Apple Sharing Function

I have a IMAC and one of the features I am enjoying within IPHOTO is the ability to add accounts such as FLickr/Facebook and easily and readily share a photo to that site and add it to the album,
I had uploaded a picture to my Flickr site ..It was a favorite pic and got a lot of comments, In the meantime in IPHOTo I took that photo and edited it creating a banner that I had intended to use as the header for my FAA artist website, I was browsing through my Flickr stream and came across that image and it now appears as it did when I revised it as a banner, I ended up deleting the photo in Flickr, I have contacted apple and they don't know why it is happening, Does anyone know how I can circumvent this from happening in the future, I suppose I could duplicate the image and revise it that way / but I was hoping there might be a better fix...

Judy, I don't edit in iPhoto (I use Photoshop Elements) and I'm not sure what you are asking but I presume you had a single image which you altered. You can keep this altered image and obtain a copy of the original image by Control-clicking the image and in the drop down menu click Duplicate. Then Control-click this duplicate image and in the same drop down menu click Revert to Original at the bottom. You could put that on your Flickr site again!!

When editing images that are in iPhoto you can either make one or more duplicates first to work on, or later use the Revert to Original making sure to do it on a duplicate if you wish to keep the image you have edited.

Hi Margaret.. Yes I started duplicating them I was surprised that a change made on iPhoto would alter a image I shared to flicker too! I have the original image.. Not sure I will post it again.. I really like iPhoto.. I realize it is limited . but so user friendly..i was holding off on getting software till Apple announces what their plans are for Aperture.. I tested it in the Apple store and liked it.. I may go ahead with Photoshop elements.. I just got a terabyte external drive (passport).. Thank you for your input. You are always so helpful!

not only will it change, but if you delete from iphoto, they will also delete from flickr..

Wow Debbie good to know! I am wondering if that is true if you don't use that "share" option..I added Flickr as an internet account option and as a result I can share photos direct from my library to flickr,,which is what I am now doing,,,I wonder if I stop using that function and just upload a photo from my album if the same will be true, I realize I can duplicate photos to avoid this but it generates more images and is a step I would just as soon not have to take,

PS Did you know that iPhoto is now able to work with raw formats . Previously you had to use aperture or other more sophisticated programs. You need to install the update if you want to use the function, I am still evaluating getting photo shop elements but may wait just a little longer to see what is happening with the apple developments,

If you upload from your pictures file, they will not be removed from flickr. On the other hand, I had uploaded many pics to flickr one day, and I went to search for something and they were all gone. Make sure to have an external hard drive with all backed up before getting rid of anything. I have photo shop elements, but I dislike the backup option for them. I Also like some of the editing in preview, for simple edits.. I did see the raw option in iphoto also.. I haven't tried it yet.

I just bought "passport" HD for Mac external drive. I was torn whether to buy it or just hook up the internal Time Machine to the macintosh HD, ....and to the iCloud. I read the reviews and one review indicated that the external drive worked for 6 months and then just quit working. I may disconnect it and only connect and backup once a week or after I have added new photos,, I don't have that much going on on my mac that would warrant constant backups the way it does now, Any suggestions?

I only plug mine in for back up. You can right click to add folders for files and name them just like in iphoto, then drag images to it, otherwise you will get a never ending run of images, without any way of searching. I have 3 externals and have had no problem at all. Time machine is fine if you want a continual backup for your system, but when it gets full it starts deleting the earlier data to make room.

I added folders already and have added some old photos to it, I have my time machine hooked up to the external drive, Not sure if I should or not, I guess the best approach is just to unplug it and backup weekly or monthly, I just discovered something else when I opened up passport, Its called wd utilities/security,
Basically it allows you to drag/folders and extras .. what the heck is that about, Do you know? I wonder if I missed an important step when I installed the drive of some function that I am not utilizing,

Judy, I also have an iMac. Used to use iPhoto but don't much anymore. However, when you plan to alter a photo in any way even cropping it, it often is a good idea to make a duplicate or copy and transform it, thus your original stays just as it is. Not every photo needs changing so you do not need to duplicate them all. If you have plenty of memory in your iMac, then you can easily have the added photos. Good Luck!

I don't recall doing that on mine. I have dragged folders, but they don't stay in a folder.. they upload as individual pieces, not as the folder. Mary, good advice!

Mary I started doing just that/duplicating,,,over time I lose sight of which is the original,..I have so many different versions of an original photo that I completely lose sight of the original, Some are edited in iPhoto, some have been transferred to Flickr and edited and I have Pixlr, Its becoming difficult keeping up with things. A case of "ADD" for sure, I should have stayed with my original setup.,, storing my photos on the memory card on my sony,,,those images are original/unedited,,,but it became difficult to transfer images over to iMac.iphoto because my reader had to read through all of my photos in order for me to select the ones that i wanted to transfer over (that had not been transferred before). Now I delete the photos on the memory card on sony after I transfer them to iPhoto,...This whole photography thing is new to me,..I had been focused on camera settings/and all of the other intricacies associated thereof, Now I am hoping I can get really organized ...I think I just answered my own question, Maybe I should just transfer all of the camera images into another file (the original unedited ones) and make a copy of them to I photo,,,That way I can always know that I have the original version if I want to start over....is that plausible?
