What Is It About Santa Fe???

My wife and I were just in Santa Fe for a few days, and spent a lot of time walking around. As you all know Santa Fe is full of galleries, so I was really looking forward to checking out some photography in the galleries.

We did not specifically research galleries, but any time we came up on one I checked it out. We saw lots of wonderful galleries, but I did not see one with any photographs!!! I could not believe it. I am sure there are photography galleries there, but just walking around I did not see any. Is this some kind of "Photography is not Art" statement or did I just miss them?

Original art sells in Santa Fe, that's why there is not much photography. I've been there a few times and asked a few gallery owners that same question...they do not want to waste wall space on something they do not sell much of.

There is a fabulous photo gallery in Santa Fe - Verve Gallery of Photography.
Here is their web site:

Janine- ha - you are absolutely correct! Here is where those collectors should go.

David - I am glad I am not the only person who thought it was odd - I am sure you are correct, for some reason photos do not sell as well there.

Thanks Elena, I will check that place out next time.

Dave,

We were in Santa Fe many years ago and loved that town. I think the gallery that Elena mentioned was the one we visited, not right on the Town Square,if I remember right. Anyway, that gallery was the first time I saw some original Ansel Adams prints, for sale and were amazing in person!

Recently, November,we visited St. Augustine,Florida and a friend is in a gallery there and we visited his work in the gallery and I spoke to the owner/manager and out of the 20 or so artists, only one was a photographer, since "photography" doesn't sell!

St. Augustine reminds me of Santa Fe, back in the day and now is becoming way too busy and commercial.............

Rich,

I suppose with the proliferation of digital camera and technology this may be the way of the future in the high end galleries... Does not impact me because my images will never see the inside of one of those galleries!

!! Thank you so much Dave.
One of my most underappreciated pieces of work. & I don't understand, but then again I loved him so.

I recently submitted a few pieces to an Art show. They stated " Original Art only " for wall space. I was interested in supplying a Manipulated Photograph as it one of the town's landmarks.
Upon request of definition of " Original art " , I was told " Oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal... "

I was quite disappointed over that, but managed to sell an image here the next day that I correlate to that show..

Rule makers get to make the rules. It is up to the rest of us to figure out ways to make it work for us.
I venture to believe at Street fair's Photography sales far exceed original painting sales . It is always more enjoyable to go where people put out a warm welcome for you.

Janine-

I love that image. It has a great composition and mood - it seems like there is so much that wants to be said behind those eyes!

I suppose there is something to be said that darkroom photography requires as skill that must be applied each time the photo is printed - which is not the case for digital...

Take care

Santa Fe is the third largest art market in the world. Traditionally, fine art has had definitive parameters. I am betting that the galleries are driven by what their clientele consider one of a kind fine art. They will show what they can best sell.
