New Tag System?

Has anyone noticed the new tags? Go check your work and your tags :)

I did.... quite long. Harder for me to now immediately see my first 10 tags.
Must be a good thing though - I hope this spurs an increase in views from Google.

I'd prefer it just keep the tags instead of them looking like this --

smalltown train photographs
joe hinson photographs
joe the photog photographs
lc railway photographs
lancaster and chester railway photographs
smalltown train canvas prints
joe hinson canvas prints
joe the photog canvas prints
lc railway canvas prints
lancaster and chester railway canvas prints
smalltown train framed prints
joe hinson framed prints
joe the photog framed prints
lc railway framed prints
lancaster and chester railway framed prints
smalltown train iphone cases
joe hinson iphone cases
joe the photog iphone cases
lc railway iphone cases
lancaster and chester railway iphone cases

For example, I took the prices out of all of my iPhone cases because I hated doing Google image searches and finding my photographs looking like crap on cases because they were oriented the wrong way. Yet now they are putting my tags with merchandise I am not selling.

i never liked how that looked, and google doesn't like how that looks. and the iphone covers are back in there. i liked the plain list of words we had before. if we aren't ranking higher in google its due to lack of content. that's how they do it now. all the PODs were pushed toward the back. forums and blogs and such, are on top now.

@Janine Riley

They are all in the same order as they used to be, it looks like they have only added extra word to your main tag.

@Joseph C Hinson Photography

Yea but the extra exposure can't hurt right? >:D

I think it's a great idea, it would be even more lovely if the google could see them.

EDIT

@Mike Savad

Wait a second? This isn't new? I have never seen them like that before. I was editing the description of one of my work and when I saw the tags I was like "WTF just happened here..." lol

Carol C

I thought those tags were new! I didn't say anything in case they were always there :)

I know, just more information for the eye to take in.

this is what we had about 5-6 months ago. then he removed them and placed them on the product page. canvas had canvas pinned on them. the words were just words, easy to read, and weren't a mile and a half long. i think it makes it look cluttered. doesn't look streamlined like the rest of the page.

many complained that they didn't have or want to sell cell phones, and it was put on to help populate it in google. but its very confusing to come here expecting to see them, only not to get it at all.

I don't like it, way too much redundancy and it just looks messy. Put that stuff in the meta data instead of on the image page.

wASte of space, thanks but no thanks.

and, each 'product' tag is 'live' and takes the viewer OFF my page ! Just rotten, not fair........I work so hard to find tags for recognition and now my tags are exploited, and it's too lengthly.....advertising every faa/product, not mine.

GIVE US A BREAK !

Janine Riley

Ok... but wait. Hasn't everyone been complaining that sales just "dried up " a few months ago ?
It may be duplicate content - or maybe that is what we need to get back on track again.

Mike Savad

its also on the artist website. that's one of those things i'd like to be in control of. keep it neat. i don't know if there is a way to hide in the code.

looks awful on 'my' A W..................links off my page !...EDIT...........NOT....I'm mistaken/apologise.......

.......LOGGING OUT ! ...... am over-reacting.........too much change happening.......sigh.

It's not nearly as bad as it used to be. Remember when they were just a big text blob at the bottom of the screen? I really hated that. Anyway, yes they are ugly, even now, but if they help sales?...

Edward Fielding

Does that kind of keywording work any more? I thought that was the old school keywording. Google looks for context and user value. You can't fake your way to the top any more.

If other sites are coming up in the search its because they are adding content - artist profiles, artist interviews etc.

Christi Kraft

What do you mean, they take you off your AW page? Clicking on one of the tags for an image on your AW pulls up all the other images YOU have with that tag. If there are no more, then that's the only image you see. You don't see anyone else's work, just as you didn't before he added the print type to the keywords. They do not take you off your AW.

Mark Tisdale

On the main site, they lead to search pages - so it's a valid internal linking system - maybe to the extreme but I have to defer to Sean's wisdom on how well it works as far as SEO, etc. goes. Since it went away and now came back, I'm guessing that was an experiment and he's decided for whatever reason it needs to return.

