Professional Vs Non-professional

I'm curious as to how many full time professionals are on FAA as opposed to those who aren't. Does anyone happen to know?

Thanks

Define full time professional first.

Full time, but on these discussion boards you will find more full time artists. We
are what, 1% of the total membership of FAA?

Agree with Mary, I teach art and paint full time.

On FAA, don't know. Certainly , FAA has Collections of the famous artists, living and dead, many of whom are professional by earning money at Art !
Some professionals are dead now, but their Art appears here anyway.

On this forum.........don't know..........there are 'degrees' of 'professional' spoken of regularly, based on University or Life's Degrees...........I see you are a practicing musician and artist...........perhaps the word 'practicing' (to earn a living) is more apt...........but......it's contentious nomenclature.....I'm staying out of this !!

The question (imo) might be better stated as how many are earning a full time living doing this or part time income as opposed to asking how many are "Professional Vs Non-professional".

On facebook, I was mistaken for a 'professional' photographer i.e. regularly paid for my work.
OK, I set a high standard - a professional standard with my work - so its easy to see professional
quality being confused with paid-for work. A really good, paid-for professional got really friendly,
but oh my! the disappointment at realizing I was not a paid-for pro!!! ROFLMAO.

i do this full time and make my living at it, and i consider my work pro quality, so i guess yes here i am.

Full time artist.

David's estimate of 1% is probably true considering how many people have accounts, including the inactive ones.

Since I went off to college in 1971 I have done nothing but art in one form or another. Artist. But then many would want to decide what that means. If I had to pay bills by my paintings I would be living under a bridge and eating once a week.

I didn't even use the "P" word for two years here.... my definition is far stricter than most and only leads to disgustions as to who is a professional.

I can confidently say that most professionals who have their work on faa are not frequently the threads...they are working, full time at their craft. AND yes, the vast majority of all faa artists have never dropped by.

I went to university to become a professional artist. I earned two degrees. I have never earned my living any other way. I am all but retired and no longer need to earn a living from my art.
I am a professional artist.

I earn a living with my camera, not all of it is art based though.

Is there such a thing as a part time professional? I was told after entering in a recent showing and winning that I could no longer enter a showing under nonprofessional status? I haven't been at this for long and would not be able to quit my full time paying job...so I am definitely not a full time professional, although I would like to be :)

Except for the Social Security stipend I've been receiving for the last 15 years, all my other income from the last 40 years, comes from the fruits of my "artistic" endeavors.

Vivian, you crack me up so much!

I am a professional working with twenty something years in the painting world, but I sure don't look or act professional when I'm in the studio with paint everywhere including my hair and screaming at the phone to "get lost!". I have made a shocking amount of income with my art and have been in shock over not making a dime from my as you say professional work. Why? I do have a straight job now that is of zero interest in this forum, but I'm greedy enough to say that struggling with art pay every year is terrible since it involves quite the investment of materials, and extreme exhaustion in serving customers.

There is great news though, I put my health first these days, I'm positive, and happy. I'm creating more art than ever with about five hours per day on my days off in the studio painting, and three hours per night on the computer. I pay thirty dollars a month for my professional tools on the computer; they are the current tools that art students use in college and there is more than just software, because the computer, scanner, and camera are equally important even if you are a painter. College does help folks to understand the business for sure, but more importantly, I have a clear cut business model and I'm selling my work mostly in film production, and as merchandise in retail. I think being a professional is slightly over-rated. I prefer to be happily educated in the arts and doing what I love to do in my free time.

How about you, Debb; are you considered a professional in your business?

Counting my advanced degrees in cloths-lint-removal mechanics and cat-litter tectonics, I am a poorfessional jack (ass?) of all trades.
