First Attempt At A Portrait

I'm a semi-realistic/realistic digital artist and have been drawing for a year and half now. This is my first attempt at a human portrait. she's an actress who played Lana on Smallville. Two versions one in color with shadows for added dynamics, and a sepia version. Any preferences? They are not for sale because I don't have permission to use her likeness for my profit, but I still use it as representational work in a not for sale gallery. Please feel free to share your first portrait and maybe your latest one to see how you have improved.

If I could self critique this piece it would be to change the hair, but the photo I used as a reference looked pretty much just like this, it was probably wet or loaded with some type of gel product.

Have started to draw, this sketch is my first portrait. I thought I wasn't interested in drawing people, I'm glad my focus seems to be widening.

John,

My image is on topic. Adding contrasts to an image digitally the first time is really tough.
This image's underlying work failed. I then grayscaled it to add contrast and added the cyan hue.

Luckily it popped.

I struggled to educate myself on technique for just over 5 weeks. I worked day and night
on thinking through the processes and learning PS techniques.

PS does not generally have a natural enough affect.

John, I like the one with shadows best.

I don't really want to post my first portrait even if I could find it :-) Let's just say I've improved quite a bit since then. Here's the last one I did besides my self portrait that's my avatar. This is one of my nephew's little girls.

John, I think I've already given you my opinions in the raw critique group a while back on this one. It still bothers me that the sides of her nose aren't symmetrical but maybe that's how her face is. I know most human faces aren't perfectly symmetrical.

Nice work, John, as always. I agree, I like the one with the shadows the best. They add a lot of interest.

I don't have a picture of my first portrait anymore, but here's my first digital portrait...

Didn't really know what it was going to be when I started out, but I just got my first Wacom tablet and wanted to try it out.

And here's one of my latest ones...

I gave up on tablets. This was all mouse.

I paint portrait professionally as a side job. I painted my first portrait over 30 years ago, so I doubt I still have that one. I don't show my portrait work mainly because I don't want to be know for it, but I do quite a few.

I can't show my customers work so here are a few of more popular fun ones:

John,

Your top Shadows image is warmer. I think everyone here, most, like it better.

The bottom sepia image can be worked with. You can do a rose sepia version. In
other words warm it up.

I made a second image out of my first rose because it was so much work in the first place.