I'm not sure what Vivian's precise point was but it is pointless on her AW to have those links because she doesn't offer phone cases. All those "blah blah iphone case" links on her work would lead her potential customer to empty searches.

I'm sure some of mine do too just because they lead to a keyword search for which I have no work where I've enabled any iPhone cases.

Mark

The worst thing is they do not work properly on AW. Here is an example.

For this image the first five tags have a word "photographs" in them
http://ben-and-raisa-gertsberg.artistwebsites.com/featured/seashells-spectacular-no-3-ben-and-raisa-gertsberg.html
and none of these bring any images when you click on them. Hope this gets fixed soon.

seashell photographs
seashell art photographs
seashell fine art photographs
seashell picture photographs
sea shell art photographs

Raisa - just a guess - but do you have those seashell images listed in more than one medium? I.e. When you uploaded them, did you choose digital art AND photographs?

In general, if you choose two mediums, you do not appear in a search when someone narrows the medium to only one category.

And yep, If I change the medium to Digital art, I see your work.

http://ben-and-raisa-gertsberg.artistwebsites.com/art/digital+art/seashell/all

Digital art is one category where it shows work that is listed in more than one medium. That happens on the main site as well. If you choose two mediums, you generally make your work invisible to anyone searching just one medium. Digital art is one exception.

okay... may need some tweaking. I am noticing that what comes up under ABC.. for Photograph is not the same as ABC.. Canvas prints.
Some are showing no other matching results.

EDIT - what's the deal again about which category they fall under. I know you can check off two - but officially they go under one category.
May need to re-edit again.

Nicole Whittaker

oh wow... I didn't notice that...

Gill Billington

I just noticed this, the list is now unbelievably long, I guess it has a purpose!

Mark, thank you for checking! Yes, these images are in two categories, Photography AND Digital Art, because they are both. Are you saying they should show up in both categories because one of these categories is Digital Art? I am not sure if that is what you meant by saying:

"Digital art is one category where it shows work that is listed in more than one medium. That happens on the main site as well. If you choose two mediums, you generally make your work invisible to anyone searching just one medium. Digital art is one exception."

We are always told that it's our job to bring our potential buyers to our AW here on FAA

As we all know the only way, anyone will ever find most artist's work here is to use their name as a tag.

So, in the great majority of cases, those who come to My AW here, know MY work and therefore are MY customers

It has become very apparent that FAA is doing everything to redirect MY customers to other member's work.

It was bad enough when the tags began to appear in clear type on the right, that with a simple click either by curiosity or mistake pulls MY customers off MY page, and dumps them onto all sorts of other member's work.

And now, bad enough as that is, as an extra tease, various media are now added to each tag, making My customers even more tempted to click.

I don't pay $30 yearly, so that My customers would be continually directed to buy other member's work instead of My stuff.

Correct, Roger. I don't sell iPhone cases.......remember that ?choice?......well, the tag is on my artwork pages, every one. Click the link, and
go here................

http://fineartamerica.com/art/all/huge+mural/iphone+cases

of course, nothing of mine there, nor should there be, but, lots of other artists iPhone cases.....one click and the visitor is gone !!!
And, of course, the link doesn't work..........copy/paste it into your browser folks, see other artists artwork from your own pages,, just a click away....................

Mark Tisdale

Raisa - Generally if you list work in two mediums, it won't appear anytime the shopper selects a single medium. I guess the idea is that if a customer wants photographs, they will only be shown work that is purely a photograph.

That's why your seashell work doesn't appear in a search for the medium photographs, because they are in two mediums.

Digital art is an exception where it will show work that is listed in two mediums.

I believe paintings are the same way to the best of my memory. If you select medium as "painting" and "digital art" - the only individual medium you'd appear in is a digital art search. So the same issue exists there.

