Help In Pricing Original Artwork!

I have some of my original artwork up for sale/display at a local Starbucks and also will be displaying 3 originals in a show this coming weekend at an art studio. I have put prices on them anywhere from $100-$250. I'm just not sure how much I SHOULD actually be charging though. Am I asking too much, too little?? I am a bit lost and lacking the knowledge as to how I should be setting a price on my "Original" artwork??

Background on me because I feel it is relevant to pricing: I started drawing and then painting a couple years ago and just recently in September was convinced to put my artwork out there to the public for sale by family & friends...hence joining FAA to try and sell in September. I took one art class at a community college for a semester 22 years ago and have no other classes under my belt so I guess you would call me a self taught artist? I am not an established artist by any means so certainly am not known by name. Mostly local supporters and their friends that happen to come across my stuff. My detailed drawings can take anywhere from 20-40 hours to create depending on how detailed I get. The watercolor, pen, pencil paintings can take anywhere from 30-40 hours. As I keep producing art I know I will get faster as I get more experienced. I have finished 2 commissioned pieces and right now I have 6 commissioned pieces that I have been asked to do?

Soooooo, with that background information! Any advice please, pretty please :)

The pencil drawings and paintings typically are 8x10 & 11x14's then they size up when matted & framed
11x14 watercolor, pen & pencil $250, 16x20 matted & framed?

8x10 watercolor, pen & pencil $200, 11x14 matted & framed?

8x10 pencil drawing, $120, matted & framed?

Julie I think your prices are fine. "Dare To Be Different" is great. Now "Heartache of a lost meal" should be a piece to show style, but not for coffee shop. It's has good technique' but a little too sad. Good luck JT

Thank you Jack :)
Good, so I'm not way off one way or the other!

"Heartache of a lost meal" is sad and actually one that will probably always be just a show style, I was just using that one as an example because actually most all my original pencil drawings have been sold or not for sale. I was trying to pick one of them from my images and that was the only one still available. If I ever do sell that one the proceeds are going to help with the young lady who took the picture and maybe sent to the orphanage. I have commissioned pencil drawings coming up and am trying to figure out what I should be charging and used that as an example.

Love love love your woodworking art! What a cool concept and would be so much fun! Love this piece..

Julie I think you are spot on for the sizes you have. Great work and best of luck in your sales.

Julie, Your work is just beautiful!

Your prices seem comparable to some I've seen around for unknown artists in my area. If anything, possibly a little low for the bird drawing. But definitely seems in the right range.

I'm curious how you went about getting your work displayed at Starbucks - great idea. How did you approach them? And, if you don't mind my nosiness, will they get a portion of the sale proceeds? Was that negotiable, or is it just a set policy they have?

Lovely work, and good luck with sales.

Thank you so much Cristolin! I had priced the birds lower because it is an 8x10 but maybe I should put another $20 on it?

As for the local starbucks, that was being in the right place at the right time. I was working out at a local fitness center talking to someone about my art and the person next to us happen to be listening. He told me his daughter was the manager at the local starbucks and she lets local artists put their artwork on a free wall. The wall happened to be open at the time so I contacted her and moved right in :) a free display for a couple months. They don't take responsibility for the art nor promoting or selling it, so there is no commission taken either. I had to leave my information on the wall for people to contact me if they were interested. I ended up selling 1 original and 1 print so far :)

Love your artwork Cristolin! This one is very nice!

Climb the pricing ladder. Set a price and sell one creation. After which, you sell a second creation at a higher price. Keep doing this. You're climbing the financial ladder. This practice will prove that your art is in demand regardless of the price.

You can price one item low and another higher. When the higher one is sold, you can price others accordingly.

Nice work Julie ! For this quality I would not go under $150 maybe $180 as minimum. $120 is definitely to low. For future works I think a bigger size would be very fine.

Nice work Julie and good luck on your show! I don't think your under pricing as your not well known. Once people get to know you then you can up on your price.

Thank you for the advice so very much all you! I feel the experience of other artists on here help to confirm or change some of my thinking, so always love to hear from you!

Thank you Monsieur Danl for the advice! I have sold originals already and have added a little to the prices as I have progressed but not that much. I have sold 2 pencil drawings for $150, a bigger one for $180, some 8x10 commissioned paintings for $150 (one customer gave me $200 because he liked it so much and felt it was worth it, what a $tip that was :))

Rudi, thank you so much! I think I will probably go a little higher on the pencil drawings. The one I showed here is an older one so thought maybe I shouldn't put as much on it but maybe I should? I actually sold the 11x14 "Best Friends Forever" for $180 a month ago but had that price on it because it was bigger than the 8x10's. I am going to start working on doing bigger art, nothing smaller than 11x14 as I feel people want them to be bigger?

Thank you Randy! Hopefully I will sell something :) It's always an emotional boost when a buyer takes something with a big smile on their face, it confirms the effort, time and energy I have invested into a piece! "As people get to know me"....one baby step at a time I tell myself ;)

Love all your photography & art! Everyone is so very good in so many different ways! Love the diversity of everyone on here which is a very good thing! Can you imagine if everyone did art the same way..how boring that would be!

Congrats on the Starbucks sales, Julie. That's actually pretty impressive - to sell a piece in a location where the clientele are not going in for the purpose of buying artwork. It means the piece really spoke to them when they saw it and they just had to have it!

Here's to continued success : )
