We usually get only 10 or 12 inches of snow for an entire season, here in Asheville,
North Carolina. But here it is Nov. 1 and at 5:40 am we already have a couple inches of the white stuff. Post your pics here of the first snow of the winter wherever you are. More than 1,000 miles north of here, in Maine, it is rain, not snow. Go figure.

John, I have a friend what lives in Franklin - just down the road - they said snow as well. Thank goodness my trip up through your area was a week ago. Although it's 44º F here in "sunny" Florida this morning and in the 30's scheduled for the next two mornings with high's in the 60's - you can keep your snow. I gave up on snow about 58 years ago - the first time I saw the stuff - it's "pretty" when fresh and pristine - and doesn't have to be shoveled nor driven through when it gets slushy.
Here is a photo from April 2013 -

John, I was just over on Weather.com, watching video about early snow. I envy you the experience, but how will snow impact your construction timeline?

The construction pauses each weekend - the snow will be long gone before Monday. Everything is still on schedule for completion before Thanksgiving.
The snow is fun to see, but never lasts down here.

I'm currently staying in the Columbia River Gorge. It's been raining for two weeks. A couple of days ago, we got a break in the rain so I decided to go to a lake I heard about near Mt. Adams. The lake is at around 4000 ft. elevation. I was a bit surprised to have to drive through some snow to get there and walk through some to shoot the lake.
I hope to be out of here and on to the coast before the first snow falls at river level. :)

John, I forgot about melting snow. I grew up in Wisconsin, where it always seemed like once it began to fall, it was just there . . . until Spring. ;-)

I was considering going up to the Bryson City/Dillsboro area tomorrow, John. I'm guessing the roads are slushy?

Last winter, Birmingham had the biggest snow storm it had had in a very long time... one of its biggest in history! So, when we saw that it was snowing, we went into a little town called, Old Town Helena, and of course I brought my camera along. Along the walk, I spotted this bench, rapidly getting heavier laden with snow. I knew I had to capture it. So I bent down and tried several angles before I got this shot.

It snowed here in Michigan yesterday but not a couple inches. A little stuck on the ground but it melted. I never would have guessed NC would have more snow then we do! You can have it.

Shelby,
When we lived in north Shelby county just outside of B'ham we loved it when it snowed! The kids had a day or two off from school, made snowmen, threw snowballs; it didn't last long but they had a blast. Good to know ya'll are still getting snow around there ... ;)

Joseph - the Great Smoky Mountains National Park got 16 inches in some places. Bryson City might be a little iffy tomorrow but the main roads should be clear enough - just some of the back roads might still be snowy. By Monday afternoon, this should be almost all gone already with highs back in the 60s.

Can't even fathom snow....we're trying to get out of the 90's here....we only shovel sunshine.

I'm in JC, TN and drove over to Greeneville for a show early this morning - snow was coming down and had an inch or so in Jonesborough/Greeneville.... roads totally clear since it was melting when it hit the pavement.
By the time I got out of the show this evening there was no sign of any snow and we were left with just rain.
Joseph - Going through the mountains will probably be different - likely sticking to the roads there. If you can I'd give it another day or two to clear up. Its very cloudy/foggy so won't see far.

John, NJ has had a lot of rain all day...cold damp and miserable... but no snow! I'm not a fan of the stuff...it's beautiful but the parking and the moving of it stinks! Getting up at 5am to move it off the car stinks and then coming home to find not a parking space to be had....also stinks! I hope the only bit of it I see this year is all your beautiful photographs!!!
Marlene I want to move to Arizona! Yuck snow! Last year was horrible! It's just rain now but it's already cold and damp...the house is closed up and the heat is on and I'm gonna be cold until May! Tomorrow I think I will do all the weather stripping on the windows and get ready for what is to come...winter...yuck! How something could be so beautiful and be so horrible all at the same time amazes me!

i hope our winter is dry, but it probably won't be. right now all we have is big cold winds. good inside day. long term forecast (the not at all accurate 2 months ahead), shows freezing stuff near thanksgiving, that just ruffles my feathers.
right now the window is closed, and i can hear the wind through double pane glass. hope we keep the power.

I don't want to hear snow near Thanksgiving! How about just one good snow in March and that be the end of it. I'm not liking it at all this year...my bedroom ceiling collapsed this summer ( a final hurrah of Sandy) and took out all my winter clothes. Had to toss it all... fiberglass insulation and moldy wet stuff everywhere. Didn't harm my work clothes so I'm just going to work and hibernate in my sons sweat clothes...lol wait till he finds out I raided his closet while he's away!

Val,
Tucson has a spectacular winter/ spring... Usually marked by the first snowfall somewhere else

Marlene it might be cheaper to move to Tucson than to replace all my clothes! I used to think I would miss seeing the seasons change... but year round nice weather does sound pretty good! I know once you adjust to the colder temps it's not so bad but I'm not adjusted yet and I am freezing! I learned from experience that when the heat first kicks on you have the tendency to keep increasing the temp till your house is a balmy 85 and then you never will get adjusted...so 68 in here now.

on the plus side there were no hurricanes. i don't know if that means next year there will be a revenge session to make up for it. i remember last year in december we had a 75f day, then a terrible winter to follow. i just checked the long long term, and to be honest they can say anything - its not like it even has to be accurate. but it looks like a nor easter for around that time, because they keep going back and forth from cold to warm. as long as we don't get an ice storm until all the trees lost the leaves.

no power, the close the state, you have to figure out how to open your door. windows don't open at all. all the bushes are parted down the middle, when you go out to beat the ice off the branches to prevent it from staying that way (they don't pop back if you wait longer than a day), you have to watch for falling branches. if you can walk any where, you have to watch for the partly fallen branches. nope, ice storms aren't fun. luckily when we do get it, it's like an 1/8" accretion. other places get far more. my sidewalks still have white lines from the devices i used to break up the ice.
i have to remember to add on an extra drain spout. last year it dammed up and flooded the porch. we had like 2" of ice. sand does not add friction btw. large salt tablets worked well though. thing is, it's large and clumsy and a tripping hazard. so i should keep it ready.
