Audio Help Please!!!

So I came upon this version of Crazy by Gnarles Barkley that I had never heard before and once again realized how horrible my computers speakers are. Ya just can't crank it up...so I thought there must be a way to hook external speakers to it. Can anyone please tell me what I need to get great sound out of the computer? I keep looking at the big speakers sitting right next to the computer but can't see a way to bypass the receiver and those components. Do I need special speakers just for a computer and if I do are they any good?

You can plug headphones or any external computer speakers with a standard stereo "mini plug" into your computer's headphone jack.

Val - some speakers have an amplifier built in, particularly those intended for computers. For those, you just plug them in. If there is not built in amplification, you need an amp. Look on the back of the computer for a jack (1/8" stereo) and try to just plug in the good ones.

Reading deeper into your question, does your receiver have any input jacks on the front? If so, what do they look like?

James and Greg thank you so much! Head phones....I never thought of that!

James the only input on the front of the receiver say headphones but there are a bunch in the back but they look to be bigger than a 1/8'...I'm just guessing at that but not real small.

Val...

Look at your soundcard inputs/outputs at the back of your computer. There should be one labeled "line out". It will probably be the same type of input like on your headphones.... on the back of your receiver look for a pair of inputs usually labeled "aux" input. So... you will need a cable long enough to reach from the back of your computer to the back of your receiver... on end [ the computer end ] will the small single jack like on your headphones... the other end will be a pair of "RCA" jacks... google that to see what they look like.

Available in stores like Frys and Best buy on on-line at amazon.

Fairly cheap, but Logitech or Creative 2-1 (two treble speakers and one bass woofer) which I'm pretty sure are designed to plug into the headphone socket. They're not crazy loud, but the sound quality is good even at max (little distortion)

Thanks so much Bob and Mark! I think I can do this...wires are definitely not my thing... always expect something to blow up...but you've made it sound easy. going on a wire hunt!

Val, Bob had pretty good instructions, but a couple things may need clarification. First, on most computers, the headphone jack doubles as the "line out" jack, so that's what you'll probably plug into to get the sound out to your receiver.

On the back of your receiver you'll need to fine a free "aux" or audio input. These will be RCA jacks, and for audio they come in pairs. There's a red one (right channel) and a white one.(left channel). On older receivers they may not be color coded, but labeled R and L instead. Make sure it's an input and not an output. (NOTE: there may be a third yellow input which is for video, you can ignore it in this case.)

You'll need a cable with a stereo mini plug on one end and two RCA plugs, one red and one white, on the other end. Here's what they look like. http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-3-5mm-Auxiliary-Cable-Cord/dp/B0042DIZTE/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1418973108&sr=8-19&keywords=stereo+rca+to+stereo+mini+plug+cable They're pretty common and you can find them in the electronics department of any big box store or Radio Shack, and even drug stores.

Then just plug the mini plug into your computer's headphone jack, and the red and white RCA plugs into your receiver, set your receiver to the appropriate input and you're set.

Thank you so much. Last night I raided my sons room for what I needed and found probably everything I need. Speakers are everywhere and wires running all over the place...The hardest part now will be untangling the mess and figuring out what goes with what. He did have good sound in there so I'm thinking I will too...once I find the time to sort out all the tangles.

LOL, Val! I spent 12 years as an audio/visual technician in a conference facility, and you reminded me of the tangle of cables we had to take up after every big event.

I have USB headphones. Could use a Bluetooth link
as well if u buy a small dongle, or something
which'll stream from your pad device to a smart
TV or whatever...

Val if you don't mind headphones you can get an amazing audio quality from a little piece of equipment ;) (and they are cheaper most of the time)

I recommend something from Sennheiser. I have been using them for years (Sennheiser HD 555). If you will need any help with choosing one, let me know I will be glad to help!
