Its a little industrial switcher. Gas Mechanical locomotive - http://limalocomotiveworks.com/gas-mech_locos.html

Just guessing, but I think that is a small engine that delivers supplies to a maintenance crew and/or used to run up and down the tracks to inspect and clear as needed.

It looks like a Plymouth 25 tonner. These types of engines were normally used by industry to move cars around their facility without needing the railroad who served them to do it (and to charge them for the service.) Where was this taken? That would help narrowing it down a bit.

Nice find and work, JC.

Thank yall....

It is in fact a Plymouth as the grill says so.

Andalusia Alabama is where it is shot.

Get any interesting shots of the passenger car sitting in front of it? I'd love to find a place like that to get some shots.

It is more of a cargo car for a passenger train as it had no low windows. Couldn't get in it but shot a few from the side. The caboose was open and accessible.

"It is in fact a Plymouth as the grill says so. "

Now you tell us! Jeez! ;-)

The other one is probably a baggage or mail car.

I'm having trouble tracking down specific information on this one de to the computer I'm on now not letting me to those pages. Plymouth locomotives, as I recall, were not named, such as an Alco RS-1 or EMD SW1500. They were typically known by their weight. Early GE locomotives were as well. There's one railroad here in the Carolinas that still has one operating, but only to move other locomotives around their engine house.

As it says on the freight car it's a Railroad Express Agency car. REA was a pool organization that handled less then carload shipments, basically filling the niche that that UPS FedEx and DHL do now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_Express_Agency

Couple of little switchers I've come across. I had a lot of fun this summer around the Essex Steam Train in Connecticut. All kinds of rusting rolling stock hanging around waiting for restoration one day.

I've been wanting to get back up to North Carolina to see what progress has been made, but they're working on her so fast, I have a feeling by the time I get up there, she'll be under steam and heading back up to Roanoke!

There apparently used to be a steam engine down there at that depot. Did you see it by chance? Other shots show the Plymouth engine and baggage car you shot covered by kudzu, so someone apparently dug them out or the kudzu died enough to all but recede. Looks like there's a shortline railroad in the area that used to be owned by the Gulf & Ohio that owns four railroads here in the Carolinas now.

Thanks Joseph.

This lot is pretty overgrown in the summer. Why I waited till now to explore. There is a railroad museum of sorts there as well. Will look for the other stuff next tine I am there.

Edward, "The Old Workhorse" has to be one of the coolest photos you've ever taken. Excellent work.

Nice spot here in New Hampshire. A small section of track preserved with a couple of old cars and a train station. The rest is a rail trail for biking and snowmobiling.
