My Lucky Day!

My husband and I just took a short trip to Chincoteage, VA recently and stopped on Assateague Island so I could get some bird shots. My camera equipment does pretty well, a Nikon D300 and a 70-200 mm 2.8 vr lens with a a 1.7 teleconverter or at least I thought it did... On Assateague island you see a wide vareity of birds but you also see a wide variety of of camera equipment ranging from a cell phone to a set up with a $10,000 lens! Well a nice man came over to where myself and some others were photographing an Ibis and all our jaws sort of dropped when we saw his 600 mm f4 lens Lol! I couldn't help myself and I blurted out" I have lens envy!" :-) He then asked, what my camera was and I told him a Nikon. Well his lens was a Nikon and he then said "would you like to try it?" Would I?!! Lol. I attached my camera very carefully to the lens, afraid to touch it for fear of breaking it and I was giddy when I saw the photos it took! I thanked him profusely and he told me "somebody did that for me once and it really opened my eyes". What a nice man! Maybe one day I'll be able to do that for somebody as well. :-) I asked him how much a lens like that runs and he said that they are around $10,000 but you can get a used one for just $7,000! I gotta start selling a lot more photos! Here's the photo I got from my brush with the big lenses. Sell Art Online

Lara,

I've shot with the Canon version and it's fun, but not a lens you'd want to lug around, ALL the time! And if you bought one, you would HAVE to take it everywhere! I think it's 17 lbs or so,don't really remember but I could hand hold it for about 3 shutter clicks and I have a few images on my site from that lens.

It's like driving a Ferrari, once and then going back to your Ford.

Great shot, Lara -- and a wonderful story. Like watching a Hallmark commercial, I got a bit misty-eyed. :-)

What a generous act sharing his lens. That sounds like a really exciting event Lara and the picture is grand!

Cool story, Lara! I get a kink in my neck just thinking about hauling a lens like that around though.

Impressive. Im following him on Flickr now!, I love wildlife shots. I am contemplating a interchangeable lens camera for that reason, Don't think I will be getting that lens though, lol! You would think that technology with all of its developments would come up with a way to telephoto images with a smaller scale lens and not have the clarity compromised,
I lucked out with this shot with a fixed lens camera, The bird was so close I didn't need a telephoto lens: I really enjoy photographing birds,

"He said he was an engineer and photography is just his hobby! :-)"

Which pretty much explains how he can afford a $10K lens, lol!

Thanks everyone :) @ Rich, yeah he did look a little hunched over when he walked away with his lens on his shoulder ;-). @ Judy, wow nice shot! I've never gotten a good shot of a night heron yet but it's on my list for sure!

That is a great experience, indeed!

I can't justify getting a lens like that but I can justify getting to Assateague Island National Seashore several times a year. I'm only 40 miles away. LOL

Here's a shot from my latest trip - with the same lens you have.

Lara,

One thing to remember before you mortgage your house, car and any kids of working ages, your camera doesn't have a full frame sensor, so what you saw through the lens, times the 1.5 sensor factor, was really what a 900 mm lens would produce!

So a much cheaper lens, with a 2x converter would get you into the same "ballpark".

As I mentioned above, I had access to the Canon version of this lens, for years and only probably used it 2-3 times and that was mostly just to play with it,

No worries Rich, I had no intention of mortgaging our house ;-) I took some bird shots today with my 70-200 2.8 lens with a 1.7 telecoverter today that I was pretty satisfied with since I used my flash and was pretty close to the birdies. It was probably a LOT easier to hand hold too!
