I only recently started watching Modern Family. Besides being a very funny and well-written show, I love looking at the art. There's a pomegranate painting in Phil and Claire's home that I love and another in Gloria and Jay's entryway of legs in red pants. They also have a very abstracted painting of a koi pond in their kitchen. It's all very bright and very 'me' which is why I like it.
I was wondering if anyone else notices the art on other shows. Below is a link to one of the paintings I love from the Modern Family set.. It's actually inspired my next two paintings. Stay tuned...

I sure do notice, Karyn -- all the Modern Family homes are filled with art, even in the kid's bedrooms. I really like the random photo collage above Haley's bed. (It's probably gone, now that she's taken residence in the basement.)
My favorite on-set art for the last several years, is the huge staircase print behind Rick Castle's desk, on ABC's 'Castle'. I sometimes 'pause' my playback of the show to stare at it. :-) See it here - http://castletv.net/castle-staircase-poster-now-available/
For obvious reasons, I especially like that it's a print, not a painting. :-)

I have noticed "pixelated art" in shows where they obviously did not have rights to show a piece of art that was caught in their scene. I think the example that I saw was in a real estate reality show where they sell high end condos in NY City.

Yes, I do. I love the art on Modern Family and sometimes on other shows I see familiar art that is from FAA.

My goal is to have a piece of work on the wall of some random crime scene in "Criminal Minds." Maybe a series of train photos. Rossi can make a comment, "He sure loved trains." Then Reed can tell him how a lot of teenage boys with autism love trains.
Better still is if the victim is actually a middle aged man living in his mother's basement.

I look for art on TV all the time. I see a lot of black and white photography on dramas. Especially when they want to show hip, modern, lawyers and political types. Comedies seem to have more bright colorful art. Typically the art doesn't stand out too much but becomes part of the background.

Unless it's scripted as being a certain way, we generally use rental art on our sets. Its easy, relatively inexpensive and we know that the work is cleared for use for perpetuity.
I recommend getting into some rental houses if you're interested in being seen on TV/movies.
I could list some Vancouver and LA houses if anyone's interested, but I don't know any from other cities.
(One of my works was in the pilot of Criminal Minds - called Quantico when it was filmed here. I don't know if it made the final cut, but the cheque cleared! :D )

I get Elle Décor magazine. You can check out the rich and famous interiors. The magazine shows a lot of art on the walls. It's great to see what art looks like in a great living space. Color is always in.

I'm always looking for good interior design magazines. Thanks for the recommendation, Jack Thompson :)

Karyn, funny that you mentioned Modern Family....I like the ones you've mentioned but that red one is Cam and Mitchell's house is AWFUL! lol

It's so funny, I think we all notice the kind of art we like to create.
Lesley, do you mean rentals for staging purposes? That could be a new way for me to think about marketing my art. Would you sell a piece directly to a stager and then that person would recoup their investment by renting it out, or do you rent directly to a home owner?
I would love to see my art on a set. I think it could provide a strong pop of color!

@Karyn. My local artist guild rents art for selling condos and houses (which I do partake in), but here I'm talking strictly about movie/TV usage.
The main art rental house we use on the show I'm on right now (I really should be working) is Aion art. ( http://www.aionart.com/ ). They've been renting to our industry for years and know what we want. And what we want is CLEARED ART. Presigned releases on everything they have available so a designer or director doesn't look at something, say, "OMG, I *love* that!" then we can't get the proper paperwork signed.
This is not a good way to get your name out, though. You will get no name recognition, no credit, no fame at all from being seen on TV shows/movies. Just a giggle - and your Mom will know! :D

There are two giant bags of candy, the good stuff, sitting on my kitchen counter and it's taking all my willpower not to open them! Is anyone old enough to remember trick or treating before the 'fun' size candy bar? Those were the good old days!

There's art on TV?

I like CBS Sunday Morning. They have that Sun Mandela which changes to reflect each story segment. I always like to see what each Artist comes up with. I did see one on FAA a while back that they had used. The show has a main focus on Art and music. It is about the only thing I watch anyway, as a Sunday Morning ritual.

Art ? What art ? Will be looking for the art in the TV shows now... Never considered it since I am the type of gal that can't draw a straight line with a ruler. One of the main reasons why I love photography. Because I can say "i" created that!

I don't follow the program, but I recently sold and licensed to a popular CBS TV show NCIS New Orleans. I've had some TV exposure before, Connecticut network news and a few times on what I would term local cable TV. The first airing of the art showing is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 11. They licensed the print to be used as a "prominent prop". The artwork is titled "Pride" and it so happens the characters last name is Pride.
I hope Im able to spot it ! The art director for CBS told me it should be clearly visible in 3 episodes. The print size they licensed is 18" at the widest dimension. Sadly FAA was unable to meet the clients needs and have it their the following morning on set. Fortunately I have a vendor network that will gladly walk on water for their professional clients. I added 2 more to my list at the Photoplus Expo held at the Javits Convention center this weekend.

I do not watch very much TV, but the art in Modern Family is very visible compared to most shows. There is some cool retro art in the offices of Mad Men, and an old show I used to watch Boston Legals, had some interesting retro style abstracts also.

Once your art is on a movie set, you don't usually get to claim it as your art. Yes, of course I love the art in movies and TV series...I especially love it when it's my art, but I love other artist's work as well!

I really like this dimensional collage of photographs from Rachel's office, on USA's 'Suits'. They've swapped them around a few times, tweaking the layout, but it's a great look.

I like it so much, I'll be helping a local buyer put something similar for his own workspace. He's a great procrastinator, so who knows when we'll actually do this, but I'm looking forward to it!
Suits is another show using a lot of art to illustrate it's characters.
