Not sure what this says about me, but I came to know him first because he sang the Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends" which was used as the opening for "The Wonder Years" in the late 80s. We're losing a lot of really good singers and musicians from the 60s and 70s lately.

The Righteous Brothers said it best in their song "Rock and Roll Heaven" in 1974.

"If you believe in forever
Then life is just a one-night stand
If there's a rock n' roll heaven
Well you know they've got a hell of a band."

The song referenced Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Jim Morrison, Jim Croce, and Bobby Darin.

Definitely a one of a kind singer and performer. RIP, Joe.

I like that Murray...hope it's where I get to go...but not just yet!

Saw that news. Had the opportunity to see him in concert in San Diego back in 1972. R.I.P. Joe.

"We're losing a lot of really good singers and musicians from the 60s and 70s lately."

That's because they're in their 60s and 70s. Not that old by today's standards, but it's ancient by rock and roll standards.

I am blown away that Joe made it to 70! Truly one of a kind -- R.I.P. Joe.

Me too Dan. I remember that he would show up at concerts so loaded that he could hardly perform. He liked his booze! He absolutely was one of a kind and I adored his music.

Considering the life style, it is amazing any of them are still alive.

But there sure was a bunch of talent that came out of the era.

Very sad news. Age 70 is way too young to pass these days. Loved his soulful voice and music.

May you be at peace, Joe.

Oh, how sad. His music is timeless.

Joe Cocker put so much passion into his singing. Truly his whole body and soul. He will live on forever in his music. The heavens have gained another incredible addition to the greatest band of all that exists in the next realm. He has attained the ultimate stage of Peace, Light and Love.

Talented man.

I met him once at a photo studio where I worked as an assistant. He was way too wasted that morning to sit for our portrait session, so we all sat down in the lounge area, waiting for him to sober up. That’s when he pulled out of his pocket this good size cigar, unusually wrapped in white paper. Embarrassed, his manager kindly told him not to smoke it. Turns out, it wasn't a cigar after all….

I heard/saw him in concert about 8 years ago. I was very impressed at how well he continued to perform. It's amazing how long many of these guys are lasting, considering all that they've been through. For the concert in heaven, you can expect J. S. Bach on synth, too.

I had front row seats for his concert at the Berkeley Community Theater in either '70 or '71. He was amazing! Always was and always will be one of my favorites.

'Not sure what this says about me, but I came to know him first because he sang the Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends" which was used as the opening for "The Wonder Years" in the late 80s...'

That was 'his' input in Woodstock Joseph.

I was a huge Joe Cocker fan in my younger years especially. Absolutely loved everything he did with Mad Dogs and Englishmen. I think the first time I saw him was on tv and I was enthralled. My mom walked into the room and was taken aback because of his facial contortions and writhing around. But she became a fan too and even bought his records. We went to see one of his shows in Montreal together, which was amazing. I was wearing my Cocker Power t-shirt for my school year picture at age 16...wore the hell out of that t-shirt! He really knew how to bring it.

It's a sad day. RIP, Joe.

I feel blessed, we got to hear him at woodstock 94. My husband was really lucky, he saw him at woodstock 69 and woodstock 94. So sad that he's gone. He sang with such soul.

Always saw Joe Cocker as the archetypal American, a living (now deceased RIP) legend. Just heard on the BBC World Service radio, a brief bio and interview with a contemporary of his, Tony Christie “Is this the way to Amarillo”, describing his from early life in 1960s Sheffield in the north of England, Cocker was quite a quiet and nice guy; Cocker performed the pubs and working men’s clubs as Vance Arnold and the Avengers, covering Ray Charles and Chuck Berry, whilst working as a gas fitter for the gas board. He got a record deal but his first releases were flops. Then he emerged as Joe Cocker! A generation before many of us, but his name and voice always make you stop and listen.. his music and words go deep – oh and he considered the gas career quite seriously! Well what a take off he had. Gas propelled! Lots of turbulence with drugs and alcohol and mental health. Colorado mountains became his peace. Quite a few genuinely deeply emotional tones in the media. Legend!

Here’s an extensive obituary in the Guardian.

I can't remember seeing him at Woodstock, but enjoyed him in the film...He Got By With A Little Help From His Friends...and gave joy to so many. R.I.P Joe.

I saw Cocker in Ames, IA in 72/73. It was in the field house and packed with many thousands of excited fans. We were in nose bleed seats and when the lights went down the venue was instantly lighted by thousands of kids sparking up doobies in unison. By the end of the concert you could barely see the stage for the cloud of smoke. Loved Cocker.

I think we need an "old hippy" thread for the young ones who cannot imagine that we were ever cool.
I have a all in my home of concert postesr....and only the ones we attended, back in the day....what a marvelous collection of music still well loved!

My big claim to fame is that my picture is in the Life Magazine, Woodstock edition. I was there, but can't remember if I saw Joe Cocker or not, just as he probably couldn't remember performing. Mad Dogs, indeed! Ha.
