Welcome to FAA, Lysette!

Please disregard The Digital. He or she is a troll who is bitter for being banned from posting new threads.

I agree with David that your work shows promise. I do intricate line drawings, myself, so I was pleased when I expanded your images. Some things that I've noticed with my artwork that you might notice as well...

1. People don't always expand the image to see the details. For this reason, it's good to have a few pieces with brightly contrasting shapes. This gets their attention.
2. People want to know what the piece means and how you created it. I've received favorable comments on my more detailed descriptions, so I'm trying to do a better job of writing about my artwork.

I'm sorry you received such a rude reply (from The Digital) on your first post. This really is a friendly website.

Best,
Julia

You are banned for a while The Digital. You do not, ever, treat a new member with such rudeness. Actually, you treat none of our members in that way.

Go away and read the rules. Carefully.

I can only apologise Lysette. Please ignore.

Mike, we need no more comments about this matter. Please greet the new lady who must be feeling very unwelcome right now.

Well, now you'll get some reviews by people who are sympathetic to your request, no doubt.

Here is a post to connect you to what be your hardest, most honest critic: yourself!
In the link, Mike Savad gives some excellent tips for evaluation of your portfolio from a technical basis and a marketing basis, primarily.

Mike will find many flaws in a portfolio, but you can save yourself much of the trouble by reading that thread, and honestly critiquing your own work, and how it is presented. This is a good thing. I forget who said that they valued enemies as much as friends, because enemies searched all his work faithfully, reporting on every flaw! (Or words to that effect.) In other words, when requesting a critique, keep a thick skin, blow off what is not pertinent, and ponder what might be on target.

Your art is well photographed, without any major problems in the photography or scanning. Perhaps some post-processing in a photo editor like photoshop could correct the next issue below, somewhat.

I'm a photographer not a painter, and not a trained artist. I'm afraid that my worst comment is that your colors seem either muted, or overly intense, or somehow both at once!

Flowers are a VERY competitive field here on FAA. There are so many flowers here, that it virtually impossible for new art to show up on a FAA search results list for flowers. If your goal is sales, perhaps other subjects (with distinctive keywords associated with them) might be better sellers. Sometimes specific locations help sell art. Local landmarks, tagged with the names of the specific to general location might help. For example, if you visit a botanical gardens, and paint a subject from that location, add those tags to your image. This may be considered questionable tagging, but the name of the gardens, the neighborhood, town, and state of the location, and the common, variety name, and the scientific name of the plant are all important for generating sales. Make sure to include that info in the description of the art as well: search engines are generally beginning to ignore tags altogether, and rely on intelligent parsing of text to distinguish spam from real descriptive information. Your location tabs will be less spammy if you include in the background a bit of the "landscape" from the location, so that the location actually appears in the photograph.

Because I can not draw a straight line with a ruler ; ) I chose photography ; ) I really like this piece and due to Julie's post, I now know a little more about intricate line drawings! Thanks Julia ! love the colors and the pure calm that this piece brings to me. I think it would display well in a bedroom, foyer, hallway or just about anywhere. This is the one that really surprised me when I opened it. I love the details in the leaves. I've always liked blue and green, so this one is my favorite.

Welcome, Lysette! You have some lovely pieces that would look fantastic as combined sets. Pansies and Evening Glow were two of my favorites. :) In anticipation of someone purchasing one or more of your works, you'll want to make sure that all of your images are bright (well exposed) enough to print properly--you want any prints to reflect the deep colors and detail as they are in the originals. Always better to take care of that now before an order comes in! Best of luck to you here. :)

Lysette;

Welcome to FAA and to the forums. Most of us are nice and/or offer some really good advice. A few of the posters do both at the same time. My one piece of advice, which was not asked for, would be to look at the pricing of similiar artists here and decide if you need to raise yours. You can do this by finding said similiar artist and clicking on an image to "buy." When the prices come up on theright, click on "Show Price Details" by the price. The mark up by each artists on any size will show. Just subtract the $5 mark up by FAA. For example, your 30 inch prints show up as $14 which is very low. Keep in mind that I am a photographer, but my 8 inch prints start at $29. I've actually felt that art like yours should probably be more than photographs, but opinions do vary.

Welcome Lysette!
I like your somewhat minimalist approach as well as an almost monotone look to some of your subjects. I admire all hand painted / drawn art no matter the subject.

If you don't mind a constructive critique about your digital image files posted however:
...at first glance of your entire body of work posted to your profile, I noticed an issue commonly found with painters that may not have a full understanding of making
"digital representations" of their work.
Whether using a digital camera or a scanner device to create the file, you also need to have basic digital imaging knowledge and skills so that your posted image
matches the original as much as possible with a few exceptions. (as - in the case of intended alterations to improve on the original)

Just my opinion but...
I do not believe that you intend for the back round of some to be a shade of gray. I believe that you intend it to be white. This shade of gray can most often be caused
by the wrong "exposure" or "brightness" settings in your camera. But can be easily corrected with a basic fundamental skills set in a "photoshop" type program.
Remember that you want to present your original art as best that you can for your customers.

Artists that create with actual paint (not digital) need also to learn basic digital imaging techniques so that your work is represented here "honestly" / accurately.
I also see an unevenness of exposure or dark area to some in the upper right hand corner.

Your art is delicate and peaceful in its composition and not stressing or "challenging" to look at. I feel it may also be suitable for decorative applications
such as phone cases and the like. Pleasing patterns seem to be popular for phone cases as opposed to actual "scenes" - city, landscapes etc.

Mostly I wanted to help with the technical aspects of digitally capturing your originals so that you won't lose a sale over any optical issues such as - unintended spots, specs,
"dead pixles", uneven exposure, blurriness, poorly cropped with edges showing, your signature cut off, white balance issues ....etc.

Photography Prints

In the description of this one you mention - "a back round of yellow and white"
...this is an example I'm referring to about the white balance issue because to me the back round appears to be gray.

...so welcome, have fun and if you have any questions regarding the technical side of selling art online, you'll find no better group of artist on the net then here at FAA who are willing to take the time to listen and come up with solutions for you.

Good luck!
-Ken.

Hi Lysette I see you are in Hampshire, I am in Brighton though I also live in Italy. I only joined in September and have learnt so much, particularly in these discussions. It is worth spending time going back over older discussions as you pick up lots of hints and tips including on marketing. Every day I pick up something new! I think your work is beautiful and I love the delicacy of the designs.
