The Plight Of The Eclectic Artist

Friday night is Date Night in our household. When it's my turn to choose the restaurant I search high and low to find something different. I like to try new foods, visit new places, see different people. When it comes to my art I feel the same way. Abstracts, figurative, graphic, photography, realism. That's all well and good and I have a great time being creative but I always wonder what is the best way to organize an eclectic gallery? I don't think my artwork page has a cohesive feel. It just seems really random.

My current strategy is to put a little of everything on page 1 to let people see everything I do and perhaps pique their curiosity enough to keep them browsing but maybe you have a better idea.

How can I avoid appearing to be a 'jack of all trades, master of none' kind of artist?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I find in my own eclecticism that I try to build a pattern or find that thread that might tie them all together with the
idea people will get to know that

I went through all my art and created a sort of color story and I think it flows better.

There you go. You could repeat that color story and have that be your artist signature. Your red bowl and chopsticks is compelling

Thanks L.

I don't know about you but I always find the first few minutes of reading a new book a bit awkward until I become familiar with the writer's rhythm and style. I usually know if I'm going to enjoy a book in the first 10 pages. I think we have an equally brief amount of time with visitors to our sites. By creating a visual element which links one image to the next I think I stand a better chance of holding someone's attention just a little bit longer.

Thanks again for the suggestion!

Hi, Karyn,

I've learned not to spend too much time tweaking my Image tab -- I like the ever-shifting feel of it. But I do go through the first few pages, every so often, to be sure that nothing stands alone. Small clusters (or large ones, if I've recently posted a series) work well -- a grouping of abstracts, a trio of kaleidoscopes, a few fractals, a clump of photographic art pieces. I guess I go for the Buddy System. :-) I've been thinking about alternating -- Images one week, Galleries the next -- for my opening page. That idea is still in Mulling Stage.

BTW, your current Images page is gorgeous -- wonderfully cohesive without being matchy-matchy. The spikes of red on that page are everything!

(You won't be surprised to hear that I consider 'matchy-matchy' to be a silent killer . . . just like routine.)

Karyn, You have one chance to make a first impression and the average viewer won't go past page one.
You've wsiely defaulted to galleries and I think it looks great....Don't worry about variety..your style is the glue. ;)
BTW, I wrote this message as soon as you posted the other day on my phone.....who knows where it landed! lol

Thanks, Wendy and Marlene,
I tried to respond to your message and one from Janine last night and it wouldn't take, but thank you both for the encouraging messages.

Organizing my image gallery is like cleaning out the pantry. One day you open the door and you know you have to do something!

Have a great day all!

Thanks for posting this question. I'm eclectic too and have wondered about the organization of my work. :)

Karyn - it all looks wonderfully cohesive. Your bold use of signature color in your style is the thread that weaves in & out.

Perhaps adding a still life gallery too.

Maybe even color theme galleries.

I like your idea, Jani. Is there a downside to having many galleries?

Janine, you are some kind of a pretty woman even in your "get up" and face paint!, I should be jealous!
