Esa Rosetta Mission Congratulations

Well it looks like the ESA Rosetta Mission Lander Philae has done all the people concerned proud, even though there may be a few glitches. No doubt we will see a vast array of artwork in the coming months relating to the same events.

Something to carry you through the night while we wait for more information on the ESA Rosetta Mission lander.

Such a cool story. Been listening to it all day

Michael,

I'm amazed we've not heard more about this on the news! The science that got us to be able to get there, after 10 years and then land, at that speed,is amazing! Now if only they found the Ebola virus.................

It is amazing Rich - to actually find a rock, at just 2 miles across, in this huge universe, and land on it moving at 30, 000 mph and come down at 2mph... there was concern it might have not gripped on fully and there was an emergency meeting last night...

Yep ebola has been known about for decades and outbreaks always fizzled out... the WHO should be given money to fund research into cures for deadly diseases that could become epidemics becasue no one funds research unless there is a market..its one of the flaws of capitalism (although the system generally works well, another example is the environemnt where capitalism does not generate concern or action and needs government intervention).

There are other viruses out there, and also there is the fact that other animals such as pigs and dogs may also harbour the virus and not show symptoms... And fruit bats (the endogenous host) occur in many countries around the world.. A global solution only comes from coordinated action on a global scale.. Basically plagues happen and do wipe out half of humanitty every milenia or so... We know what happened in medieval Europe. Frightening, but disaster planning just in case is always prudent. As is staying rational and acting. Like we are doing. So when our troops and drs and nurses go out there, they are heroes and should be treated as heroes, but the quarantine is essential as although the risks are calculated as small, one infected person on an underground could infect 1000s. So we should applaud and support the health workers and soldiers because they are saving humanity. And educate. And prayer with humility is actually a good thing.

edit: actually the comet is travelling at 83000 mph! Also the probe bounced twice, first time a whole km up taking 2 hrs to come down, then bouncing again..

I have been quietly celebrating the fortitude of scientists everywhere, alot of the work must be very ponderous, even tedious, but the results of long term thinking are out of scale. This is huge and we should be much prouder of them than is apparent. On alighter note have you seen this from #xkcd comics? Watch it all, its wonderful! http://www.tanyaharrisonofmars.com/philae.gif

Yea, this is very cool!

And #xkcd rocks! I used to read it every day but haven't had the time lately.

Well it looks as though the lander is sending back data, and has planted a thermometer, but they still need to try and get it into a better position for recharging through the solar panels. It is quite amazing really and no wonder it bounced half a mile back up in the air, it only has an equivalent weight of four ping pong balls with the comets gravity being so weak.

Anne, nice animated story of the events, lets hope there will be more to add!.

In the next hour or so, they are going to try and make the Rosetta comet lander hop out of it's present location to get more sunlight for it's solar panels in the hope of extending the mission. Keep your fingers crossed everyone!.

I hope they are successful in getting it relocated to charge the batteries. I'm looking forward to the data it will provide.
