Doing My Own Domain Name?

Is it really this easy?

1.) Go to godaddy.com, pick one out
2.) If it's available, pick it
3.) Check out
4.) Plus it into the box on the AW side?

And that's it?

Joseph,

I dont know what hosting service is cheaper for domain registration currently,
but I would shop Blue Host.

I would never use Go Daddy for web hosting.

Also buying three years at a time or more is slightly cheaper.

You can transfer domain names to new hosting services. But not
always. There can be ins and outs to it.

You might want to know more about web hosting services and
website building programs. There are many threads here on FAA you can
search. Since I have not gone through the process I am not all that expert
yet.

My son recomended Hover.com. It was slightly more expensive than Go Daddy, but after reading about Go Daddy, i would stay away from them. And Hover has a tutorial for working with square space. Now that I own my name, I have absolutely no ides how to use it. I have to dig up all your tutorials, Abbie. I don't even know where to start. I know how to upload....that's the extent of my internet knowledge.

JC you will probably get a notice to renew. We get them at work when the domain there is about to expire....just make sure it's the right service, i get spam notices too.

It is in the artistwebsite thread now or on http://1stangel.co.uk/fineartamerica

What are the godaddy issues? I've always used them and their customer support has always been very good.

Some of their products like website builder are a bit weak and their integration between products is cumbersome. But very reliable. However none of these issues would be relevant in just purchasing a domain name.

Mary, what a beautiful new avatar! I didn't recognize you at first, lol. Your recommendation of hover.com looks quite simple, and it's cheaper than godaddy!

Abbie...I bought my name on FXDomains. I'm trying to follow your tutorial, but I haven't even been able to find the area to edit the DNS settings. Help!! (Please!) :-)

Never mind, Abbie...I found it in the "Help" area @ FXDomains under "To Register Your Own Domain Hosts." I followed your tutorial from there!! Thank you for posting it! :-)

Shucks, Joe, wish I had known ... I have a referral coupon code for 1and1,com ... get a .com for a buck for the first year. I left Godaddy for them and haven't turned back ...

If I find the code I'll post it back in this box. Then you can choose it along with FXDomains.

Here you go: http://www.1and1.com/?kwk=207128042 [ Since I pasted it after my first post it's not a hot link, so copy and paste ]

"What are the godaddy issues?"

Too big. Too cumbersome. Too expensive. Too many screens and clicks to do the simplest things. Before being bought out, their renewals were $7. Now renewals are $15. No thanks.

Dan is right, one of my main issues were that you had to search for a coupon code, usually at Fat Wallet, to get the same price as 1and1 who has better service.

I'm confused. I am searching for a domain name, and tried FXdomains to help in the search. I typed in marilynwilson.com and FXdomains said it is available. But I typed the same thing into google and marilynwilson.com took me to another Marilyn Wilson's site, DreamProperties.com (she is a realtor). So ... does this mean that FXdomains is wrong and it is already taken? I am confused...

Abbie Shores

No, it means dream properties is taken BY Marilyn Wilson :)

JC your sites registrar URL: http://www.wildwestdomains.com

They should know

Wild West Domains is a reseller company of GoDaddy. They are reliable. If you want to sell domains under your own name (or brand) you can set that up through WWD. That's just another option.

It's interesting that, as I read these various domain topics and see recommendations for one company over another, that some of them are actually a subset of a larger company (a reseller, if you like).

GoDaddy may be a bit more expensive but you can actually talk to a real person if you need help with something. Maybe that's why they they cost a bit more. :)

I am not promoting GoDaddy but I do have a few names there (about 10). I have a couple hundred with a company called eNom and a few dozen with Moniker. In 15 years of Internet Marketing I have only ever had domain problems with Register and 1&1. YNNV.

I typed in marilynwilson.com and nothing comes up specifically for it, I do see the dreamproperties.

Thanks, Abbie and Melissa. I went for marilyn-wilson.com because when I checked again (tried to type my name in without the hyphen, into FX) it said it was taken. Because I am technologically challenged, I had my teenage son set things up for me, through the one he goes through (ifastnet). Now we wait for it all to take effect. :)

Bill Swartwout

MarilynWilson.com (without the hyphen) is, indeed, owned by a Marilyn Wilson of Dream Properties. She originally registered it 14 years ago. Marilyn-Wilson.com appears to be still available for registration (as of 11:00 PM Eastern). It looks like ifastnet is a reseller for eNom. That is a good thing because eNom is a large, reliable company.
