This is something I need to get better at. I think instead saying social media is a waste of time, learning how to do it right by seeing what has worked for others might be the way to go.

Well that guy sure isn't an authority! He had two full page, condescending popups before reaching the post and one annoying slide-in at the end of the (poorly written) article which was selling his SEO services and affiliates at every turn. Clicking Home produced yet another full page popup. Clicking it off crashed my browser.

Pure, unadulterated hucksterism.

Hi John, Good topic I have been wondering about that too. I made a bunch of social media sites but now what? How to actually use them as a marketing tool...no clue. On twitter what do you tweet...I made a new painting...who cares? Sometimes I re tweet stuff, I think I did one of yours that I liked...but who sees it? It seems to be a science in and of itself.

The people who made the conscious decision to follow you.

John - that is a nice article .. however it is trite with information that is a repeat of what others say.

They guy I think that takes it up a notch and does before he talks is sales guru Jeffery Gitomer. My business has turned in the right direction like never before because I follow his free advice like sales gospel. I suggest everyone reading this sign up for his free weekly newsletter and then give it time to soak in http://www.gitomer.com/sales-magazine/Sales-Caffeine.html

Val -- to answer your question about what to tweet, I posted this article in the "Artists and Photographers on Pixels.com" group on LinkedIn:

What should I tweet, what should I post, how should I link?

Hey Val. It is hard to step away and realize people DO want to see and know what creatives are doing. Cooking shows have lots of viewers. Who wants to see something cooked? musicians have LOTS of followers. I read Andy Warhols diaries. Checking to see what I was doing when he was doing! Somebody somewhere wants to KNOW. Especially if they cannot do the thing you do.

@ Joseph, Thank you...I guess that does make sense :)

@ Frank, Thank you, I'll read it...tomorrow, nothing more will soak in tonight!

@ lamthebetty, That really gives me something to think about, thank you...I've mostly felt like I've been talking to myself out there :)

John thank you for starting this discussion, I can't be the only clueless one here!

Thanks John for the post.
Interesting article, like Dan I found all the popups annoying and took me a while before I could get to the article - not a web site I would want to keep going back to.
I'm not sure I agree email lists, speaking personally I get inundated with emails from companies I have dealt with in the past and every morning I go through 80-90% of my messages and just mark them as read and delete without opening any of them - I must get around to un-subscribing from them one day.
I'm not good at twitter, like Val never really sure what to put or if any of it gets read, but then I'm equally guilty because I very rarely read other peoples tweets so perhaps I should participate more.
One suggestion I read on another thread that I agree with, I think it's better to concentrate on a couple of social media sites rather than spread the same amount of time over a larger number of sites
