You might not have seen enough of Picasso's paintings. He is flexible. Some of Van Gogh's work makes me wonder and some I think are great. I think it depends on the mood of the artist. I paint or create work according to mood most times. It depends on how much I want to put into the work or how much trouble the idea gives me. I don't specialize. Not trying to line myself along with those greats just that I think we make a mistake when we try to pin an artist down particular categories and labels so that we can decide whether they are worth a penny or not.. Art is a very individual and personal thing when it comes to the actual artist. No labelling, just learning and growth.

These aren't lists of artists and non-artists. They are just lists of people whose work you like or don't like.
You can't call any of them stereotypes when they are the ones who created the characteristics you are claiming they are stereotypical of.
When they painted none of those stereotypes existed yet.
Also if you do your history homework you'll find that Van Gogh very much considered Cézanne an artist.
Personally I never thought much of Kandinsky, but I don't think the world will stop referring to him as a significant artist based on my opinion.
Now Leroy Neiman, there's a guy I'd gladly argue as more con-artist than artist! His greatest skill being the art of the sell.

Hiya guys,

This whole thread is a farce. After all he didn't even put me on his favorite artist list so you know it's a farce. :)

The one that van Gogh was famously friends with was Paul Gauguin. No matter what your opinion of Gauguin, everyone was jealousy of him because he spent his days on the beach with young Tahitian girls, and his nights . . . well . . .

Some artists that you mentioned have several mediums that they worked with, especially the printmaking mediums like lithography. Owning works like these Picasso lithographs are possible to see hanging in places other than museums and are still authentic works with the artists signature.

Your opinions on why they are not artists needs to be elaborated upon, because even if someone was "narcissist" like you say Rembrandt was, that doesn't necessarily take his artistic ability. And we all know Rembrandt Brown goes by "The Crying Man".

Rembrandt a narcisist - ha!

Think about it - the most interesting surface in the universe is the human face.

The cheapest, most readily available face to use as a model is your own in a mirror.

(though that's not to say he wasn't - just that his later self-portraits aren't the most flattering)

`Excellent answers to "The Ten" from Abbie and The Digital!

Here are my responses:

1) What is your native language? In other words: What language did you learn to speak as a youngster growing up in your parent's home?

High Zootopian English (aka: Netherlandish)

2) Do you have a High School diploma? Or, perhaps a GED?

Graduate of the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Marineland, Class of 1871

3) Have you ever had a steady, full-time, paying job?

I’ve been continuously & gainfully employed since the age of fourteen.

4) What is your (real) name?

Patrijk Anton-Piers ;-)

5) What irritates you most about other people, and how do you deal with it?

Those who lovingly embrace the greatest of all diseases, their own ignorance; I deal with it by striving to inspire a thirst for learning in all whom I encounter. “For herein is the evil of ignorance, that he who is neither good nor wise is nevertheless satisfied with himself: he has no desire for that of which he feels no want.” - Plato

6) What personal accomplishment of yours are you most proud of?

I’ve just begun work on a $15,000 commission to create a mixed media, 5-by-10 foot triptych for a famous neurosurgeon, the premise of which involves the interplay between two Amazon women and…an octopus and his garden in the shade. I classify it as 'octo-erotica.' ;-)

7) Tell me one thing about yourself you wouldn't want anyone else to know about.

I tear-up whenever I see an animal that's suffering from abuse.

8) If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

AQUAMAN! That’s me behind the mask.

9) If you were an animal, which one would you want to be?

An octopus, of course!

10) Tell me 10 ways to use a pencil other than writing.

a) drawing
b) painting (I paint with colored pencils)
c) two pencils make a good pair of drumsticks
d) fidgeting/finger-twirling
e) reset the clock in my Land Rover
f) tuck it behind my ear
g) my wife uses two pencils to secure her hair in a bun
h) chew on it
i) kindling
j) backscratcher

I am lucky to speak English
I graduated UCONN, and high school.
I have had a host of cubicles.
My nom? David M Bridburg
If I get irritated I need to study myself carefully. We all can get it wrong and see ourselves in others.
I love my extended family dearly, proud of that, but it is not so much my accomplishment.
I was drunk in my 20s instead of in love with a young lady.
A super hero? Not quite close, but a more developed creative.
being human is being an animal. Just some food for thought.
I dont use pencils. I have no list.

Abbie wrote, “What do you mean by People as your accomplishment?” (you beat me to it Abbie.)

And you, Digital, replied, “Couse im working for people”

Assuming that you meant the word, Cause (I suggest in this case the word 'because' would be much better.)

Given your answer makes no sense to me I would invite you to elaborate.

One other thing: If one is to be taken seriously when speaking regarding such a convoluted subject it would help if one used correct English. Here is a tip. There are many fine, and free, language translators on -line.

This one is very good.

I'll say this for Van Gogh. He broke new ground. As well, his work is pleasing to my eye.

When has this forum required a proof of qualification to post an opinion on Art??

Although I may disagree with much of The's* opinions, I can see why he might have them.

* Note: Although my full moniker is "Roger Swezey", I prefer the more friendly,"Roger"

...........Thus, a bit snarky, "The"

Walter i said people in general but i mean people who like my art :)

Lyzette.

The artist to whom you refer in your last post was born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, aka: Edgar Degas - not Edward Dega, whoever he is.

In this painting - 'The Art Critic,' a collaboration between my brother, artist Markus Pierson, and me - I created a portrait of Edgar Degas using one of his own paintings as a backdrop, which served as the background for the characters my brother and I painted into the foreground: One of his Coyotes as 'art critic' on the right, and my own 'mer-man about town' on the left. This piece was originally intended to make a statement about our opinion of art critics; unfortunately, a narrative was never written, but we both have nothing but contempt for those who practice art criticism as it is often only those who are definitely not artists that are least qualified to criticize those who truly are artists...much like youself, The Digital.

Art Prints

In our collaborative painting, 'The Art Critic,' my brother and I have each signed the piece using a 'moniker,' or logo, if you will, both of which can be seen in the lower margin.

Here is an illustration of the symbolic meaning behind the moniker I employ when signing my original works of art:

To The Digital: I enjoy your Self-Portrait that you uploaded above in this blog. Sitting by a computer, working with a keyboard, of course, is your tool as a digital artist. I wonder, however, looking at your self-portrait image, and assuming you have captured a good likeness, do people say you have changed much physically since your baby pictures and do you look like any family members?
