Starting to become an outdated term. Visual Arts is probably a more modern term. Just "arts" is too broad since it would include things like dance, music etc.

"Starting to become an outdated term."

Not at all. Fine Art has always meant imaginative, aesthetic or intellectual excellence requiring great skill or accomplishment. It is, above all, art for arts sake.

If one limits their art news and views to just this forum then yes, the term seems outdated because Fine Art is no longer the focus here.

Fine art: Creative art, esp. visual art, whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content. (from Google)

Visual art: Art forms that create works that are primarily visual in nature. (from Wikipedia)

A prevalent opinion is that all fine art is visual art, but that all visual art is not necessarily fine art. One common point of view is that the original motivation for making the artwork is what distinguishes visual art from fine art. Visual art encompasses everything that is visual, is extraordinarily wide in scope, and includes everything from a Monet oil painting to commercial concept sketches made for an animated movie. Many people see fine art as being generally devoted to artworks that are made purely for the sake of themselves.

what is art in general?

i don't think there will be one solid answer that everyone will agree on. art can be anything anyone likes enough and is usually just more aesthetic than the surroundings its currently in. or it's a status someone puts on it. fine art is more refined than that, your making art for the purpose of it looking nice.

for example, everyone's favorite - street photography

point a camera at dude holding a box and we can call it art. while others call it snap shot. however take that guy and place him in a setting where he's casting an interesting shadow and the light is being utilized in a way that makes it far more than just a snap shot of a dude and a box and we can call that fine art. i think its going out of your way to make it look like more than just a common thing.

a flower on a table might be a snap shot

a flower in a vase by a window is art

a flower in a vase, with a love note attached, the lighting dark in spots with a streak of light just casting a highlight outline around the petals, and maybe the other light is a silhouette of a person in a door just coming home, and seeing it there on that table - that would be fine art. because it went beyond just placing a thing on a table.

Fine art is just any art that is created as art. Just about anything can be defined as a 'work of art', but many things that end up being considered as 'fine art' were originally produced for a specific purpose other than the art itself... maybe for a communications role. At the end of the day it is an impossible definition though; trust me, I studied visual communications, illustration, design, film, photography, and I'm a 'fine artist' too... its possible to justify anything as anything after a few pints at the bar.
