Je Suis Charlie

2 brainwashed numbskulls have raided the HQ of the French weekly press the "CHARLIE HEBDO
and killed 12 persons amongst whom were 5 cartoonists of renown in Europe.
Since the phrase "Je suis Charlie", or "I am Charlie" in support for this journal has become a Banner of respect for the murdered and for the liberty of expression.
Je suis Charlie.

Andy, For the past 24 hours or so I've been replying on two posts 7th January 2015 Paris by Guna Anderson and Lets have a talk about pictures with meaning by Bill Stephens and signing my name.

Bill Tomsa

I AM CHARLIE!

Taken some ribbing from members who didn't have the slightest idea what it was about and didn't get it. No hard feelings. With your new discussion I think they'll get it now. Thanks very much for starting it.

PS You might want to warn your readers if they reply to your post to make sure to keep it non political or religious.

Thanks Bill, this has nothing to do with religion or politics, but free expression which certain persons would like to forbid

I could not agree with you more, Andy. I've been trying to get that point across to several people and am quite exasperated. Didn't mean to imply that it is p/r... just wanted to warn you of some members who may try to get this discussion banded because it is in their word "verboten".

I thought people were being douchebags by saying "Je suis Charlie" in a mocking way, like all those jokes they make about 9/11 etc. Thanks for clearing this up.

Glad that was cleared up for you and ,probably, many others. trouble with "social media" sometimes is that with a misplaced or misspelled word the meaning can be totally Misunderstood. Peace.

I used the above quote at both my parents funeral services and found comfort in it. Hope it can help others here.

A year after those extremists firebombed the offices of Charlie Hebdo in 2011 over a satirical cartoon about the Prophet Mohammed, Mr Stephane Charbonnier - editor and cartoonist of the satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France famously dismissed threats against his life, declaring: 'I would rather die standing than live kneeling'.

Je Suis Charlie
(In the memory of 12 people who were killed at the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France on Jan 7th 2015)

terrified by free press
and afraid of freedom of expression
fanatics always use violent censorship
trying
to
freeze our mind
shut our mouth up
break our pen down
and cut our hands off

they
relentlessly warn us
they would hunt and gun us down
as
what
we’ve talked
they didn’t want to hear
what we’ve written they didn’t like to read
and what we’ve drawn they didn’t want to see

unlike psychopaths and madmen of copycats
killing the innocent randomly at the instant moment of their most unstable mental state
those spiritual extremists carefully plan
to target those who
neither share
the same
faith
nor
follow their religion
or have any opinions opposite to their extreme belief

well-organized
and widely supported by a network of religious and political radical groups
those well-trained, professional terrorists always intend
to make most casualties and damages
and create a great fear factor
for the general
public

regardless
their threats
you officially defied
'I would rather die standing than live kneeling.'

we
people
around the world
are now raising your torch onto the sky
and chanting aloud “Je Suis Charlie”
to celebrate your lives and your sacrifice
for freedom of expression
and free press

“Je Suis Charlie”

Note: on Jan 7, 2015, those radicals killed 12 people in the offices of the Charlie Hebdo. They immediately went to Mr. Charbonnier and killed him, his police bodyguard, three other renowned cartoonists who had regularly satirised Islam, and the newspaper's deputy chief editor.

l am 110% behind one of the most fundamental rights underpinning democracy

Freedom of Speech!

I stand with Charlie Hebdo and its like shoulder to shoulder.

But l and a lot like me feel that FoS must be wielded with great responsibility. FoS will only become a standard for dissimulating hate-speech as satire, satire being used to prettify a savage indifference. We must not allow ourselves to be blinded to the great responsibilities which Freedom of Speech entails. If we communicate thru satire that our great democratic values have at their core such entrenched and alienating ideas (hate-speech masquerading as satire) then we cannot be surprised at the most savage of responses, can we? I think perhaps Charlie Hebdo prided itself to use Freedom of Speech quite irresponsibly. This does not mean l support the killers and RIP the many killed; l was not so surprised, sadly, that things turned out the way they did.

Freedom of Speech is a great responsibility; use it with caution.

At the moment there is incredible demonstration in Paris. It is also life translated in the Netherlands. I am proud I am European, pity we show how united we are only in such situations.

And FoS is not only the freedom to speak, it is also freedom to make own choice to listen, read, to draw. Don't like it, don't read it, don't listen it, don't draw it, but don't tell how others should live or kill them because they don't agree with your life style.

I know that the atrocities committed in France truly should cause everyone, worldwide to stand up for our rights as a human race. We were all born into this world with a free will and when an evil dictatorship raises its ugly head and tries to intimidate us into conforming to what they deem as correct, we should stand up and take note. My fathers family is from France and I have relatives in Paris so this is truly heart wretching for me.

Freedom of Speech is one thing and that's fine and dandy. The problem is tolerance of those freedoms. Most here don't even respect opinions. Even so-called United countries who go around spying on each other. So the next you are flipped off on the freeway- Remember You Are Charlie!

For anyone who doubts the seriousness of this situation, I say get your passport updated and go live in North Korea for a year and try to do the art you want to do. Then come back (if you can) and give us a report on what you learned.

All but one publication in Denmark said they would continue their practices of editorializing terrorism. Only one publication said they would not in fear of retaliation. Does this mean that terrorist attacks are working?.That they are mightier than the pen? Does it mean that we will be bowing to the extremists? Are you afraid to take out your drawing instruments to fight terrorism?

The Forbidden Word

it’s
likely
on the rise everywhere
at every corner of this civilized world
even in many democratic countries in the West

it
has
been
imposed
in the name of a private institution
on the best interest of a nation
or on whatever
it suits to
govern

under
any systematic censorship
where the would-be accuse is always concluded as a violator
and immediately punished without being allowed to self-defend
everyone becomes too afraid to say something
that could be misinterpreted or be felt insulted
by those authorities with absolute power
as a serious violation
of endless rules
from a.b, c, d..
to w, x, y,
and z

when
freedom
of speech
is tightly chained
in such a tiny restricted cell
and becomes a forbidden word
how many of us could dare speak out truthfully any thoughts running in our minds?

There is no free speech if you only protect popular speech. Free speech begins with the freedom to think your own thoughts, and extends the principle to communications.
Once the terrorists (of any ilk) gain control, the next step is to control education, and access to ideas. The goal is to imprison you in their ideology.

I am not Charlie, but I strongly support the sentiment expressed in the symbolic statement.
