Hi Erma,
What memories you just brought back! My grandfather was a bomber pilot before I was born...I don't know if he was a hero then but later he was to me. A test pilot and director of flight operations, he would pick me up once a week when I was very young, to go for ice cream... or to visit a small local zoo...at least that was what we told my mother...sometimes we would do that...but sometimes we would go to his job. He would take me to the airfield and watch them test the jets. I still remember when he decided I was either big enough or more likely that I could keep a secret and would take me right up to the fence along the runway and watch those jets scream by. They mostly tested fighter jets and it was always a thrill to hear that boom when they broke the sound barrier...haven't heard that in many years. Someday, he said, he would teach me to fly them. Never happened...he died not many years after that.
I recognize your Tuskegee Airmen...I have heard many stories of them from my own father.
