Happy Chanukah

to all of my Jewish friends on faa.
As you light your candles each night for the next 8 days, I hope you realize that the brightest light shines within you.
There were miracles then; there are miracles today...bazman hazeh!

Chanukah Sameach Marlene and to all my other Jewish friends here on FAA. I have one more gift to wrap and 5 pounds of potatoes to grate and fry. lol My Granddaughter is making the sufganiyah. We are all going to look a bit more pudgy after tonight.

For those who are not Jewish, it is an ancient Jewish custom to eat fried/oily foods on Chanukah, since it is a Holiday that commemorates a miracle that occurred with oil.

Quita,
Cute. Tell her that Chanukah is a very minor holiday...not even mentioned in the Torah. It's certainly not in the same league as xmas, just the same month.

Quita Jean

I will tell her, Marlene ; ) we just had a discussion about that. We are off to the book store tomorrow to find a book on how others celebrate holidays that are different then ours . Great learning experience, while she is still interested in what I have to say. LOL

A little tidbit about light....Chanukah falls of the 25th day of the month of Kislev. The 25th word in the Torah is "or", meaning light. "Let there be light!"
Quite a message....

Sincere thanks to all who stopped by to offer good wishes. Rest assured that there are many Jewish artists who don't make their religion known but are receiving the greetings as well.

And Marlene, not a major holiday? I think celebrating and exchanging gifts for eight straight days is major! :)

My neighbours didn't place their Menorah in their
window this year...I must ask them why? I always
enjoyed to see a new lamp lit each day...

Happy Hannukah!

Marlene Burns

Kathy, to further explain, it's not about gifts.....at best, ours are meant to be small ones for the children. We were never meant to compete with xmas.
Chanukah acknowledges two miracles that occurred during one specific battle between a small band of Maccabeans who won against the Syrian army which was far larger...They were able to take back the great Temple, clean it and rededicate it and then use it to pray. Ultimately, the Temple was destroyed. This moment in history is very minor in light of the Jewish history.
If celebrated in the proper way, we simply acknowledge God's miracles. ;)

I hate to show my cultural ignorance but did we change the spelling of Chanukah this year?

Happy Chanukah, everyone. Wishing all peace and happiness.

Chanukah is a Hebrew word. It begins with a gutteral sound that the English language doesn't have, much less a letter equivalent.
'Ch' is much closer than an 'h'
In all reality, the only proper spelling of chanukah is in Hebrew letters. ;)
Thanks for asking!
