that reverse image page, thanks. There's another one called Tin Eye http://www.tineye.com/

Edward Fielding

Rich, there has been a lot of conversation over the past five years of what works and how to market. You just have use the search. BTW - that probably me from Etna, NH although it all depends on what server things are routed through.

First step is to get few hundred images in your portfolio - all keyworded and with descriptions.

I am fairly new to the site and the immediate multiple visits from New York made me question. I wrote to Fine Art America to find out what was going on. Definitely bots with NYC, Beverly Hills, China...just to name a few. I asked if there was anything I could do, as I did not like the bots inflating my visitor stats. FAM told me there was nothing they could do about the bots. Bottom line: you can probably count on about 10% of your total visitors' count to be actual people. The other 90% to be lifeless bots.

Rich Collins

Edward, I will be adding more as time allows, recently retired, and as busy as can be, so adding images is happening, but I am not a prolific shooter. However there should be no reason I shouldn't, nor anyone shouldn't begin to market their images as they build their portfolios. But thanks for the advice, I take everything I get as something to consider.
________________________
SAA Goforth, good grief, 10% is a low figure. I would imagine those with great marketing skills and lots of extra time, would have many many more visits that I can achieve, and even then I should reduce by 90%? Wow that's pretty significant.

Ashley Goforth

All right, all right, all right. Let's say 20%. As I just started with the site, it was easy to see the immediate multiple visits from the bots and weed out the bots' visits from legitimate ones.

Rich Collins

Ok OK OK then, :) I wish you much success

Edward Fielding

Probably closer to 5%.

Quality of visitors counts also. Visits from other people trying to sell their own work counts a lot less than organic traffic pulled in from your blog or other marketing.

You can have thousands of lookers but it only takes one buyer to make a sale. You just have to find and attract buyers.

Rich Collins

Excellent point Edward,

Earlier in the discussion Lady Isabella, brought up the use of Google Analytics here. I have no idea how to utilize that here, and I'm pretty uneducated in it even for my blog at Google's blogger site. Would you be able to use that here? Or do you spend time with that? Seems to be unless one is spending money with Adwords one is only capable of getting really basic info.

Rich Collins

By the way, do I really have to keep clickiing on 'I want to follow this discussion' and 'Please notify me via email' every single time I reply or post? Or does this forum have the ability to remember clicking on these only once?

Edward Fielding

I don't bother with pouring over analytics. I concentrate on putting my work in context - surrounding it with meaningful text. I haven't spent any money on Google Ads.
