From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders.
He is bolted to earth.
But man has only to sink beneath the surface
and he is free."

— Jacques Yves Cousteau, Oceanographer

With every drop of water you drink,
every breath you take,
you're connected to the sea.
No matter where on Earth you live."

The sea is everything.
It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe.
Its breath is pure and healthy.
It is an immense desert,
where man is never lonely,
for he feels life stirring on all sides."

— Jules Verne, Science Fiction Writer

The sea is emotion incarnate.
It loves, hates, and weeps.
It defies all attempts to capture it with words and rejects all shackles.
No matter what you say about it, there is always that which you can’t."

— Christopher Paolini, Author

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself,
except that when you finally see what goes on underwater,
you realize that you’ve been missing the whole point of the ocean
. Staying on the surface all the time
is like going to the circus
and staring at the outside of the tent. "

— Dave Barry, Writer

Ocean is more ancient than the mountains,
and freighted with the memories
and the dreams
.................. of Time."

— H. P. Lovecraft, Science Fiction Writer

unless he has the courage
to lose sight of the shore."

— Andre Gide, Writer

"I have always been fascinated by the ocean,
to dip a limb beneath its surface
and know that I’m touching eternity,
that it goes on forever
until it begins here again."

— Lauren DeStefano, Writer

What would an ocean be
without a monster lurking in the dark?
It would be like sleep without dreams."

— Werner Herzog, Film Maker

Why do we love the sea?
It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think."

— Robert Henri, Artist

And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have,
in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean,
and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears.
We are tied to the ocean.
And when we go back to the sea,
whether it is to sail or to watch it
we are going back from whence we came. "

— President John F. Kennedy

"The man who has experienced shipwreck
shudders even at a calm sea."

— Ovid, Poet

The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous
and the storm terrible,
but they have never found these dangers
sufficient reason
for remaining ashore."

— Vincent Van Gogh, Painter

Twenty years from now,
you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do
than those you did.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from safe harbor.
Catch the wind in your sails.
Explore.
Dream.
Discover."

— Mark Twain, Great American Writer

is in very grave danger."

There is nothing like lying flat on your back on the deck,
alone except for the helmsman aft at the wheel,
silence except for the lapping of the sea against the side of the ship.
At that time you can be equal to Ulysses and brother to him."

“We need the tonic of wildness..
.At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things,
we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable,
that land and sea be indefinitely wild,
unsurveyed and unfathomed by us
because unfathomable... We can never have enough of nature.”
¯ Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

I was drawn to the alternating color bands in this scene. I kept thinking about how the impressionist painters looked at things and began putting my own spin on this image with that in mind.

The yellow boat and the body language of the fishermen also spoke to how the impressionists presented people in their paintings, often not identifiable but very present and going about their business in a completely recognizable way.