The gist of it is if you want your work to appear in a search for photographs, list it as only a photograph. If you list it in two mediums, it will appear in a search where the customer doesn't select a preference for the medium but it will not appear if the customer selects a specific medium. Except digital art which is the odd man out. As I said, the main search functions this way, too and has as long as I've been here. It's just not as apparent as it is when you are only looking at your own work.

Mark
http://tisdaleart.com

PS. Raisa - this may illustrate it better than I am doing above. If I search for your account name here on FAA, the search shows all your work - 500+ images.

If I change the medium to photograph, I only see 33 images. I'm guessing a lot of your work is listed in both the digital art and photograph categories. A customer who selects just photograph, won't see much of your work whatever they search for. It's ultimately a matter of opinion whether this is a good or bad thing. I generally try to select just one medium, personally even if the work straddles mediums.

http://fineartamerica.com/art/photographs/ben+and+raisa+gertsberg/all as I see over 400 when I change the medium to digital art.

Shouldn't the Christmas season be off limits to experimentation? Jeez I had a couple days of great sales and then nothing. I hope its not related to recent changes.

The keywords were always like this. Its only a short while they werent. Seems to me that in the time they weren't people were complaining of a lack of sales. Perhaps its a good thing they are back now. May help. However, that aside, the keywords have always been like that

Janine Riley

Thank you mark Tisdale. I take so long to type - you answered my question before I asked : )

Going straight back to photographs. although I don't think people recognize them as such.

Crystal Wightman

I personally do not like photograph, canvas prints, iPhone cases etc.. after each keyword. I just like the keywords. Especially since I do not offer iPhone cases and have no plan too. I know, when a customer clicks on those keywords it will take them to whoever is selling iPhone cases. However, I don't think it's good for us, the artists.. if we are not selling a product, but due to the keyword, the customer thinks we are.

So many words, so much text just taking up more space then needed. Looks so cluttered.

Roger Swezey

Abbie,

Maybe you can help this befuddled Old Coot

As I remember, in the past, the keywords were printed in a hardly noticeable, very small light blue/gray font under the images on each and everyone AW pages.

Now, they are in a much larger font, prominently displayed on the right.

Am I right, or is my memory failing me?

.

Sell Art Online

'my' tag, black abstract canvas prints, when clicked doesn't go to my page it goes to the faa search page for that tag , with everybody else's 'black abstract canvas prints' for sale............back to square one -- we can't keep visitors if they are 'tempted' away..........

Mark, thank you for your clarification, I see what you mean. Like I said, most of our work is in both categories, will have to redo it now, I guess. Most people would search by subject matter though so should be able to find what they need. But having tags like they display now is really misleading because, if a cutomer clicks on "seashell photography" she will get zero images instead of 25 pieces of seashell art we have there.

Thanks again, Mark!

Raisa

God it must be so nice to have nothing to worry about in this world beyond how a website that you don't own functions.

Joseph C Hinson

Who says we have nothing else to worry about? But since this is the forum section for said website that we don't own functions, it seems somewhat logical to post our frustrations here.

Nikolyn McDonald

I just went to my AW and didn't sign in. Clicked on one of the tags and all it showed was other of my own images with that word in the tag. The only problem I could see is that it then locked me into a sort of mini gallery and the only way I could get back to my own home page was through browser back back back back . . . well, you get the idea. I think it's neat :)

Well, another sort of problem is that since it splits word groups and shows each word separately, barn owls came up as barn owls (fine), owls (fine) and barn (not so fine). BUT all the barns that came up were mine, so I'll take it :)

Looking back I see Christi Kraft said the same thing as I did.

Linda Brody

I only see my tags in groups with the words: photographs, or canvas prints, or framed prints, or iphone cases, or some pillows...after my long list of tags. I have been a member since last August.... Am I doing something wrong??? See example in artwork below.

Bradford Martin

Linda it looks like you didn't separate your tags with commas. So all those words are like on big phrase to the search. Just put in the commas and it will change.

Valerie Reeves

Aaaargh!!! The long tags are back! UGH. MUCH prefer the short ones.

Bradford, thanks... I did not know I was supposed to put in comas! Thanks.
