I'm using the (oddly named) iOS app called "ProCreate" to create digital paintings with layers. It works really well on my iPad, and I can export into PhotoShop for resizing and final adjustments.

Neat Julia! This looks great for the I-Pad. I downloaded the PDF and will be very interested in taking a look and in your gallery! Would be great for on the go and travel. Thanks for the update of this software.

Just so others reading this who may not be aware ProCreat software uses less megabites because the I-Pad has less memory than a regular laptop/computer so it is a painting program how sophisticated it is maybe Julia can fill us in. I haven't read the PDF yet.

Gimp is extremely flexible photos can be edited, manipulated, painted, on layers in sophisticated processes with many of Photoshop's attributes and some of it's own . Gimp has a vector graphics editor and is user friendly (skills can easily transfer to PS or other sophisticated software). There are lots of plug-ins for all kinds of actions. I have only skimmed the surface in my own work. I would like to help people use this software for it's flexibility and sophistication enabling artists to fulfill their potential.

Gimp files can be made into PDF, JPG, SVG (vector) and can be used in Adobe, making GIMP files easy to download into PS. The only file PS will not take is the GIMP layer .xcf file, GIMP will take the Photoshop layer file except the "smart image" won't work in GIMP like it does in Photoshop.

Just so you know Julia's work is no "flash in the pan" it is very creative and beautiful! Here is some of her work:

looks like procreate is only for ipads?

Suzanne Powers

Yes, Melissa. I don't have a Ipad as yet but it is something for the future and prices will go down, probably in five years everyone will have one.

Melissa,
Yes, ProCreate is for iPads (as far as tablets are concerned), but it looks like there is a desktop version available.

Thank you, Suzanne, for posting my work on this thread. I would like to note that Dragon Fly was done using ProCreate, while the other two (Awakening and Impact) were done on clay board using felt tip pen. I enjoy drawing on my iPad, but I also enjoy using traditional mediums. Both of the pieces below were done in ProCreate. I love the fact that I'm carrying around a complete art studio (water colors, oils, pastels, pens, crayons, pencils, and airbrush) in my iPad.

My husband purchased a refurbished iPad from Apple's website (at a greatly reduced price) over a year ago and he's had no problems with it. My next one will probably be a refurb. No reason to pay full price--not unless there's a MUST-have feature that's only available with the latest model.

Refurbished is the way to go, like you said Julia as long as it has every attribute you need. From what I can tell the factory just uses some recycled inner workings and everything else is new. I saved about half on my pen tablet.

From what I can assess the strength of Procreate is it efficiently uses the limited power of Ipad with applications and acts somewhat like a desktop paint program with speed of application and some flexibility. It seems all paint programs have their pluses and minuses, GIMP is usually listed with Photoshop and Corel and taken seriously.

Suzanne,

two or three years ago, I looked at GIMP because it was free. I had no background in digital image making at that time. I did
not understand a single thing about GIMP. PS has a better layout for learning is what I was told.

Love GIMP... the layers, layer masks, etc. Recently started to do more with blending different exposures of the same RAW file converted to TIFF and blending them using layers in GIMP. I have used GIMP in some shape or form for almost every file I have up here on FAA. If I don't happen to use GIMP I use a free Nikon program to edit the RAW files, Photoscape, and a few others that are pretty handy for Tiff and JPG.

I need to upgrade my laptop though because it is too old and slow for the larger files. 5 years old is too old for what I need to do now with some of my photographs.

I use GIMP for virtually everything. For digital drawing working in layers is a must as it is so easy to work on individual elements of the piece without 'disturbing' the rest of the image. I use layers so often I would be lost without the facility.

Thanks everyone for giving the benefits of GIMP or whatever program you like to use. I've been using GIMP for about a year and a half, I have been very happy and continually amazed with it.

David,

The GIMP layout can be like the PS layout now you just have to download that particular one. GIMP is actually more intuitive and easier to use. Do you use PS?

Luke,

Good to hear you are increasing in your use of GIMP photo editing, I'm heading in that direction, want to do more with my photos than just use textures on top.

Barbara,

I just started painting so I'm glad you find GIMP easy and beneficial in your painting. I have been wondering what technique is used to work on a larger image, working on just parts of the image makes sense and is easier.

Suzanne,

I use PS. I have PS CC for $10/month. That of course adds up to $1200/decade. Adobe knows how to make money.

Remember I was looking around 3 years ago. GIMP probably has radically changed. At that time it
was so poorly organized the intuition and learning curve were ugly.

I like having the tutorials for PS on the internet ie YouTube videos.

I was trying to use the Lynda courses, but found they never seemed to apply directly to what
I needed to learn.

I do next to no photo editing. Not actual RAW etc.....I use solely digital images in sRGB generally.
