Finding Twitter Hashtags

As I'm figuring out Twitter one thing sort of eludes me: how to come up with hashtags that might actually get found. Let's say I want to tweet a photo with a fairly specific subject, one that I'm sure is generating some interest. But a hashtag has to be an exact match to a search. How do I find out what hashtag(s) people are actually using, and looking for? I can try searching on a few possibilities, looking for ones that are found in a lot of recent tweets. But that's just trial-and-error and if I don't guess right I waste my time.

It seems like there should be a Twitter function - or maybe a 3rd party site or app - where one could enter some likely tags and be shown current statistics for those tags AND for similar/related tags you might not have thought of.

the search will break the image up into usable words. i just mention #truck #mechanic #RedTruck #PieceOFJunk or something like that. part of it is just noticing it.

Mike - not quite following that. "break up the image into usable words" - did you mean "text" and not "image"?

David - I just did a photo of the new stadium under construction here in Minneapolis and wanted to promote it. I'd seen a lot of usages of #vikingsstadium and thought I might use it too. But hashtags.org showed zero usages of #vikingsstadium, and no related tags. So, nice try but no cigar for hashtags.org in this instance.

One way to tell is to do a search on the words and see if it is popular. One thing I am finding is don't bother with plurals. Another is that general words bring in more views. For the Vikings Staduim I would that #Vikings would get you good views.

when you do a search, twitter will break up the tags into search words. #pictureOFtheDay will show up just as it's read. when you do a search, do it normally without a hashtag.

use twitter to do the search. you'll see it will correct it to the right spelling.
its just that you can't have spaces in a hashtag
