Point & Shoot Under $120

Do any decent ones exist?
My brother has a gift card for Amazon, so he's perusing the camera selection there - but is kinda lost beyond just reading reviews. He's not a photographer, just looking for a decent camera and not to waste his money on complete garbage.

Any sort of direction to narrow the field would be helpful. I'm only familiar with DSLRs, so not very helpful.

Sony is always reliable, no matter the cost............

$120 makes it kind of skimpy in the choices. A Nikon coolpix is not a bad choice - a little pocket camera - but needs about $50 more dollars. http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=Nikon%20Coolpix&adid=22222222220208269232&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=b&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=35374796136&wl4=&veh=sem

did you say you have a $40 point and shoot? get 3 of those.

beyond that i don't know, i stay away from reviews whenever i can. start with DPreview and see what the top cameras are.

As Roy says, if he could add a bit too it he'd have a lot more choice. Alternatively perhaps go for an older model on offer (e.g., Canon PowerShot, etc). It depends on what he wants (for example is a decent optical zoom more important than video recording, etc?) Use the search options on amazon to narrow the choices a bit.

I think my $40 one was a nikon coolpix from eons ago... I think I left it in London.
I should have put it on display at shows to prove it's not the camera that really created my best seller.

I think you can get a Panasonic Lumix under that price range. I had a Panasonic point & shoot, and I'd recommend it.

This one is even waterproof. It's listed on their site at $134, but I know you can get it cheaper.

Patricia - he was actually looking at that one ... good call

Since he'll be using it mostly for food photos I think his best bet is this Samsung WB350F... has manual control so he can shoot wide open. If he decides he want to shoot underwater every so often he might go with the Lumix.

We purchased this one for our granddaughter for some $80 about a month ago, it's a bit more now but still under $120

I have a Samsung DV150F. Great point and shoot camera. Has many features and the photos come out great. Dual screens. One on the front. One on the back. Lasts for a good length of time on new battery.

It works good in the cold too without having to adjust to temps too much.

I have a secret weapon in a Samsung ST30, which was the tiniest camera with optical zoom when it came out about 3-4 years ago. It's great for travelling ultra-light, just in case something remarkable jumps into view. Nikon seem to have bought the technology and rebranded it as an S01/S02 which I don't know anything about except it's probably much the same.

Pros: available new online for 50 bucks, 10 megapixel, 3200 ISO, comprehensive colour adjustments and scene controls, super small and light (80 grams), 28mm equivalent zoom.

Cons: No optical image stabilising so bumps the ISO automatically, also the sensor is iphone sized so a bit spotty in low light

But: run the spotty photos through Neat Image or similar, and no spots!

Tell him to try best buy now. they usually have some really good point and shoots on clearance because of to many manual functions. People that buy those dont want too many controls to figure out, so good ones are being discontinued. I worked as a Canon rep last year, and seen this at Christmas time.

Narrow depth of field is tougher to obtain on mirror less camera because the lens is closer to the sensor. Cell phone doesn't cut it? If its for food blogging I'd think he'd want one with WiFi capabilities.

Go Sony if you can afford it. They have the best sensor technology in small cameras.

For the price, I would recommend the Canon S110. Its a great little camera, I have two, and bought both of them on sales for under $150, one of them was $99. List is I think $199.

Really the 200-250 range is where they start building nice cameras and not cheap stuff.

Its no secret that Sony excels in compact cameras, Some of them in your price range have the Zeiss lens, an important consideration!

Heather, how did you get the pic of the camera in the thread with out uploading if through your gallery?

I have a pic of an sample of an idea of how some one interested may make a few bucks. But I don't want to upload the pic into my gallery.

Thanks for the input everyone - he ended up going with the Samsung, and I'll give him some pointers on how to use it in manual mode to get the most out of it. He's currently waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

Agree 100% about Sony cameras - I have an RX100 II and tbh I think the sensor easily outperforms my Nikon D5100. I still mostly use my D5100 due to the variety of lenses though.

Anyway, that Samsung looks like a fun camera. Hope he enjoys it!

Tell him to go to the B&H website there the reviews are mixed between pro and amateur. He will get a pretty good idea.
